AIBU to think that McDonalds need to up their vegan game

As a vegan the start of veganuary is always really exciting when all the new companies bring out their vegan stuff - this year seems to be particularly great - Greggs have brought the vegan steak bake, kfc have their vegan burger and McDonald’s....well they’ve taken the horrible goujon things they have in their veggie burger, sold them separately and marketed them as a new vegan meal! Grin AIBU to think that they need to seriously up their game?

Hiphopopotamus you won't get far mentioning being vegan on MN! They're very against in. A meal isn't a meal unless an animal has died for it. We have to stay at home making our own yoghurt from mung beans. Wanting an option in a multinational fast food joint? Get back in your hut lentil weaver! 🤣

spingly · 02/01/2020 20:07

If people can buy vegetarian/vegan food at McDonald’s, IMO that’s a good thing. I’m a vegan. Fewer meat burgers sold means fewer animals being eaten.

I don't think a significant amount of meat eating people would switch to a vegan burger. So I don't think this is true.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2020 20:07

Why does anyone go to McDonald’s cacti? It’s fast and it’s convenient.

SirChing · 02/01/2020 20:08

Why would a vegan want to eat in a burger place? Confused

Surely that's like someone lactose intolerant going to a.milkshake parlour.

HaggardMumofToddler · 02/01/2020 20:08

Gregg's vegan sausage roll is far too salty. But hooray for it!

I love them but they tend to undercook them sometimes so I make sure I always get a crispy one.

midnightmisssuki · 02/01/2020 20:09

Who goes to MacDonalds for vegan food?! 🤣 they are a fast food chain that specialise in not so healthy food. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BaolFan · 02/01/2020 20:09

But then I'm not a so-called 'militant vegan'. I believe that change comes about when you give people options that taste as good and are as easy as eating meat and dairy - and we're starting, slowly, to see that happen.

I like meat. I love cheese (and miss it greatly). But I don't regret going vegan and it's been really interesting experimenting with new foods - tofu for dinner tonight. However there are occasions where I want something quick and on the go and it's nice to be able to grab a sarnie, or a pizza! Pret's vegan Xmas dinner sarnie was very good and Pizza Hut's vegan pizza isn't bad. Gregg's now do a vegan doughnut, which is nice because previously I've only been able to get one whenever I've been down to London.

UndertheCedartree · 02/01/2020 20:09

McDonalds has sold vegan burgers for a long time. I think while vegans wouldn't necessarily choose to go there, there are of course people who eat a vegan diet but not follow the lifestyle, and I find since having children going to Mcdonalds can be part of socialising - as in parties or popping to Mcdonalds after swimming with friends and so it is reasonable for McDonald's to provide something they can eat. But in terms of investing much more in the vegan diet it probably isn't worth it.

GreaterSpottedFemale · 02/01/2020 20:09

So are ALL supermarkets. Do vegans go to those?

Yes, it's highly likely they do. And my statement remains the same. Stop propping up businesses that quite obviously go against your ethics if you really want to stand by what you believe in. If you are against mass farming, maltreatment of animals and the global impact it results in, don't give them your money!

ClappyFlappy · 02/01/2020 20:10

Times change plus people might have non vegan relatives/friends who want to go so I don’t think you are BU. They have veggie options so they could have vegan. Funny I was thinking that the other night when I was in Maccys chowing down a quarter pounder Blush

slipperywhensparticus · 02/01/2020 20:10

McDonald's is a burger joint and Greg's is all sausage rolls why would a vegan be there 🤷‍♀️

happycamper11 · 02/01/2020 20:10

You're right those goujons are terrible. The old veggie burgers used to be lovely too. I am not veggie or vegan but would often choose the veggie burger in the past.

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2020 20:10

I don't think a significant amount of meat eating people would switch to a vegan burger. So I don't think this is true.

People are though. Not necessarily for animal welfare reasons but lots for environmental reasons. There’s been a massive increase in the demand for plant based food.

BaolFan · 02/01/2020 20:10

Who goes to MacDonalds for vegan food?! 🤣 they are a fast food chain that specialise in not so healthy food

In my case, because it was the only place that was open and serving food within a 20 mile radius of the hotel where I was staying.

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 02/01/2020 20:11

I heard they are working on the McVegan....was on that documentary about McDonalds history and how they have to change with the market

AlternativePerspective · 02/01/2020 20:11

I find them all (McD’s/Burger King/Kentucky) repulsive and I’m a meat eater. Grin.

TBH I think the point that PP make about eating/shopping in establishments where your money will be used to buy dairy/meat products is a good illustration that if one is vegan for purely ethical purposes it is not actually sustainable to do so.

Doesn’t make being a vegan wrong, but veganism on the grounds of animal welfare isn’t actually possible.

GreaterSpottedFemale · 02/01/2020 20:11

there are of course people who eat a vegan diet but not follow the lifestyle,

Then they aren't vegan, they just eat a plant based diet. You can't call yourself a vegan unless you live the lifestyle that goes with it

BaolFan · 02/01/2020 20:11

McDonald's is a burger joint and Greg's is all sausage rolls why would a vegan be there

Because sometimes there isn't anywhere else to eat?

Hiphopopotamus · 02/01/2020 20:11

😂 @MsChnandlerBong so it seems!

Again @CactusAndCacti why is it more strange for a vegan to want to go to McDonald’s than shop in Asda or eat out at Zizzi or pizza express? All these places massively prop up the meat and dairy industries. And in answer to your question, McDonald’s is quick and convenient when travelling late at night or at services when nothing else is open and you’re desperate for a hot meal. Why does anyone eat there?

RollingOutOfBed · 02/01/2020 20:11

A lot of burger places have really good vegan/veggie options. I eat meat but I love vegetable based burgers and often order them. It isn't at all weird for them to offer veggie/vegan options, particularly as groups when dining may involve a mixture of people who eat meat and vegetarians/vegans. It makes sense to cater for such groups who may not want to go to a dedicated vegan restaurant.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/01/2020 20:12

Why would a (conscience) vegan want to buy food there?

www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/mcdonalds-burger-king-kfc-stop-the-amazon-fires/ This has definitely been ‘news’ since I was at school 1989s.

CactusAndCacti · 02/01/2020 20:12

Why does anyone go to McDonald’s cacti? It’s fast and it’s convenient.

People say that about Amazon. I still boycott it on moral grounds.

UndertheCedartree · 02/01/2020 20:12

And of course being vegan or even eating a vegan diet isn't (necessarily) about eating healthily. Vegans can still enjoy junk food!

Nicknacky · 02/01/2020 20:12

I had the chicken deluxe burger last night. I don’t particularly like burgers but it was amazing. I’m trying to stop myself going tonight for another one.

AllInTheBestPossibleTaste · 02/01/2020 20:12

People saying why would a vegan go into a McDonalds.....they may have friends who eat meat? I'm not a vegan but I go into restaurant that cater for vegans too
