AIBU to think that McDonalds need to up their vegan game

As a vegan the start of veganuary is always really exciting when all the new companies bring out their vegan stuff - this year seems to be particularly great - Greggs have brought the vegan steak bake, kfc have their vegan burger and McDonald’s....well they’ve taken the horrible goujon things they have in their veggie burger, sold them separately and marketed them as a new vegan meal! Grin AIBU to think that they need to seriously up their game?

Who goes to MacDonalds for vegan food?! 🤣 they are a fast food chain that specialise in not so healthy food

Who says vegan food is healthy food?

GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 02/01/2020 20:13

If you are vegan for environmental reasons then why do you want to eat "pretend meat" substitutes in a fast food chain aimed mainly for meat eaters?

Those manufacturers of mock meats have a higher environmental impact than you think, it's just not "hip" to mention it.

So if you are vegan for environmental reasons please don't eat any highly processed mock meats , vegan cheese and make your own nut milk.

happycamper11 · 02/01/2020 20:13

I love them but they tend to undercook them sometimes so I make sure I always get a crispy one.

Yes, why. They always look so pale and anaemic compared to all the others

LucaFritz · 02/01/2020 20:14

YABU why would any actual vegan or vegetarian for that matter support such an awful company that still serves animal products and is damaging the environment on a mass scale Hmm you have very skewered views about what been a vegan is op it ain't just trendy new food options for your insta likes

ClappyFlappy · 02/01/2020 20:14

I am now fighting the urge after the KFC chat to go and buy a bucket of their chicken.

Skyejuly · 02/01/2020 20:14

I think they should.

spingly · 02/01/2020 20:14

@PurpleDaisies fair comment, I stand corrected as that makes sense.

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 02/01/2020 20:15

Wow, there are some snippy people about Confused

I agree OP - from a capitalist perspective McD need to up their game! And I'll quite happily buy vegan fast food if it means they go "Ooh, look, there's demand" and make more of it. It was hilarious watching Tesco sprint down the vegan lane trying to gain back ground won by Sainsbos Grin

UndertheCedartree · 02/01/2020 20:15

@greater - I didn't say they were vegan - just that they eat a vegan diet which is the same thing as saying plant-based diet.

Skyejuly · 02/01/2020 20:15

I have to add not all vegans are in it for the animal welfare. It's a diet that makes you feel so much healthier.

Nicknacky · 02/01/2020 20:16

But do they need to up their game? Are their general sales falling?

Hiphopopotamus · 02/01/2020 20:16

Oh ffs I’m genuinely getting pissed off now - is no one allowed to make some positive changes for something without being told they’re not doing enough? I’m vegan but I’m not doing it well enough? @GetawayfromthatWelshtart the vast majority of my food is homecooked and vegetable and pulse based. But now I’m not doing enough because I sometimes eat fake meat products? It’s no wonder people think ‘why bother’?

It's a diet that makes you feel so much healthier.

That’s not necessarily true. Vegans can eat a load of unhealthy junk food and be deficient in vitamins and minerals just as easily as meat eaters.

Dawsoncreekk · 02/01/2020 20:17

I agree!

spingly · 02/01/2020 20:17

@happycamper11 on MN at the moment there is a thread about losing weight, on it a vegan tells how she is reversing a almost diabetic diagnosis and is losing weight. As she says on that not all vegans are underweight or malnourished. She has a good point.

FaFoutis · 02/01/2020 20:17

Do you all live in Glastonbury, Totnes or similar? There is not a choice of vegan venues on the typical high street. There are no shops that just sell vegan food, unless you want Tartex and lentils (at great cost).

I have spent 40 odd years not being able to find something I can eat. Being able to buy quick food (even if it's crap food) anywhere is a revolution.

feellikeanalien · 02/01/2020 20:17

I do wonder what actually goes into the vegan options in places like Kentucky and Greggs.
DP is convinced they are manufactured in laboratories and have very little to do with plantsSmile.

spingly · 02/01/2020 20:17

@PurpleDaisies snap! 😂

Luzina · 02/01/2020 20:18

Being vegan means you don't consume or wear or use animal products, doesn't it?

PurpleDaisies · 02/01/2020 20:20

spingly I put on a stone when I went vegetarian and just ate cheese instead of meat. The same happened when I went vegan and existed on meat substitutes and Oreos. My diet is (mostly!) great now I’ve discovered cooking again.

EssentialHummus · 02/01/2020 20:20

Because of their scale, McDonalds have to research/plan very carefully before introducing any new ingredients or recipes - their purchasing power is enormous. Introducing a vegan menu on a global scale (esp. with all the associated cross-contamination and handling issues) may be more trouble than its worth for them.

Shelby2010 · 02/01/2020 20:20

As a long time vegan I only go in McDonalds if I’m desperate for the toilet. I would never give them my money.

DBML · 02/01/2020 20:20

Veganuary 😂

Good God. I thought it was a one off, not sure if I can stand having this rammed down my throat annually.

RollingOutOfBed · 02/01/2020 20:22

No one is forcing you to take part, DBML.
