Have you ever had negative comments for dressing well going to work?

I suppose they were not negative in my case but I don't have much confidence really, so I think women (in both cases) wouldn't know that.

I dress well going to work. Pencil skirts or dresses. On two occasions how I dress has been commented on (and not complimentary).

First one was a girl who said 'you look like you're dressed up to go out - I wouldn't get dressed up to come into this place'. I felt like an eejit for trying too hard.

Second one were two female colleagues talking among themselves and one saying 'oh well, she's always overdressed'.

I like to dress well as it gives me confidence. But I feel women particularly hated me for it. The women I befriended never commented apart from maybe to say, that's a nice top - where did you get it (usually primark), but it has left me feeling self conscious about what I wear in case I look like a try-hard or something?

Please tell me some of you dress up to go to work?

Another factor might be an ex (who used to beat me up) told me I was dressing up for the men at work and in fact some of the beatings I took were to make my face bruised so that I couldn't go to work.

Got to page 2 and don't need to read any more to know I wish I was like you, I am just so disorganised. You have however given me the impetus to.go shopping for new work clothes for going back to work on Tuesday!

tiredtiredtired23 · 03/01/2020 11:56

Your just not worth it, soz!

astralweaks · 03/01/2020 11:59

Some people would say Dame Edna is “well dressed”.

Emeraldshamrock · 03/01/2020 11:59

@TARSCOUT Make sure you don't buy mustard tights. 😳

Perhaps your vanity and intense self-regard shine through your pencil skirts, OP? Or you come across as Having Notions.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 12:21

Well I see the bullies are out anyway. If that's what you need to do to make yourselves happy, crack on with it!

I used to clean in a pub, I’d only wear old jeans and trainers but put on an old but a nice-ish top and have some make up on and hair up. But I’d have things to do after so wouldn’t always be going straight home and didn’t want to walk through town etc scruffy. Plus there would be customers etc in the pub so plenty of people about to see me. I used to get comments off the other women that I looked glamorous or “done up” to clean etc. I used to laugh it off but it did annoy me. Why should I look scruffy just because I was cleaning.

Shedidnt · 03/01/2020 12:22

@FeigningHorror Thankfully my bubbly personality, charm, intelligence and sense of humour have got me further than the length of my skirts.

Lack of humility = cringe

I don’t think it’s your clothes that’s making your colleagues not warm to you. You’ve been very aggressive and defensive. Some of what you’ve said is bizarre. I’ve commented on people’s smart clothes and jokingly said I don’t dress like that but I’ve genuinely liked what they wear and meant it as a compliment. 🤷🏻‍♀️

leccybill · 03/01/2020 13:07

@Shedidnt
What exactly is your wild side, given that you've said you only wear work or gym clothes and you rarely go out?

lborgia · 03/01/2020 13:18

Good lord. I was first up being supportive, and concerned, but here we are after a bit of...badinage... and I'm afraid I have to do a complete 180.

OP is extraordinarily blind to her own issues failings , so cannot be helped. Always worth seeing a bit more of the inside before commenting.

DickDewy · 03/01/2020 13:34

I saw the photos earlier. You look fine OP. A bit old fashioned, but smart.

Where I work - the days of women commonly tottering around in heels and pencil skirts are thankfully, over.

This. Good grief you're hard work OP.

I've had some terrible experiences in the past and I'm so sorry for what you went through, it sounds horrific.

I recognise though that despite my past, when I'm being a bit of a dick I'm being a bit of a dick.

You've been so aggressive to people when your sense of humour seems cheeky and bantery. You've been just as snarky as the posters you think have been snarky to you.

I have a friend like this, she talks a good game to and about other people but if someone takes the mickey out of her she gets all defensive. Pick a lane!

Ps can't remember who but there was a poster who said something that sounded victim blaming and horrible so rest assured people noticed that too and thought it wasn't on.

It just doesn't change how bad your attitude is to everyone else!

astralweaks · 03/01/2020 13:57

I would like to see the photographs the OP posted. Which page are they on?
