I don't like Colin's. And as I've got older I've started to dislike Andre Lincoln's characters (which is sad as I used to love it so sort of taking the magic out of it) as he's actually a creepy stalker.

I adore Alan Rickman but didn’t like the storyline with him and the secretary. His poor wife Sad

sameasiteverwasantiques · 25/12/2019 12:01

Hugh Grant and Martine McCutcheon's for some reason.

Bezalelle · 25/12/2019 12:05

The one with Tim from The Office and the porno.

And Laura Linney.

Actually all of them except Emma Thompson's.

IndigoApple · 25/12/2019 12:07

Yeah Laura Linney and her brother. I fast forward those bits now!

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 25/12/2019 12:08

Andrew Lincoln is just a creepy bastard. He sulks all through his best mates wedding, making his new wife think that he hates her. But it’s alright because he then tells her that he loves her and that’s why he’s a bell end. So she snogs him and it’s all ok. Bunch of dicks.

ArranUpsideDown · 25/12/2019 12:08

I've never seen it but I have seen a sea change over the years in people's reaction to the stories - as PP, they started off loving the Lincoln and Firth but over time think they are creepy.

Everyone's heart always seems to have been fractured by the Rickman/Thompson storyline..

And some people over time don't like the power imbalance/childish behaviour involved in the Grant/McCutcheon (King Cophetua and Beggar Maid vibe).

I've decided that I'm not missing much.

MsMellivora · 25/12/2019 12:09

Andrew Lincoln is a grade A creep and an awful friend.

I adore Emma Thompson’s dignity in that film and the woman who sacrifices all for her unwell brother.

MissCharleyP · 25/12/2019 12:11

Also Laura Linney - I hate that they wrecked her chance to be happy.

Medievalist · 25/12/2019 12:12

Depends what you mean by don't like. I find the one about the woman with the brother in the psychiatric unit the saddest. I like Hugh Grant's story but Martine McCutcheon's acting is so hammy and cringe worthy I can barely watch. Favourite is the singer and his manager.

I agree the 2 porn actors is also my least favourite.

chomalungma · 25/12/2019 12:13

There is a really good analysis of Love Actually and the sexism in it. Can't link as am on phone.

fairybeagle · 25/12/2019 12:17

Just reread, didn't clarify and had typos. I meant the character Colin, who goes to America to get laid essentially. And obviously Andrew not Andre 🤷‍♀️

Yes the more I think about it the more not comfortable with a few others.

I hate the storylines where the women are in really cliched subordinate roles (the cleaning lady, the tea lady) the one where the woman is an evil husband-stealing vamp, and the Kiera Knightley/Andrew Lincoln story which is just eurgh. Can't decide if I like or hate the Laura Linney story line. The bits I rate are Emma Thompson and Rowan Atkinson. Oh, and Bill Nighy I loved.

fairybeagle · 25/12/2019 12:17

Always thought Laura Linney could have just spent the night with that guy and still supported her brother.

OP posts:
IfNot · 25/12/2019 12:18

All of it. It's all shit. The whole film is just story after story of men chasing *and getting) women who are FAR too young and hot for them. The only two "older" women (eg the women the same age as most of the men) end up sad and lonely.
And that kid wants a slap frankly.
Aagh, I've not even watched it this year and I'm raging!
In my remake Kiera Knightly kicks Andrew Wotsit in the balls and the entire Portuguese village throws Colin Firth in the sea for being a dirty old wierdo.

TheClausSeason · 25/12/2019 12:18

Hmm. I like the kid and his stepdad best, then:

  • Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman
  • The porno couple
  • Colin and American woman
  • Colin Firth and Aurelia
  • The Prime Minister and the sweary woman
  • The guy who fancies his friend's wife.
My least favourite is the woman who martyrs herself for her brother. I mean, he asks if she's busy and she says, in front of the poor guy she took home, that no she's not doing anything at all... I mean, fair enough if it were an actual emergency but there was no need to leave right that second.
BeanTownNancy · 25/12/2019 12:19

All of the men are a bit creepy except for Liam Neeson, who is trying so hard to be a good dad to his stepson. Sad Then the singer and his manager are actually a bit sweet. Porn guy is nice though but they are so awkward it makes me cringe. I still like the film as long as I don't think about it too much. Grin

chomalungma · 25/12/2019 12:19

That's the link. Jezebel. Interesting reading

southeastdweller · 25/12/2019 12:20

The Colin story was unfunny and perhaps the most unbelievable story of all of them. Kris Marshall is great but he was screwed over in this film.

ThursdayLastWeek · 25/12/2019 12:21

I always go to the loo/make a cup of tea when Mr Bean comes on.

I totally agree that it’s sexist claptrap...and yet...Bill Nighy saying Ant or Dec reels me back in every year!

Redcrayons · 25/12/2019 12:22

All of them. It’s a terrible film.

I will admit that Emma Thompson is good though.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 25/12/2019 12:25

I always disliked love actually, and never thought long enough about it to pin point why. That linked article is hilarious! Absolutely nails it. 😂
The less a woman talks the more loveable she is. Indeed.

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 12:25

I like Hugh Grant in Love Actually but his story with Martine McCutcheon is genuinely gross. Nobody talks like that, and she is clearly written by someone who has never met a working class person.

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 12:25

ThursdayLastWeek

😂

AreYouSiriusLupin · 25/12/2019 12:25

I have an irrational hatred of Colin firth so definitely not his story.

I love Bill Nighy and Emma Thompson/Alan Rickman so enjoy watching theirs the most.
