I don't like Colin's. And as I've got older I've started to dislike Andre Lincoln's characters (which is sad as I used to love it so sort of taking the magic out of it) as he's actually a creepy stalker.

I think it's more about a misguided understanding about family responsibility. I used to drop everything for my DB, because my DM kept on at me about looking out for him.

This brother in the film is in a psychiatric hospital. He doesn't need his sister to keep her life on hold for him.

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 16:39

I suppose the Laura linney story was just to hi light sacrifice.
They cut out a lesbian story with Francis de la tour which might have been better!

It’s different from yours, I’m not sure that makes it misguided.

f00k · 25/12/2019 16:56

The kid who fancies the American girl at school. I find the running through the airport scene so cringey.

f00k · 25/12/2019 16:59

I like Hugh Grant in Love Actually but his story with Martine McCutcheon is genuinely gross. Nobody talks like that, and she is clearly written by someone who has never met a working class person.

Agree. When she says, "Oh piss it." Who the fuck has ever said piss it?

ToEarlyForDecorations · 25/12/2019 17:01

All of it. It's all shit.

This^

I fail to understand why it's so popular and so enduring. It's even more shit than Dirty Dancing.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 25/12/2019 17:02

They are pretty much all awful aren't they? Stalker, philanderer, blundering idiot (HG), grateful for snt attention (MMc)...it's a problematic film. We haven't had it on our Christmas list for a while.

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 17:07

Dirty dancing is a strange one to me as well. Man grooms a young girl. The songs are not of the era and most of the characters are horrible. Why it's so popular is a mystery.
Don't get me stared on Grease.
When I pointed out to someone that it's about women changing for their man and a bad message for girls generally they were a bit surprised as it hadn't occurred to them at all! ( I know he tries to change too at the end , but you know that he wouldn't keep that up for long!)

lljkk · 25/12/2019 17:07

come on gals... It's a fable. As fables go it's pretty good.

We've just reached the scene where half the village followed Colin Firth into the romantic restaurant...

MikeUniformMike · 25/12/2019 17:09

Not seen it.

GonnaBeMaayy · 25/12/2019 17:11

The music in Love Actually is lovely though

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 17:15

' he wants to murder Auriola' ( or whatever the beautiful portugese girl is called!)
Of course everyone is pretty and beautiful in most Curtis films. Well , the women are anyway ..
and it always snows. When did it last snow in London at Christmas? It's not a film for the Brits really! Lol

BumbleBeee69 · 25/12/2019 17:18

Yeah Laura Linney and her brother

Yip.. her character drove me insane....

but there again, I loathed Four Weddings and a Funeral.... hated the character Hugh fell in love with.. Xmas Hmm

OlaEliza · 25/12/2019 17:22

Keira knightly's. I just don't like her. She ruins everything she's in.

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 17:27

Four weddings has some good bits and the funeral bit was filmed close to where I used to live. I agree that the Andie mcdowell character isn't nice though and too much swearing! I like it more than L A but it is a 90s film and not aged well either.
I do love Muriel's wedding ! That really is a good film and very under rated. I could watch that every day and never get bored. ' your terrible Muriel' !

EllenRipley · 25/12/2019 17:29

@FrauleinF
Best piece of cinematic deconstruction EVER.

There are only shit storylines in Love Actually because it is possibly THE WORST film EVER made.

GoGoLego · 25/12/2019 17:38

Laura Linney I have to fast forward that bedroom bit after the Christmas party

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/12/2019 17:38

No, it wasn't the 'best piece of cinematic deconstruction ever'. The author of it is a bit of an arsehole. "ginger weener"? There's no need for it and what a twat she is.

Mumberjack · 25/12/2019 17:42

It’s all shite!! The Alan Rickman/Emma Thomson storyline is the least irritating but it’s not a happy ending either.
Don’t get me started on creepy doorstep card guy or the idiot from My Family.

GonnaBeMaayy · 25/12/2019 17:47

Who’s ginger in Love Actually?
Love how ginger is just used as part insult for anyone who’s face doesn’t fit

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/12/2019 17:52

She meant 'Colin', the guy from the BT adverts. If he'd have had blond or brown hair she wouldn't have said it. She could have mentioned his height if she needed a 'funny'. I thought the piece was mildly amusing... until I got to that. Not ok at all.

I've never lauded ginger/red hair or any hair colour, it's just hair, but when somebody uses it to bully or make fun of somebody then I'm saying so.

Deadringer · 25/12/2019 17:56

fuck that snape Grin
Like a pp I can't stand Andrew Lincoln in any role except Rick Grimes, the walking dead just isn't the same without him. I am not keen on Thompson but love her in this, and Bill Nighy is fabulous as always.

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 17:57

At the end Emma Thompson looks like she might forgive her husband and take him back , but he'll have to work very hard at regaining the trust! That's how I saw it as she was there at the airport.
It was the only bit of the film I felt invested in really as it was very well acted.

Deadringer · 25/12/2019 18:10

I have never understood why the Keira knightly character runs out and kisses the Andrew Lincoln character. Surely it would give him some kind of hope? I think it's a bit harsh calling him a stalker, he does everything he can to avoid her, throws himself into planning his mate's wedding even though his heart is breaking, and finally tells her his feelings (to explain his behavior around her) but lets her know he expects nothing from her and is determined to move on with his life.

Softskin88 · 25/12/2019 18:17

I didn’t like the fact that the only same-sex love story that was shot for Love Actually was left out of the final cut. It featured the Headmistress of the school and her partner, who had cancer.

I know 2003 was a long time ago, but surely it wasn’t controversial then?
