I don't like Colin's. And as I've got older I've started to dislike Andre Lincoln's characters (which is sad as I used to love it so sort of taking the magic out of it) as he's actually a creepy stalker.

Emma Thompson is obviously sublime, as always in everything she does. I hate Andrew Lincoln in everything except the walking dead. I weirdly love his fake American accent.

AFireInJuly · 25/12/2019 12:29

I rewatched it for the first time in about 15 years and it was not as I remembered it! All the storylines irritate me, except the Liam Neeson one. The Andrew Lincoln/Keira Knightley one is quite frankly a matter for the police, and as for Colin Firth proposing to a young woman he can’t speak to one month after his wife dumps him - that’s going to end well!

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 12:29

It’s hard to believe that creep holding those signs is Rick Grimes, isn’t it?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 25/12/2019 12:29

Bill Nighy's relationship is the only one worth applauding.

Hugh Grant plays the exact same character in everything he's ever been in. His dancing is enough to make me clench til I break a tooth.
Alan Rickman ruined the enormous crush I'd had on him since the In Demand video when he fucked about with that secretary and let Emma Thompson's heart break. Fuck that, Snape.
Colin Firth was wet and it was a shame she said yes; I'd have liked to see one or both of them bitten by eels in that lake.
Colin Frissle was dull and cliched.
Keira Knightley and Andrew Lincoln were just odd; their story didn't work. I did like her fluffy jumper in the street scene, though.
Liam Neeson lost me when he forced the poor child to watch Titanic - hadn't he already suffered enough losing his Mother?
The porn thing was boring and I didn't want Watson to end up with Stacey at all. You could guarantee they'd be the most boring couple you've ever met, finishing one anothers sentences and rubbing noses in an effort to be cute.

Load of old shite. Muppets Christmas Carol is so much better and the relationships are far more functional.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 25/12/2019 12:33

I hate the Laura Linney story with a passion. Why does she need to martyr herself for her brother? Surely it's perfectly possible to have a relationship AND support your family member? Confused

The writing for and about Martine McCutcheon was dreadful (that woman who comments on her weight...)

But there are tiny moments I love: Hugh Grant's dance, "eight is a lot of legs, David", the brilliance of Emma Thompson's acting, the actor who plays Liam Neeson's son, all of Bill Nighy's bits....

SilverySurfer · 25/12/2019 12:34

Although I disapprove of people cheating, I can't stand Emma Thompson so forgive Alan Rickman - well I would forgive him for anything.. I love the Bill Nighy/Manager bits, some awful acting from Martine McCutcheon and agree that the woman with a brother was a drip.

beautifulstranger101 · 25/12/2019 12:35

Laura Linney- I admire her love for her brother but FFS, she doesnt need to be at his beck and call ALL THE DAMN TIME- he's in a psych ward, not alone. Its perfectly possible have a life of your own AND care about your family- they aren't mutually exclusive.
As an aside- the portrayal of the psych hospital was the most realistic Ive seen in a film so far (eg they're usually portrayed as some 1940s asylum with tiny padded cells and its not like that at all).

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 25/12/2019 12:36

All of them. It’s a supberbly shite film.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/12/2019 12:39

I have always hated that film. Emma Thompson opening the CD is the only redeeming feature in the whole thing.

BikeRunSki · 25/12/2019 12:40

I don’t dislike any of them, but think that the Emma Thompson/Alan Rickman is, sadly, the only realistic one. I love Colin Firth’s story... because I am a big softy... , also Liam Neeson’s step son... madly unrealistic. But it annoys me that they couldn’t have given Laura Linney a happy ending.

There are more stories in the DVD extras, including an older lesbian couple - think one is the headmistress of the school that hosts the nativity - which is endearing.

fairybeagle · 25/12/2019 12:42

For some reason I can't tag you Frau but that article just made me laugh so much I nearly woke my toddler. Brilliantly written synopsis of the movie

The Liam Neeson storyline irritates thr hell out of me as his wife has been dead like two weeks!!!!!! She isn't even cold for gods sake and he's after the Claudia Schiffer lookalike!

SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 25/12/2019 12:45

I know this wasn't the point of the thread but I'm pretty sure the actors playing John and Judy weren't filming porn? I think they're supposed to be body doubles/stand ins 😂

My least favourite is probably Laura Linney and her brother because I just find it so bloody sad!

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 12:46

Yes, it’s not porn. They’re doubles for a love scene in a standard film.

Littlepond · 25/12/2019 12:46

The whole film is dreadful. I hate it all.

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 12:47

Although it’s a pretty frisky one.

I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago
They all annoyed the hell out of me

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 25/12/2019 12:50

The only stories I like are Hugh Grant kicking Billy Bob Thornton's arse in politics (not the Martine McCutcheon bit) and Bill Nighy's bit. That's it. None of the others, including Emma Thompson.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 25/12/2019 12:52

I think it's an awful film. Even supposedly dignified Emma Thompson. There's dignity and then there's being a total doormat who sacrifices all for everyone else. She should have held it together in front of the kids then told him to enjoy his last Christmas as a family as the was off on a "business trip" the next day and wouldn't be coming back. People who cheat don't recognise dignity and "see the light" they just think you're a sap and pat themselves on the back for getting away with it.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 25/12/2019 12:53

The Martine McCutcheon character for me is the most unbelievable, the porn characters are the most cringeworthy, Colin, the most ridiculous, Laura Linney the most frustrating and Emma Thompson's the most heartbreaking, I always cry when she is upstairs after opening her Christmas present. I know the film's not exactly a masterpiece, but I still love it for Bill Nighy, Alan Rickmansworth, Emma Thompson and the fact it's true what they say about Love. Anyone watching people at Arrivals at an airport, particularly around Christmas sees this and it's true about all those people on 9/11 texting/phoning loved ones to tell them they love them. All you need is Love (and cake obvs). Peace Man.

redexpat · 25/12/2019 12:55

Bill Nighy is great: Thank you Ant or Dec.

Dislike Sarah.

Rowan Atkinson is great in his minor role.

Love the kid on the drums.

LINABE · 25/12/2019 12:57

It was Claudia Schiffer - not a 'lookalike'.

RickSanchez · 25/12/2019 13:02

Can I just point out a fact about Love Actually that absolutely melted my brain when I read it? Keira Knightly (Juliet) was only 5 years older than the little lad (Sam) when the film was made Shock

To ask who's story you don't like in Love Actually?
WatchingTheMoon · 25/12/2019 13:02

I don't understand the Colin storyline, it doesn't really gel with the others. Why is his mate so against him going to the states? Why is it such a big deal to go there? Just a weird, forced storyline compared to the others.

Not a fan of the Bill Nighy parts either.
