I don't like Colin's. And as I've got older I've started to dislike Andre Lincoln's characters (which is sad as I used to love it so sort of taking the magic out of it) as he's actually a creepy stalker.

Mine is that fucking Karen. Just winds me up rotten!

ImFineThankYouSusan · 25/12/2019 15:08

God dammit.

Reading all these comments is making me want to hate watch it again. Have so far successfully avoided it this year...

Secret Barrister did a live tweet of it that is worth a look.

Can I ask.
If someone was in a psychiatric unit, would they be allowed to call their sister at all hours and her be allowed to visit?

ImFineThankYouSusan · 25/12/2019 15:25

ArranUpsideDown

Cheers for that! Great twitter thread.

Still probably gonna hate watch it though

lljkk · 25/12/2019 15:40

DD insisted we put this on, and this is first time I've ever seen any of it!
Liam Nielhson brightens any flick.

I like the Emma Thompson line about not wanting to shag a cry baby (I am a fan of tough love).
I'm enjoying the ageing rock star a lot.
Not sure about the rest.

Lizzie0869 · 25/12/2019 15:41

@Ihatesundays I very much doubt that it would be possible. And I suspect the advice to the sister would be that she isn't her DB's therapist and she should let the professionals do their job.

I have no personal experience of psychiatric hospitals, but I've had enough experience of mental illness to know that professional help is necessary.

I can't really imagine that a psychiatric hospital would allow a patient unlimited access to a mobile phone, though.

malylis · 25/12/2019 15:42

awesome thread there.

I confess I still like the movie though.

Dontrainonmyparade · 25/12/2019 15:42

Never watched it. Worth me watching now?

Mominatrix · 25/12/2019 15:43

All of them. It is a crap movie which has not aged well.

Lizzie0869 · 25/12/2019 15:58

@lljkk I agree that tough love is appropriate sometimes. My point, though, was that a man grieving for his dead wife wouldn't in real life even be thinking about wanting to shag another woman at that moment, as all he wants is for his wife not to have died. So it was just a very silly comment to make.

beautifulstranger101 · 25/12/2019 15:58

Depends. If they are on an informal (voluntary section) and using their own mobile phone then yes, they could do it from their own room. If they dont have a phone then no- they'd have to use the phone in the nursing station or the patient phone which is usually near the nursing station and they'd be discouraged from doing that at all hours

beautifulstranger101 · 25/12/2019 15:59

Also, she wouldn't just be able to visit any time she wanted. They have visiting hours like any other hospital

Toooldtobearsed2 · 25/12/2019 16:05

Meh, its my Christmas staple.
Christmas eve, chocolates, wine and LA.

Most films are shite when you drill down, I just enjoy it for what it is.

In an acute ward that wouldn't be possible but this man lives there. He's probably in a low security residential ward and would be allowed most of the freedoms that someone would have in say an old folk's home. The staff would monitor him and manage his medication but otherwise they'd give him as much autonomy as he could cope with.

But of course it's ridiculous that his sister would sacrifice everything for him. The nurses would be on hand 24/7 if there was a mental health crisis. She just needs to be a normal loving sister, much like if a parent was in a home suffering from mild dementia.

I like that sibling love is included in the film but i don't like how it's done

Lizzie0869 · 25/12/2019 16:11

@Toooldtobearsed2 I quite agree. In my younger days, it was Sound of Music, White Christmas and My Fair Lady. Now it's Love Actually and Frozen.

But now, I just can't be bothered anymore. Grin

I agree. It's about having good boundaries. That's a lesson that it took me a long time to learn. And I only learned it when I had DC, who took priority.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/12/2019 16:19

Hate Keira knightly in anything but I loved her wedding outfit

lljkk · 25/12/2019 16:20

I've seen friendships & even loving romances that are based on harsh comments. It's a rock solid foundation in some relationships. They'd say they have perfect honesty.

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 16:23

The Laura Linney comments are a bit Confused. Obviously she doesn’t have to spend all her time with her brother. She does it out of love.

beautifulstranger101 · 25/12/2019 16:31

So, loving your brother means you can never, ever have a romantic relationship with anyone?
Nah.
Dont agree with that at all. Plus, she wasn't just "spending time with him" she would drop everything- even things that were important to her in the moment to be at his beck and call.

It was obvious from the film that she wasn't happy doing it, it felt like a duty to her.

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 16:32

beautifulstranger101

No. Just that we’re all different. This is what this character can live with. 🤷🏻‍♀️

southeastdweller · 25/12/2019 16:33

I always thought the Laura Linney character was lacking confidence and 'used' her brother's illness as an excuse not to engage in some areas of her life.

churchandstate · 25/12/2019 16:34

Oh, she’s a bit of a wet blanket, like. But each to their own. She wants to be there for her brother.

This was the exact impression I got too. She really wanted to have a relationship but was also really scared of rejection, so the brother became a reason not to take the risk
