I don't like Colin's. And as I've got older I've started to dislike Andre Lincoln's characters (which is sad as I used to love it so sort of taking the magic out of it) as he's actually a creepy stalker.

I’m definitely the only person who liked the Keira Knightley/whatshisname storyline.

fairybeagle · 25/12/2019 13:10

@ikeakia I think so 😆

Glad I'm not the only one that found the Laura Linney one so frustrating. As PP's have said, it doesn't have to be an either or!!

I could watch the bit when Hugh Grant got all presidential and gave Billy Bob what for again, but the rest of it not so much.

exWifebeginsAgainat46 · 25/12/2019 13:15

they’re all hateful. the bit where the tiny boy dodges security at the airport gives me the actual rage. and the alan rickman fancy woman when she opens her legs at her desk. ugh ugh ugh. and martine mccutcheon saying ‘piss it’ is hideous.

i don’t like Love Actually very much. props as always though for Keira Knightly acting entirely through her chin.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 25/12/2019 13:15

The kid 'love story' and running through the airport Hmm gross

sippingcoffee · 25/12/2019 13:32

All of them , hate the film

Sewrainbow · 25/12/2019 13:36

Dont like any of them, frombthe cliched mention of the twin towers through allbtgat storylines. Never liked it or saw the appeal. The two women who deserved happiness and made many sacrifices never got it Sad

WatchingTheMoon · 25/12/2019 13:38

@ikeakia What's your fav part of the Keira Knightley part? Is it when she simpers "I look quite pretty actually!" as if she's some kind of hideous boot that couldn't possibly have looked pretty on her wedding day?

AmIthechristmasfairy · 25/12/2019 13:40

I liked the Colin Firth story

Agree that Laura Linney could have a relationship as well as care for her brother

Hate the bits with Martine McCutcheon. I think the scriptwriters don't usually swear. I mean, does anyone say piss it? And would anyone really say "where the fuck is my fucking coat" in front of your whole family, including kids

ikeakia · 25/12/2019 13:53

That’s not a totally ridiculous thing for her to have said though, many people imagine flaws and can’t see themselves as they really are. Have you never seen a picture of yourself and thought ‘oh that’s actually a nice one!’ Even if all the others are nice too to everyone else.

But that’s unrelated.

Personally I like it because unrequited love is really shit, I feel sorry for him because he loved someone who married his best friend. I think the bit at the front door answered her questions ( like is he going to make a move on me? Will it be more awkward now?) after she realised he felt that way when watching the wedding film. It gave him closure and gave them both a platform to move on to a different level of understanding with each other. Thus making it easier to spend time around each other with her husband/his friend.

Yes, the edited wedding film wasn’t a great choice though! Came across creepier than intended!

TheKitchenWitch · 25/12/2019 14:13

I love all of them, every single one. It is one of my favourite films ever and it makes me laugh and cry and feel all warm inside every year when I watch it.

Fishcakey · 25/12/2019 14:17

@linabe yes but in the film it's a lookalike, I know she played the part

GonnaBeMaayy · 25/12/2019 14:23

I can’t really bear Love Actually any more. I used to love it but I just find it insipid sexist rubbish.

WellErrr · 25/12/2019 14:24

All of it. It’s a horribly sexist film.

Youseethethingis · 25/12/2019 14:25

It’s not aged at all well, Actually.
I like the bit where Hugh Grant is dancing in Downing Street. I like the central idea that love is in many types of relationships and does make the world go round. Apart from that, it’s a lot of shit. Xmas Grin

Lizzie0869 · 25/12/2019 14:31

*Andrew Lincoln is a grade A creep and an awful friend.

I adore Emma Thompson’s dignity in that film and the woman who sacrifices all for her unwell brother.*

That's true, but that story always makes me very sad. I have a DB who has serious MH issues and my DM piles on the guilt by constantly telling me how lonely his life is. I know he is, but I also know that I can't fix him. (I have my own MH issues, my siblings and I have both been damaged by our childhood abuse.)

The thing that has changed that is having a family of my own, with a DH and 2 adopted DDs. I've learned that I don't have to feel guilty that I've made a life for myself, like my DSis has done.

Some things can't be fixed by family. The woman's brother is actually in a psychiatric hospital where he has professionals taking care of him.

This is where we all need to set our own boundaries.

As for the film itself, I agree that the Lincoln character is creepy and that storyline makes me very uncomfortable.

I love the Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman storyline, it's the best story in the film, but one of her lines really grates on me. It's not long after Liam Neeson has buried his wife and he's grieving. Emma Thompson tells him that 'no one wants to shag a cry baby.' As if a grieving widower would be even thinking about shagging another woman at that moment in time. Hmm

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 14:39

Laura linney and the porn stand in ones!
The others are ok , although the film hasn't aged that well. Feel sorry for Emma Thompson when she discovers how horrible her husband is. Who has a nativity on Christmas Eve though? Most schools are closed by then! Locked up for a long holiday.
..

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 14:41

Love Bill Nighy!
' ant or dec' .. they were so young and fresh faced back then!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/12/2019 14:45

@ThursdayLastWeek. "Ant or Dec" is the best bit of the film!!

It's only worth watching for Billy Mack anyway. "Don't buy drugs, kids. Become a pop star and they give them to you for free..." 😂😂😂

DeeZastris · 25/12/2019 14:46

Why was there so many references to Martine McCutcheon’s weight? Confused she looked amazing.

The80sweregreat · 25/12/2019 14:53

I think Martine had a lot of grief when she was in Eastenders over her weight. Totally wrong as she was never overweight at all.!
I think this was a reference to it in the film.
I do love it when Hugh Grant offers the services of the SAS for her ex boyfriend ' just one call , lovely people , very obliging '
There are a few funny lines to be fair. Bill nighy has most of them!

I agree. She's so pretty. But there were so many references to her "huge bottom" by other people - she was a size 12/14 in that film I reckon- thats hardly "huge" ffs.
