DS is 2 weeks old. I'm BF and hungry constantly. I also had gestational diabetes for the last 10 weeks if pregnancy so very limited carbs.

Last night I wanted fish and chips. DH has unfortunately inherited a bit of competitive under eating from his mother (oh that's me done for the day if there's a big lunch- this is never actually true!) So I was very specific with my order, and being hungry.
He arrives home with a fish each, but one single chips (not even a large one) to go between me, him and DD. He also missed out the curry sauce Xmas Angry
I served up for myself and DD leaving almost no chips for him, then told him it wad his own bloody fault and he needed to go back to the shop if he wanted chips. He's been sulking since last night. WIBU? He knows how much I hate the meager little portions when we go to his parents, it shouldn't be too much to ask for a reasonable portion if chips, esp while breastfeeding!

OP posts:
ohfourfoxache · 21/12/2019 14:58

I think I would have eaten all the chips, sharing with dd of course.

Then I probably would have eaten him too

CheshireChat · 21/12/2019 14:59

On what planet is a small sandwich 400-500 calories?!

And ultimately the OP's husband doesn't get to dictate how much she should eat.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 21/12/2019 15:00

While he might have behaved like an arse, it seems your hunger and your actual needs are also not well lined up. Having pregnancy diabetes sets you up for becoming diabetic long term, so you might as well address that now.

When I was breastfeeding I ate like a cow, I was constantly hungry. I BF for just over a year and still I lost a ton of weight and went down to a size 8 to the point that my work colleallgues thought I must be stressed. Ha ha! I was eating non stop.

I could easily put away a whole large cod and chips and a saveloy with no probs.

I always was one of those people who eats loads without it showing anywhere (not so much now as hypothyroid, unfortunately) so there's more to putting on weight than simply how much calories you eat. It's just not that simple.

OP, YANBU but people often don't understand how hungry you can get when breastfeeding, even in hospital they give out meagre portions on the ward. Let him sulk!

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 21/12/2019 15:01

*colleagues! I have no idea what that mess is!

LurkingFather · 21/12/2019 15:02

A slice of toast is 100 calories, two slices and whatever you shove in the middle makes 400.

And, no, it isn't his job to control what she eats. That way lies misery in many different ways. It is still right to reflect on what is actually needed.

Wonderland18 · 21/12/2019 15:03

@lurkingfather I had GD and was 9stone, BMI perfect.
Also BF a constantly hungry newborns exhausting and starving work, I sent my partner out for 3 McDonalds meals for me often at the start and ate every bloody bite.
Currently just under 8 stone so the extra meals done no harm. I know of a few women in the same boat as me.

Op eat without judgement, you are much better fit to care for a baby when your not hungry and stressed!

FruitcakeOfHate · 21/12/2019 15:07

YANBU. But oh, food threads on MN! They are hilarious!

I had a boyfriend who tried to control my eating. At the time I was very athletic and young, could really put it away. He didn't last long.

NameChangedNoImagination · 21/12/2019 15:08

I'd have sent him back to the shop.

CheshireChat · 21/12/2019 15:08

LurkingFather not his right, not "not his job" actually.

And she doesn't have to think about it if she doesn't want to- she doesn't want to lose weight and fish and chips are a treat anyway.

And a slice of bread is around 80 calories IIRC, google is telling me around 65 which sounds a bit low TBF.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 21/12/2019 15:12

I never really understood what 'mansplaining' was until this thread. Now there's a man explaining all about a process he'll never experience and a poster who was obese heckling from the sidelines.

Perhaps we just need a catch-all term, "Twatsplaining"? Confused

Witsendagain · 21/12/2019 15:17

My sister did similar recently dad was cooking something I'm allergic to to go with chips, so I said don't worry I'll just have some mushy peas with mine. She came back with one smallish bag of chips for 7 people knowing that I'd wanted a big meal because I would be travelling from 1am until the following evening so couldn't guarantee eating properly! I was beyond fuming!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/12/2019 15:17

How much she eats is her choice not her husband’s.
How about she goes to fill his car with petrol and only puts half the requested amount because walking is good for him. Or when it’s her round buy him half a pint not the full one he asked for because too much alcohol is bad and calorific.

gamerchick · 21/12/2019 15:17

Twatsplaining

Heh I've deleted worse words and decided not to respond at all because I'll get banned. Grin

I never really understood what 'mansplaining' was until this thread. Now there's a man explaining all about a process he'll never experience

Worth quoting.

justcly · 21/12/2019 15:21

Twatsplaining it is.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 21/12/2019 15:27

we have French and Italian friends who eat really well but would not dream of eating our portion sizes.

That's actually nonsense. Italians eat loads. I find it quite difficult visiting our Italian friends because of the constant feeding, and I do not have a small appetite by any manner of means.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 21/12/2019 15:28

Depends on the chippy !

One of ours a small would do greedy dp and I but the other we'd order a large, chips each.........ordering one small between 3 people including a breastfeeding mum is sheer foolery.

Skidzer · 21/12/2019 15:29

I'd feel stuffed after a full piece of fish. The carbs are in the batter.

FoamingAtTheUterus · 21/12/2019 15:30

Lonny my favourite neighbors were an Italian family and their huge, vats of food they'd regularly pass over the wall. Grin

Skidzer · 21/12/2019 15:30

Lonny, Italians eat 3 meals a day regimentally. And they are very small portions compared to ours.

MsChnandlerBong · 21/12/2019 15:32

Twatsplaining is excellent.

He's still here banging on about calories is he. Nobody cares mate.

BreatheAndFocus · 21/12/2019 15:33

*This will probably pies you off, but a portion of chippy chips has between 800 and 1k calories.

Add the fish and the batter. You are looking easily at a day and half of nutrition or more in a single chippy portion. Without breakfast or else.

While he might have behaved like an arse, it seems your hunger and your actual needs are also not well lined up. Having pregnancy diabetes sets you up for becoming diabetic long term, so you might as well address that now.*

Wow - you’re rude, aren’t you? Are you one of those men who don’t like to see women eat?

BTW, you’re talking cr*p. Breastfeeding needs more like 700 extra calories a day, and often more in the early days/weeks while breastfeeding is getting established.

And no midwife would recommend starving yourself when you’re breastfeeding just because you had had GD. Having GD simply puts you at a slightly higher risk of Type 2 diabetes in the future and usually just means annual HbA1C tests for a while.

I agree with the PPs who’ve pointed out ‘mansplaining’. It’s infuriating.

MsChnandlerBong · 21/12/2019 15:34

I'm stuffed after half a pickled onion. Probably wouldn't eat for the next 2 days I'd be so full. I'm such a delictlate laydee with a teeny weeny appetite, like all proper laydees have.

FruitcakeOfHate · 21/12/2019 15:35

I'd feel stuffed after a full piece of fish. The carbs are in the batter.

That's nice, dear.

FruitcakeOfHate · 21/12/2019 15:37

You are such a pig, MsChandler! Bet you weigh 20st. I just walk by the chippy and the carbs in the fumes make me bloat up a full stone.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 21/12/2019 15:39

Small portions of chips are enough for anyone. Are you fat by any chance and DH thin?

You do understand what the word AnyONE means, don’t you? The implication of the ONE’ part is pretty clear. The OP’s husband bought a single portion for THREE. Did you ignore that bit? Maybe one should read the whole thread; otherwise one may end up looking like a complete twazzock.

And your ‘embarrassment’ at eating more than French and Italian friends is hysterical. Imagine the scenario. ‘Where’s Joy? Not seen her for ages?’ ‘Didn’t you hear? She’s entered a convent. She ate more than Pascal and Maria at dinner and they SAW’. ‘Oh my God, no! No wonder she’s become a religious hermit’.
