My daughter (9) just told me as we were leaving for school earlier she had an xmas party and was allowed to bring in party clothes. I said to go grab some clothes quickly and stick in the bag. She grabbed an old football shirt and some jeans. I said what about all the really nice dresses and shoes? She said she is boyish and likes this. I was like ok but feel a bit embarrassed. It was the same when we went to a xmas party at the club last week. She wore an old jumper and not any of the nice new xmas jumpers or trendy clothes- jumpsuits I have bought. My partner thinks I am bu and should just let her wear what she wants. AIBU?

YABU. You can't force her to be something she's not.

You mentioned "old" a few times. If you're embarrassed because the clothes are tatty or have holes in then fair enough, but let her have new versions of the clothes she wants to wear, not new versions of what you think she should wear. At 9 she's old enough to choose.

There’s no such thing as boys and girls clothes

people repeating that on an anonymous forum won't make it any less true.

@formerbabe I live in New Zealand, we are more relaxed in this part of the world I believe. Obviously there will be one or two less relaxed types, but some of the comments I've read on this post are something I can't really imagine being said here.

YABU. When was it decided that a football shirt or a jumper is boys clothes? What am I even reading? Seriously??

SexlessBoulderBelly · 21/12/2019 19:14

So you’re definition of ‘boys clothes’ is jeans and a football top?

Better go throw all my bastard jeans away before anyway think I’m too much of a lad 🤦🏼‍♀️

I wouldn’t presume to choose the clothes of a 9 year old.

Jeans and football shirts are not “boys clothes”. I hope you don’t enforce other gender stereotypes around her.
