Not to brag. Essential services are working.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working.
We get it you have 2 weeks off. Please have some respect.

I don’t think anyone gets two weeks off these days except education sector.

I’ve got three weeks off but I’ve used a ton of annual leave/weekends/bank holidays to do it

fligglepige · 19/12/2019 23:35

So you want everyone who has 2 weeks off to pretend they don't have 2 weeks off?

Sparklesocks · 19/12/2019 23:36

I think most people understand that and are generally respectful. Has someone in your life said something to prompt this post?

DerbyshireGirly · 19/12/2019 23:36

So nobody can voice enjoyment about anything in case they offend somebody?

StillMedusa · 19/12/2019 23:37

I have respect..sure.. but I also deal with severely autistic, incredibly challenging and at times dangerous young people. By the end of term I am physically exhausted/bruised/bitten etc and mentally flat lining.

So YAY I have two weeks off. You chose your job, I chose mine.. you work xmas but you don't have to take your holidays at peak times... swings and roundabouts I'd say...

Belledan1 · 19/12/2019 23:42

I break up 24th and back on 2nd. Work public sector.Could have extended it if had enough hols. I know I am very lucky as my DH only gets xmas day. People i work with still moan they have to go in Monday and tues unless booked it off. I would never brag I am grateful as have worked in places where had to go in.

Foxes157 · 19/12/2019 23:43

Still Medusa who looks after those children outside the 9 to 5 at weekends. Not just The parents.

OP posts:
bridgetreilly · 19/12/2019 23:43

Huh?

StillMedusa · 19/12/2019 23:46

HA!!! Sadly, yes, mostly just the parents as council budgets have disappeared and respite care is non existent (and even those with budgets can't recruit carers).
I'm also a parent to a young adult with autism so yes I do know. Not sure what your problem is... I was merely pointing out that we choose where to work and the conditions that accompany it.

Vehivle · 19/12/2019 23:47

Geeze louise. I work in essential services. I'm "off for christmas" because I didnt use any annual leave the entire year bar one day so I could ensure being off to enjoy it with my young children. Also because when doing the rota on covering over christmas - thankfully there are lots of people without children/with grown up children who are happy to volunteer as cover so those with young children can have the time away. And I still dont gripe people who are off for christmas because their job allows it. "Have some respect" my ass. Stop being such a debbie downer for everyone else.

R1R2 · 19/12/2019 23:49

NO FUN ALLOWED

Foxes157 · 19/12/2019 23:50

I assume you are there at 7 am in the morning or there in the evening supporting families

And I'm leaving my Asd daughter on Christmas day to support families to care for their loved Ones

Isithometimeyet0987 · 19/12/2019 23:50

I’m off 23rd December to 5th January, I don’t go around saying yay look how much time if have off, aww poor you in work but I’m not going to pretend I’m not off work either, it’s a normal thing to say in a conversation that your off work same way you would say if you had two weeks off at summer whys Christmas any different?

Shinyletsbebadguys · 19/12/2019 23:51

I work in an industry that is 24/7/365 in a very intense way and as it happens this is the first year in 22 years I work in the only tiny part of it that gets Christmas off....but I can absolutely tell you noone I know (and frankly my whole friendship group is still in active industry and is working christmas) begrudge those who have it off.

You really aren't talking for everyone else. It's taken as a known thing if you get lucky in my industry and get Christmas off (unheard of to have 2 weeks off unless you are in my tiny little bit that I worked very hard to get into) your colleagues are genuinely just pleased for you. This sort of statement would have been thoroughly laughed at.

I'm sorry you haven't got it off, I've been there for decades but I never begrudged anyone else for it or took passive aggressive shots.

catandadogandababy · 19/12/2019 23:53

I can't wait to do my big shop at Sainsbury's on Boxing Day

Shinyletsbebadguys · 19/12/2019 23:53

Your last update tells me you are in a branch of my industry. You have to know you're statement would be considered completely unacceptable?

Justmuddlingalong · 19/12/2019 23:56

OMG!

GlummyMcGlummerson · 19/12/2019 23:57

Look OP being a carer to a dependent and juggling work life is shit, but just because some people have it shit it doesn't mean others can't enjoy their lives. Bitterness is not an appealing way of life

VaguelySensible · 19/12/2019 23:58

I'm delighted to have two weeks off, and I don't see why I should hide that. As a PP said, I am drained and need the time to refresh, regroup, and to reconnect with my dc.

I took a massive pay cut in order to work term time only. Should I tell others better paid than me not to be pleased about their comfortable incomes, nor mention the things that they can afford but I cannot? Of course not!

WhatWouldJohnSay · 19/12/2019 23:59

I'm a Mental health nurse. This year is the first year in ten years that I've been off for the Christmas. I know how lucky I am.
It's shit to work Christmas. It's shit to leave your family. Its shit when others don't see that. But it's the nature of the job.
I worked very hard to get my specialist post. I have the job of my dreams but I know lots that aren't there yet. You will get there too ❤️

CheshireChat · 19/12/2019 23:59

I think it's absolutely fine to mention it and be happy about it, just don't brag about it.

5foot5 · 20/12/2019 00:00

Well I expect people who have two weeks off have to take it out of their annual leave. It's not just a gift, they are presumably in jobs where it is not essential that someone is there all the time.

Where I work now the company decided we would close between Christmas and New Year so everybody has to use three of their days annual leave for that. Suits me fine but I could imagine some people might feel a bit miffed that they couldn't use those three days when they choose too. This year I have chosen to take an additional two days so I can finish this Friday. Not bragging - just my choice how I use my leave.

I appreciate that not everyone has the flexibility to take the leave exactly when they want but presumably you do get some holidays at other times of the year.

nowaypose · 20/12/2019 00:01

They should close all stores on Boxing Day, nobody needs to go shopping and everyone can survive two days without a shop.

I teach so I do indeed have two weeks off. My DH finishes early tomorrow and doesn’t return until the 2nd of Jan, he’s an engineer. I appreciate we are lucky but we did choose our careers with this in mind.

AlunWynsKnee · 20/12/2019 00:01

Everyone envies someone.
You can't live your life resenting people who you think have it easier. It only eats you up.

YABVVVVVU

We all have things in our lives that are lovely and things in our lives that are rubbish.
We all have good times and bad times
We all have perks of our jobs and downsides to our jobs.

I actually LIKE the people I am friends with on social media, therefore I am happy to see their happy times. I like to see some photos from a great trip even if I couldn't afford to make that trip myself. I like to see a photo if someone buys their first house, even if I'm not buying a new house myself. I like to see a family celebrating a parent's big birthday, even though my parents dies relatively young.
Just because I can't have it doesn't mean I can't be happy for someone else's celebrations / happy time.
what a weird attitude you have.
If you can't be happy for someone else, I suggest you come off social media altogether. Hmm
