Not to brag. Essential services are working.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working.
We get it you have 2 weeks off. Please have some respect.

OP posts:
Mamalexi343 · 22/12/2019 07:28

My DH has 2 weeks off, he doesn't get any other time off during the year, it's a family business so he's expected to work and they do a lot of work in schools so when the schools are empty for the holidays they go in and do the work. We don't get family holidays I have to take the kids on my own so you better believe when he has those 2 weeks off we're excited because I get to actually see my DH and he gets to spend time with DC.

so yes yabu to say that those who are excited to have time off are bragging because maybe that's the only time they get to spend with their families or maybe they're just happy to have time off, either way get over it, it happens not everyone works the same times.

Parttimers · 22/12/2019 08:04

@PlumsGalore don’t worry your little head!! I love the cold weather, and love my family and won’t need to get on a motorway at all!! I will also have 8 weeks off over the summer to get the sun and my DH also has 6 months of every year off (and paid) due to the nature of his job (4 week on/4 weeks off) he is also off for Christmas Grin

Tartan333 · 22/12/2019 08:22

YABU! I'm a mental health nurse and worked Christmas Day and Boxing Day for years on the wards. I'm now on community and got just over 2 weeks off which is amazing to me but I've worked hard to get my community job so I'm going to enjoy it!

FaveNumberIs2 · 22/12/2019 08:34

How rude!

I’m part of that sector who gets 13 weeks off a year, including a Christmas break from 20th dec to 6th jan, but on the flip side of that, I can only go on holiday during school holidays which is the most expensive and busiest time, I don’t get to choose my holidays, I’m in work for 7am doing a heavy job and although my yearly pay is divided equally over the 12 month, there is in fact SIX AND A HALF WEEKS where I don’t get paid at all.

I chose my career to fit in with bringing up my children as my husband works full time and we couldn’t afford to pay someone else to look after them, and we didn’t have any extended family to help with childcare.

Now my children have left home, I’ve climbed a notch up in my career and am looking forward to a break with my husband while still helping my kids with their limited holidays (off to daughter’s for Christmas Day).

So as another poster has said, you chose your career, and we chose ours, do not try and make people like me feel bad because we get Christmas off.

fedup21 · 22/12/2019 08:45

OP apparently “bragging” in a thread about summer holidays 2020.

Grin

We can’t afford a holiday next year...don’t brag, OP.

Have some respect.

DonutMan · 22/12/2019 08:56

I got up for work at 02:30 today as I have to start my week a day early if I want Xmas eve off (the alternative being doing my usual 14:00 - 00:00 shift on xmas eve). I'm truly knackered as I did my usual shift on Friday and hence didn't get to sleep until 3am Saturday, making it impossible to get an early night after sleeping in the day.

I'm back in on the 27th too, but despite missing the holidays I used to have in office jobs I'd never go back.

SimonJT · 22/12/2019 09:04

I get boxing day until new years day ‘off’ as the office is shut, we have to do at least 24 hours of wfh from during that period.

If you didn’t like the xmas arrangements why go for that particular career?

DonutMan · 22/12/2019 09:09

In my case it's because I enjoy the other 51 weeks of the year more than in other jobs. To be fair though, I'm still waiting for my contract (three months on!) and they only mentioned on Friday about the one small difference to last role being working the Sunday before Xmas. Driving a 32 ton truck around right pedestrianised areas in the dark hasn't been fun on two hours sleep!

NeverForgetYourDreams · 22/12/2019 09:10

I gift my staff two weeks off extra to annual leave every Christmas. We finished Friday and aren't back til 6th. Closed our company. Why should I feel guilty about having two weeks off. As a business owner even on my family holidays (3 weeks annual leave a year) i deal with work emails and calls. Sorry you are in a job that means you are working when I'm not but I'm not going to feel bad about it!

DonutMan · 22/12/2019 09:10

'Tight' not 'right'.

RidgedPerfection · 22/12/2019 09:25

I have never had two weeks off over Christmas and either myself or my DH has always worked Christmas Day, Boxing Day and the other public holidays. This year I am fortunate in that I have Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day off. DH is working Christmas Day and Boxing Day but off from 27th Dec - 06th January so we get to spend time together on New Year's Day and at the weekends.

We both chose (and love) our careers and knew that anti - social work patterns came with the territory.

I hope that all those who have the whole festive period off work have a wonderful time - some of my colleagues have as they have taken annual leave. It's strange to begrudge other people happiness; I have some leave mid January when people might be feeling the post Christmas slump and intend to enjoy it.

FlyingPenguine · 22/12/2019 09:54

Yabu. I've worked really hard the last few weeks so I can have two weeks off over christmas. I'm not bragging about it in public or disrespecting those who will be working. When I work and others are on holiday I'm not a snowflake and I doht expect them to hide their time off Confused

Palaver1 · 22/12/2019 10:54

@StillMedusa thanks to people like you who have earned that well deserved break.
Are you my daughter's teacher.
Thank you for everything you do xx

Palaver1 · 22/12/2019 11:07

We all choose what we want to do.
Did anyone offend you you sound mighty pissed off

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 22/12/2019 11:55

I finished at 12 on Friday 20th and don't go back to work until 6th January (welll technically I don't need to go into work until 8th Jan as I'm working from home 6th/7th). And no, I didn't need to use any annual leave for this time off. We have closure times in our college over and above our annual leave and this is one of those periods. You are being so so unresonable BTW. I used to work in care and would do 48 hour shifts over Christmas/new year etc. Plus I've had other jobs where I've worked Christmas eve. Don't try to put everyone else on a downer because you are not happy with your job!!

AlpacaGoodnight · 22/12/2019 13:57

YABVU if you aren't happy in your job apply for new ones that don't involve working Christmas

TARSCOUT · 22/12/2019 14:04

I am finished on Friday and don't go back to 7th. I chose not to work in retail or care or essential services and haven't remotely felt the need to mention it to anyone, until told not to.........

autumndreaming · 22/12/2019 14:07

I've never encountered anyone bragging about this

recklessruby · 22/12/2019 14:12

Finished a long autumn term friday and am tired. Happy not to be back till 7 jan but not bragging about it.
I used to work in retail and always did the 10am to 2pm xmas day shift, working family life around it.
We had a lot of fun that day, no delivery, no papers etc and a lot of customers were in a great mood. It is what you make it.
Dd works with autistic adults and will work part of xmas day. She s not complaining as it s her dream job.

MimiCaeger · 22/12/2019 14:45

You’re bonkers OP. I’ve got 10 days off over Xmas and new year. I am working 1 day in the middle

I’ve not had more than 2 days off work, and have been regularly working 7 day weeks since October 2018.

I’m really excited. I’m sure you too have annual leave.
Let it lie

sideorderofchips · 22/12/2019 14:47

I get two weeks off. I work in education.

I don't however get to chose when I take my holidays and I also earn less than I would if I didn't work 52 weeks a year.

ManiacalLapwing · 22/12/2019 15:09

I get Christmas to New Year off, that's six days of my 28 days statutory holiday entitlement that I can't take when I choose. If it was up to me I'd want a couple of days off in that period to celebrate Christmas and take the rest when the days are longer and the weather warmer.

I'm excited though, because I still have time off, the same as I'm sure you are when you take your holiday. YABU.

MumPo71 · 22/12/2019 15:36

Yes.
You are being very unreasonable. Have some respect.

stairway · 22/12/2019 15:51

As a nurse and married to a Muslim, Christmas is no more for me, but I do like doing a festive shop on Boxing Day and getting everything half price. I don’t miss the stress of Xmas now I no longer get one.

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 22/12/2019 16:14

@stairway why did you have to be the one to give up your faith?
