Not to brag. Essential services are working.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working.
We get it you have 2 weeks off. Please have some respect.

SingingSands · 20/12/2019 00:11

Pffft oh for goodness sake OP!

I didn't have a holiday this summer, but I genuinely didn't feel jealous of anyone that did. I certainly didn't go round the office pulling a sad face and asking my colleagues not to talk about their summer hols.

MrsEnglishh · 20/12/2019 00:13

Bollocks to that. I spent years studying to do what I do, I'll enjoy the holidays I knew I'd get when I chose my career. HTH.

kittykatkitty · 20/12/2019 00:14

I'm off this year on Xmas day
Dd1 is working all of Christmas and is of New year day
Dp is off now till the 6th jan
It is what it is.

Lipperfromchipper · 20/12/2019 00:15

Dh has 4 weeks off...and it’s Paid!!yippee!!! Not in education sector!

RaininSummer · 20/12/2019 00:16

I have two weeks off but it all comes from my paltry annual leave allowance which means when you are off in the summer, for instance, I will be working. I would prefer time off when it isn't freezing and raining.

MaJoady · 20/12/2019 00:16

Another one who is very pleased to have (more than) two weeks off and will happily tell people if it comes up in conversation.

For kids we accept that we have to "keep everything even", ie wrap the same amount and size of presents for siblings. But by the time we get to being adults, I would assured that most would have grown out of that...

2018SoFarSoGreat · 20/12/2019 00:18

I am delighted for anyone who gets time off to spend with loved ones, or doing whatever makes them happy. More power to them. All of them.

I am also sad, but grateful, to those who do not, and will keep the wheels on the bus during the holidays. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

I work half day on the 24th, then am, returning on the 2nd. I can't wait.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 20/12/2019 00:19

Posted too soon.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

Repeating this helps me be less bitter :)

LaurieFairyCake · 20/12/2019 00:20

I'm self employed and taking 2 weeks off

CANNOT WAIT

If You're off for Christmas
GetawayfromthatWelshtart · 20/12/2019 00:20

Oh sod off.

This year for the first time in donkey years I have Xmas off and not back til the New Year.

This is because I have worked my arse off all year and haven't taken any leave. I also was a carer for about 10 years so I know all about no rest but I've earned my break and if I want to shout it from the hill tops I bloody well will.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 20/12/2019 00:25

I’ve got 2 weeks off, but as I’m freelance, I won’t get paid. My choice. Other people save up annual leave to take 2 weeks off, their choice. My daughter is working long hours throughout the festive period, her choice. What’s your choice OP, to slag other people off for how they plan their working lives? Why don’t you have some respect for that yourself?

Popc0rn · 20/12/2019 00:38

It's rubbish having to work over Christmas yes OP, but getting grumpy about other people having time off won't make you feel better about it. This is the first Christmas in 5 years that I've not worked on Christmas Day Xmas Smile, but I always try and book some annual leave at some point in December so I can relax and feel a bit Christmassy before the big day. Could you do similar?

rudolfsquiffy · 20/12/2019 00:41

I'm a childminder, 2 weeks off, normally have only one week but not needed. I'm self employed and bloody happy exhausted

People who know me are really happy I'm getting a nice long break!

RainingFrogsAndHats · 20/12/2019 00:42

I've got 2 1/2 weeks off. Whoop whoop!

VERY happy about it, and will tell anyone who'll listen.

Will also mention, I'm paid for term time only and no choice about when I can take leave and lots of stress and not well paid when I'm there. but I also have the best job in the world and I'm happy about that too. Skint, but happy. Them's the breaks!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 20/12/2019 00:46

Oh don't be daft. Let people enjoy things!

CareOfPunts · 20/12/2019 00:46

YABU, I’m taking the time off out of my annual holiday entitlement, I probably get similar holiday allowance to most people, just happens this is when I am using mine

schafernaker · 20/12/2019 00:50

I’m sure you have a degree of flexibility about when to book your leave unlike the education sector who get stung for the most expensive holidays! So I will enjoy my 2 weeks off and brag about it if I like, I may even go and pay over the odds for a break away, that you could book leave for and get at a third of the price. It’s all swings and roundabouts I’m afraid

managedmis · 20/12/2019 00:51

I have 13 days off and I'm gonna enjoy EVERY last one of them.

NerrSnerr · 20/12/2019 00:57

I'm a nurse. I have worked my fair share of Christmases and other holidays (off this Christmas Day though). You know the score when you sign up to shift work, it's just part of the job.

All jobs have their perks. Shift work is rubbish when you have to work holidays but it's lovely being able to go shopping and stuff on a Tuesday when it's quiet!

Glitteryone · 20/12/2019 00:58

Extremely unreasonable - all employed people in the UK have a statutory entitlement to paid holidays per annum. Just because some people’s professions dictate that they’re unable to use their entitlement over the Christmas period, does not mean that those who aren’t restricted shouldn’t ‘brag’ as you put it.

CharlottesPleb · 20/12/2019 01:02

Looking at your update makes sense of the OP.

Before you boast, people saving up their holiday for this time or that time are not necessarily more fortunate than anyone else, in fact I'd say the most common users of long Christmas holidays in my field are people who do not or cannot take holiday the rest of the year, or who always cover for everyone else, and only get half or worse of their annual leave at all. I expect it's the same for many.

GetUpAgain · 20/12/2019 01:08

I agree it's very disheartening when people brag/say they've worked so hard they deserve/are ready for a break... Not the kindest thing for someone to hear who also works hard and deserves a break but isn't getting one.

I hope everyone on this thread gets a bit of a rest here and there at least. Cake

JockTamsonsBairns · 20/12/2019 01:10

I'm not sure I'm really getting this thread? I was a chef for years, and worked every single day of the festive period, xmas eve, xmas day, boxing day - the lot. Early starts, late finishes, split shifts - and it was 70/80 hours a week of hot, high pressure work, for which I got paid around £38k. Two years ago, I jacked it in, I'd had enough of never being around with my family at Christmas, or even on weekend evenings to sit with them and watch BGT or whatever. So, I came over to the dark side, and now work as a school cook. 9-2.15pm, term time only. I now get paid £12k, but that doesn't matter - I've got school holidays off, and I can now be at home for my kids getting home from school.
I'd never brag about it though (does anyone brag about being a school cook?). Money's tighter, obviously, but I've made my choices and I'm happier now. Wont stop me high fiving the teachers on the way out the door on the last day of term.

FrenchBoule · 20/12/2019 01:14

DH in construction, me in private sector both off. Both companies shut down for Christmas and New Year, we use some of the holidays to cover it.

Humphs27 · 20/12/2019 01:17

I do get what you mean. The constant “when are you finished for Christmas?” ... well actually I am not , my job doesn’t “finish” for Christmas , people do still get sick you know Barbara !
