Not to brag. Essential services are working.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working.
We get it you have 2 weeks off. Please have some respect.

OP posts:

For the first time in ten years both myself and my partner are going to be off at the same time over Christmas and we have 2 days to ourselves in that time as well, so I think yabu that I am not allowed to say fuck all about that, but I wont be marching into the local hospital and yelling it.

I also wont be going to the shops on boxing day either, as my little protest against shop workers having to work

BarbaraofSeville · 20/12/2019 06:04

Our office closes between Christmas day and NYD so everyone has a minimum of 8 days off. We have to use 3 days annual leave just for that, we're not allowed to work - there's a few people who'd rather save the leave to use at a time of their choosing.

The people taking 2 weeks off are using 7 days annual leave to do that, it's not a free gift, it's how they are using their standard entitlement.

I realise not everyone has a choice of what job they have, but you know the T&Cs when you join and still get a minimum of 20 days leave plus BHs so there's nothing to stop you taking 2 weeks off at another time of year. If you have DC and have to use your leave to cover childcare in the school holidays, again that's a choice you have made where you would have been fully aware that having DC would lead to many years of restrictions on holiday use.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 20/12/2019 06:07

Thems the breaks.
I finish today until 14th Jan, having saved up a lot of holidays last year and I'm bloody exhausted. After years of working in the retail industry I really appreciate this time off.

Engineering2001 · 20/12/2019 06:25

Really pisses me off when others try to tell others what to do. Surely you were aware OP when you started your job that your hours would not be social? That's not our fault. I'm sure you enjoy your leave at other times.

Inferiorbeing · 20/12/2019 06:32

I don't get the point of this post? I'm off for two weeks yeah but DP is working Christmas eve-29th on night shifts. We have different jobs and one of my perks is the time off and one of his is the money?

Iwantmychairback · 20/12/2019 06:34

I’m off for two weeks, finish today and back on 6th Jan.
I would rather have less time off and be able to have more time off in Summer when the weather is better and days are longer, but the factory closes so I am told that I have to take annual leave now (or not get paid). So, not all of us are bragging about having two weeks off.

Alfr · 20/12/2019 06:37

I don't understand why you're so upset. Has someone been mean to you?
I shall be working every day next week, and will be on my own on the 25th. I'm not bothered about it - have simply delayed celebrating Christmas until the 29th when my son returns from his fathers, and my parents arrive. No biggie

maddiemookins16mum · 20/12/2019 06:37

Oh give over.
Who made you the fun police.
I’m off now until the 02 Jan...HOORAY.

JustMe9 · 20/12/2019 06:39

I finish today until 2nd Jan!! But I worked bloody hard all year and didnt have any summer holidays so I well deserve this break 🎉

Bickles · 20/12/2019 06:40

I have often worked Christmas Eve and in between Christmas and New Year but am part time and this year the bank holidays are my working days. I have taken 1 day on annual leave and finished on Wednesday- back on 2nd. It’s a lovely thought.
Thank you to all those like healthcare who keep going no matter what.

putputput · 20/12/2019 06:41

I've worked every Christmas for years as a nurse. I've just gone on maternity and DC2 could appear any day, but I am bloody loving being off at this time of year.

midsomermurderess · 20/12/2019 06:46

What a sanctimonious post.

Stravapalava · 20/12/2019 06:50

Bloody hell OP. I work part time in healthcare so when it's my turn to work xmas I bloody well do it. It's part of the job. I don't martyr myself over it. This year's rota is great, none of the key days are my working days so why shouldn't I be chuffed? And yes I do have young children, but I knew what I was taking on when I went for the job, so you've got to suck it up!

Keepmewarm · 20/12/2019 06:54

I’m off for the day this year and I’m so excited. I’ve worked the last four.
I don’t mind working because we all do our bit and I am pleased for my colleagues if they are off and I’m not.
It’s one day.

Isleepinahedgefund · 20/12/2019 06:54

FFS really?

I've got 2.5 weeks off - this is the only substantial break I've had all year for one reason and another, I also saved up my leave for it. I'm bloody well going to enjoy it thank you very much without a pang of guilt.

PlumsGalore · 20/12/2019 06:56

I could have booked two weeks off. Hell no, who wants to be off with everyone Else? Not me. My two days off will be spent running around after everyone else. Christmas working is better than any other time working, at least there is a good atmosphere and less to do.

DD will be working Christmas Eve and Christmas Day nights in A&E and portable X-ray, her shift pattern fell that way but she could have requested at least one day off. There are always people in her trust ok with working those shifts. Her European colleagues go home in the new year when flights are cheaper, some staff appreciate the extra enhancements and the trust has a policy that enables non Christian faiths guaranteed religious holiday leave at other times in exchange for working Christmas.

DIL works in a hotel, she is starting at 5am Christmas morning 15 miles away, so she can be away for 12.

I think you will find that most families have somone that is going to be working over at least part of this period, if not everyone.

For those that have two weeks off, I say enjoy your festive holiday in the cold and damp, stuck visiting relatives on the motorway and not being able to get through the shops because of the sales. 😄 no envy from me.

Vulpine · 20/12/2019 06:57

Have you thought about a change in career? Hmm

emmetgirl · 20/12/2019 06:57

I own a business and have one day off but I'm not in the least bothered that other people have more time off than that.

Spacey306 · 20/12/2019 06:58

I work in a small factory which my boss owns. Trimmings and dance wear. We get from December 23rd till 3rd Jan, however we do use our own holidays except Christmas day and new year's Day.

lancaster · 20/12/2019 07:00

I don't have 2 weeks off but don't that other people do. What a miserable attitude.

TreeSwayer · 20/12/2019 07:02

Dh used to work for a company that shut their office for 2 weeks over Christmas, it was lovely.

He also worked for a company that gave their staff 7 weeks holiday a year.

Now he is self employed, so we take the hit financially and he matches up his holiday with the children being off school.

But yes, of course we are aware that other people are working. I used to serve people their Christmas dinner on Christmas day when I was a waitress from 14 years old.

CalleighDoodle · 20/12/2019 07:03

what a ridiculous entitled thread!

How about when people go on holiday in term time, therefore costing a third of the price of going in school holidays, never tell a soul?!

Ive worked christmas, including long christmas days in previous jobs in hotels. I chose a career where I wouldnt have to work weekends and christmas again.

Maybe if people are so unhappy with the days that are necessary to work in their industries, find other employment.

And hey guess what op, me and my husband are off for the full two weeks. He works in marketing and booked it off. Ill tell him he must tell no one, as someone who took their 5.6 weeks holiday at a different time of the year regrets their life choices bitterly.

Some of us are not doing any of that and in 2 weeks I am going to have a weeks worth of lie in and my partner is going to have the other week

policeandthieves · 20/12/2019 07:06

I have the bank Holidays off ( but have often worked them)
I'm in essential services.
I chose this job, I knew thats how it would be. It's still a break and will be lovely.
No extra respect required

cokehoke · 20/12/2019 07:06

I finished on Wednesday & will return on the 6th, DH has a bit less. I'm excited but don't boast about it.

The benefit of having immigrant parents & living near my parents & in-laws means zero travelling which is great & I find my area of London becomes less busy & quieter which is nice.
