Not to brag. Essential services are working.

Non Essentials like retail, events and hospitality are working.
We get it you have 2 weeks off. Please have some respect.

And I'm leaving my Asd daughter on Christmas day to support families to care for their loved Ones

And how does your daughter who has ASD feel about that?
You're not conscripted into service, you have choices, you can re train if you want to

cokehoke · 20/12/2019 07:09

Oh & pre dc in a different career I've worked plenty of Christmas Eves & days over Christmas as I didn't have to travel to visit family.

I’m not sure I understand this thread. Different jobs have different working requirement.

Everyone gets leave as some point surely? Why so bitter?

mindutopia · 20/12/2019 07:13

My last day was yesterday and I don’t go back until the 7th. Two of those days are annual leave, but the rest are paid leave that we all get.

I’ve worked incredibly hard, spent a lot of years in education and training to get this position, and in a normal week leave for work at 6am, get home at 7pm, put my dc to bed and carry on working til 10-10:30pm. None off us get holidays really, we always have to work even when away with family, if something happens that needs to be dealt with. So I have earned and enjoy the little bit of time I have off over Christmas with my dc, who I miss out on seeing much of the week the other 50 weeks a year.

I have worked Christmas in the past and I know it’s crap, but you make the best of it. We did ‘Christmas’ another day and loved it.

Fishcakey · 20/12/2019 07:13

I'm off for a whole week! I was in retail for years and worked every bloody Christmas and now I'm not so ya boo sucks everyone I am on holiday!!!!!!!!!!

Marylou2 · 20/12/2019 07:14

Hugely grateful to everyone who works in public services over Christmas and indeed nights/weekends and other public holidays. I've had a mix of both in my life. I used to be a nurse and always worked Christmas as before I had children I thought it was only fair that people with kids were at least there to open presents with them on Christmas morning. Now lucky enough to be off every Christmas. I don't begrudge teachers their time off over Christmas either. Such a tough job.

CactusAndCacti · 20/12/2019 07:14

Who are these people who are bragging?

Anyway, like others I am off, but the office is shut and we have to take annual leave to do so. I have chosen to finish today but I am back on the 2nd so it balances out for us all.

Lonewolfclub · 20/12/2019 07:15

Don’t be so sanctimonious op . It’s not very nice

PositiveVibez · 20/12/2019 07:16

I finished yesterday an am now off for 17 days and I am fucking BUZZING about it.

My husband, however is in Christmas Eve (dd's bday), Christmas day, boxing day, new year's eve and new year's Day.

It's the way his shifts have fell.

He is not jealous of me though. Just happy that I am able to have the time off to look after our daughter.

Don't be bitter OP. I'm sure everyone understands that that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

MutedUser · 20/12/2019 07:18

I would also like those who go on holiday abroad to not mention their holidays .Those who are slim not to mention that either. Geez OP get a grip or get a new job.

I’ve got 2weeks off.

Last day tomorrow , then nothing til early January
But , I’m self employed and won’t be earning anything ,I really need a break
Grown up DC coming here for a week , and I’d rather spend my time with them , than working

frumpety · 20/12/2019 07:34

I actually quite like working Christmas day , its generally a really lovely atmosphere where we work. What time are you working until OP ?

Bunnyfuller · 20/12/2019 07:36

What a peculiar post.

I don’t think there’s anyone who is not aware many people have to work over the big days. I think there’s a vast amount of people who have worked these days at some point in their career. And will again. My DH is off for 3 days for the first time in 13 years.

you sound resentful of the fact that you are on duty for families in need - perhaps you need to review your career in the New Year. Christmas can be extra difficult for some families, and even more so those needing support. I hope you try to bring them a little bit of joy, and don’t show your bitterness.

longsigh · 20/12/2019 07:40

Can anyone who goes on holiday in September when it's hot cheap and quiet not talk about it either because it upsets me! 😂

OhTheRoses · 20/12/2019 07:44

I finish today until the 2nd. I am bloody exhausted op. I work 45/50 hours pw.

MIL arrives Sunday for a week, DS's girlfriend on Christmas Eve. Full house and hosting here for at least 4 days. Work takes on an appeal.

My grandparents were farmers, goid friends are vicars. Believe me they have it worse. Life choices and all that.

Doidoit19 · 20/12/2019 07:45

YABU. I've spent the past 22 years working Christmas, or some aspect of it. First as a retail manager and now in the emergency services. If people have two weeks off at Christmas and want to shout it from the rooftops then so be it. Just because we have chosen to work in roles where Christmas working is required doesnt mean other people cant be happy about the fact that they dont. I'm currently looking at a change of career into education and after all these years I will most definitely be 'bragging' when i get my first two weeks off at Christmas!!

christmasathome · 20/12/2019 07:46

Eh? I work in education but don't get all the holidays. Due to my job I hardly manage many full weeks off through the year - every half term i have to work minimum 1 day, in the summer i had to work one day of the second week of my holidays but I can't be off in term time.

I don't get upset when my NHS friends and retail friends are bragging about their multiple two week and week long holidays and jetting off mid term for lovely cheap foreign holidays.

Christmas is the ONLY time in the year I actually get two full weeks off. So no I'm not going pretend I'm not off and enjoying a full two weeks off!

Marellaspirit · 20/12/2019 07:48

I'm not going to brag about it but being self employed I'm having a well deserved break after having barely any time off this year and it will be unpaid. I'm only having 2 weeks off because of Christmas/New Year falling midweek, it seemed silly to work odd days around it. Usually I work up to Christmas Eve and go back the day after New Year.

NewName73 · 20/12/2019 07:52

I won't brag OP if you promise not to be sanctimonious.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/12/2019 07:52

Crown Confused [santa] GRINCH!!!

I am sewlf employed. I finish tody and don't have any jobs booked in for the New Year - no work = no pay.

I am REALLY going o enjoy my quiet time. And no amount of guilt tripping will change that!

MERRY CHRISTMAS ONE AND ALL. However you spend it may you spend some of it with those you love Crown Smile

U2HasTheEdge · 20/12/2019 07:56

I finish today and go back on the 2nd. I have taken annual leave. I worked Xmas day last year and NYE evening. The year before I worked the night shift on Xmas eve.

So I am bloody excited to spend over a week with my children and husband this year.

I started a new job last month and up until then I had shit shift patterns. I worked a night shift on a Friday every other week and Sat and Sun the following week, so only really had one Sunday off a fortnight. I felt envious of people doing nice things over the weekend, which is a part of the reason I changed jobs.

Spacerader · 20/12/2019 07:56

Both myself and my partner have two weeks off, completely different job roles, and I dont see why I have to not tell people on off. I can talk about my enjoyment as much as I like. Both my sisters work in the NHS, and both work Christmas, and neither of them begrudge others discussing their enjoyment. Sorry OP yabu
