AIBU to not understand Scotland wishing to leave the U.K., can someone explain to me without being nasty or patronising, why is Scotland’s problem with the U.K.? Even before the U.K. ref

Perspective should mean that we learn from our mistakes but there are people in Scotland who are pretty much racist and hate all English people just because and they make up a large proportion of the 45!

A large march went through Glasgow on Saturday chanting how refugees were welcome here. Are you saying there are no racists in England?

Everyone in Scotland had plenty of choices of party's to vote for. In fact, the only policy the Torys had was to tell Sturgeon no more indeyrefs. It didn't work out for them. 🤣

It doesn't seem to have been passed on to the rest of the UK that many of the Conservative leaflets which arrived through people's doors were pretty much "vote for us to stop the SNP and Independence."

Amortentia · 16/12/2019 14:57

Scottish Greens, Lib Dem's, Brexit party, same choices as in England but with one extra, the SNP. Saying the only voted SNP through lack of choice doesn't stack up. Did everyone who voted Tory do it because of a lack of choice?

slashlover · 16/12/2019 15:00

tabulahrasa But surly they would have been more sympathetic to Scottish needs?

Why would they? They know they can basically ignore the Scotland vote and their party would still be elected. Why piss off the voters who 'matter?

tabulahrasa · 16/12/2019 15:00

“But surly they would have been more sympathetic to Scottish needs”

And what practical difference does that make when it’s a smaller country being run in a union?

MutedUser · 16/12/2019 15:00

Actually two of those parties never had someone standing in my constituency so no I couldn’t have voted for them. Plus voting for Lib Dem’s would have been a wasted vote I think they got less than 500 votes here .

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/12/2019 15:00

Look at the maps of election results and Brexit results, that may have you a clue (for some reason I can't post the images)

Amortentia · 16/12/2019 15:00

I'm beginning to realise this. The only policy they had was about saying no to independence. The leader said it over and over. They did not mention anything else, they couldn't, the used indeyref2 to deflect from Brexit and Boris, both hugely unpopular in Scotland.

Morgan12 · 16/12/2019 15:01

Because we have no political voice.

Scotland voted to remain in the EU. And it doesn't matter. We may aswell have stayed at home and not bothered to vote.

MutedUser · 16/12/2019 15:02

@Amortentia not unpopular to the 1 million Scots who voted for brexit

TuttiCutie · 16/12/2019 15:03

I think Scotland should get Indyref 2, but I'd like to see a fully costed manifesto because everything I've read says that Scotland wouldn't be unable to financially support itself and the EU would not accept it as a country on its own anyway.

Amortentia · 16/12/2019 15:05

I'm sure you'd struggle to locate that1 million now. Although, I'm sure that some are still in favour. You'd need to be very ignorant if you hadn't seen the gov reports on how bad Brexit is going to be for Scotland. We've got a massive export industry compared to England. We have a small population and need EU citizens to come here.

TARSCOUT · 16/12/2019 15:06

I'm in Scotland, you tell me! #still no

Hester54 · 16/12/2019 15:06

slashlover Are you suggesting that even Scottish PM’s didn’t want to help Scotland?

I'd like to see a fully costed manifesto for Brexit. 😂

What have you read so far that makes you think Scotland can't support itself or join EU?

Hester54 · 16/12/2019 15:08

What policies does the SNP want to implement that is different to now ?

Hohonoshow · 16/12/2019 15:09

It wouldn't be up to the SNP. Once independent, we could vote for any party we chose - and they would be the ones to run the country.

cherryblossomgin · 16/12/2019 15:09

I am in Scotland and I am also not sure. I didn't vote for SNP this time because of them going on about a second referendum. I've never felt like independence is important to me and I can't see how its positive thing.

geekone · 16/12/2019 15:09

@slashlover oh goodness no, there are plenty of racists everywhere unfortunately, I just mean there is a lot of internal Scottish English racism.

tabulahrasa · 16/12/2019 15:10

“Are you suggesting that even Scottish PM’s didn’t want to help Scotland?”

It’s not about whether they’d want to or not though.

When you get a clash of interests between Scotland and the rest of the union they have to go with what’s better for the majority, Scotland isn’t the majority.

Amortentia · 16/12/2019 15:11

Surely it a moot point now, there will probably never be another Scottish based PM.

Hester54 · 16/12/2019 15:13

What do you want the existing Parliament to do different to what previous Parliaments haven’t? Policies wise ?

OP posts:
AudacityOfHope · 16/12/2019 15:14

Way to patronise @geekone it's really really nothing to do with sodding Braveheart Hmm

Amortentia · 16/12/2019 15:15

I've never felt like independence is important to me and I can't see how its positive thing.

The current political situation is unlikely to change, there will probably be a right wing Tory gov for at least 10 more years. Are you happy with that? Do you think that's a positive thing? If we say no again how do you think Scotland will be treated in the future?

AlexaShutUp · 16/12/2019 15:16

Personally, I don't understand why so many people wanted to leave the EU either, but they did, so there you have it. Ultimately, I suppose it's about identity as much as anything. I certainly don't think these decisions are based purely on logic, there is a lot of emotion involved.

That said, I think there is far more logic in the Scottish wish for independence than there is in the UK leaving the EU. Politically, there is a very wide gulf between England and Scotland and it must be gutting to know that the Scottish vote will always be outnumbered.

tabulahrasa · 16/12/2019 15:16

“What do you want the existing Parliament to do different to what previous Parliaments haven’t? Policies wise ?”

It’s irrelevant really, you’d get as many different answers as there are voters.

The point is that the government doesn’t actually represent Scotland, it can’t do.
