Aibu: PJs with pants underneath at night?*

I do, partner does, and so do the kids. However we didn't when we were kids, and my nieces don't when they come to stay. Was reading something on the NHS site about worms recently (prompted by the wildly inappropriate 'medicating-someone-else's-kid' post a few days ago - I mean the action was inappropriate, not the "thread") and it suggested wearing pants with PJs to combat thread-worms, implying that ppl don't normally??

Aibu in that we all do wear pants with nightwear as it's basic hygiene to me ?

*Not a pants-troll, but you'll either believe me or you won't....

Stop with the breathing bits. Bits don't breathe.

whatashower · 12/12/2019 16:54

No wish to confuse the binary pants or no pants dilemma but surely the type of pants is the critical issue! Cotton - breathe.......synthetic - nocturnal Petri dish!

StarlingsInSummer · 12/12/2019 16:56

DS wears clean pants under his pjs, after his bath, then gets a clean pair in the morning. DH and I don’t wear pjs.

CottonSock · 12/12/2019 16:56

Sleep naked and a 1 tog duvet. I'm only hot at sleep times. Bizarre

AliasGrape · 12/12/2019 16:57

I tend to have a cycle of one day showering before bed and putting fresh pjs on, without pants then the next day I might sleep in same pjs with the pants I’ve had on all day and shower the next morning.

That sounds far more thought out and intentional than the reality, but thinking about it that’s how it tends to work out.

I’m either or to be honest. Doesn’t much bother me either way.

beautifulstranger101 · 12/12/2019 16:58

When people say "breathe" they dont literally mean breathing. They mean: allowing the air to circulate around their nether regions means they are less likely to become hot and sweaty which can cause thrush. Bits also dont need to be wrapped up tight in multiple layers. Its personal preference!

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/12/2019 17:00

The link to worms is based on the fact that the poorest people often have the least access to soap / water and probably also less likely to be able to ‘waste’ clean underwear at night.

ButterflyBook · 12/12/2019 17:00

Sorry but I have personal experience that it is

There has been lengthy discussion about this on here in the past. Some women who experience little to no discharge find it difficult to believe that there are women who do. And that it's perfectly normal, but we are all different. I do myself and feel more comfortable in pants. I'm at one end of normal and the people who confidently remain dry are at the other end of normal. We are all normal, but different.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 12/12/2019 17:00

For all the pant wearers, it must feel you are almost sleeping in the same amount of clothes as day time.

Seriously, a small pair of cotton undies really doesn't make that much difference to the actual amount of clothes you've got on. FWIW, we don't have the heating on in the bedrooms and usually have the window open at night unless it is several degrees below. Warm bed, cold room.

steff13 · 12/12/2019 17:00

It's either pants or PJs here (or nothing). Both seems really odd to me.

Same

diddl · 12/12/2019 17:01

" Unless you are sleeping in the buff with no covers, it ain't gonna breathe."

Absolutely!

I probably didn't as a kid due to bath & then pjs on.

I tend to sleep in just pants or pants & t shirt.

Pants plus pjs sound like too many layers to me!

Coffeeisnecessary · 12/12/2019 17:01

Never even thought of NOT wearing pants under pj's to be honest!! Change pants for night after shower and then in the morning after shower too, my children change theirs once at night after shower and wear same pair in the morning, saves having to wash pj's every day! Those that say it's seems crazy to take 14 pairs of pants for a 7 day holiday, better that then 7 pairs of pj's surely?!

Drum2018 · 12/12/2019 17:02

What a ridiculous notion that your bits need to breathe. I have worn pants under pjs all my life and my bits are just fine, as are my kids. Unless you wear clean pj bottoms each night then I personally think it's pretty grim not to wear pants underneath them.

Celebelly · 12/12/2019 17:02

Only when I'm on my period. Otherwise never!

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 12/12/2019 17:04

For all the pant wearers, it must feel you are almost sleeping in the same amount of clothes as day time.

You have NO idea how much I feel the cold or how many layers I usually have on during the day! Grin

LemonScentedStickyBat · 12/12/2019 17:05

Wear pants or don’t, but if you are wearing pyjama bottoms there is no extra “air” circulating, sorry.

Celebelly · 12/12/2019 17:05

Just keep the same pants on from the day

Nooooo!!! Wearing the same pants for 24 hours?
Envy This is the first time I've ever been horrified on a MN cleanliness thread as I am a slattern! But this cannot go unremarked on!

DontMakeMeShushYou · 12/12/2019 17:05

When people say "breathe" they dont literally mean breathing. They mean: allowing the air to circulate around their nether regions means they are less likely to become hot and sweaty which can cause thrush.

If it were really necessary to allow the air to circulate around your nether regions to keep thrush at bay, it would be more effective to go commando under a skirt during the day when you are moving around than to attempt it within the warm moist environment of your bed.

BarbedBloom · 12/12/2019 17:06

Nope, I sleep naked. But wouldn't wear pants to bed full stop

FizzyIce · 12/12/2019 17:07

I do , I have cotton ones that I wear under pj’s ,different to the underwear I wear in the day .
Never had thrush or anything else like that and have always done it and so does dd .

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 12/12/2019 17:08

Surely if you didn't wear pants under pjs you'd have to change your pjs every day for hygiene reasons? It's easier to change pants than pjs every day.
I'd feel weird and uncomfortable if I didn't wear pants underneath nightwear and the whole 'needs to breathe' argument is BS. As long as you're wearing cotton pants there's no issue. I've never had thrush in my life so I'm pretty sure wearing pants at night is not impacting on health.

I have a feeling that a lot of the people who aren't changing their pjs regularly enough as a non-pants wearer are probably the same people who don't wash their bedding every week Confused

beautifulstranger101 · 12/12/2019 17:10

@dontmakemeshushyou
Who says I dont go commando during the day?! I often do.
I dont understand people getting mad about this- do what you bloody well want. Some people (including me) feel claustrophobic with pants on underneath PJs. It doesnt make me "nasty" or "wrong", its personal preference.

MaryShelley1818 · 12/12/2019 17:10

I sleep in the buff but if I have pjs on in the evening I would always wear pants underneath. DH is the opposite and never wears boxers under pjs. DS is a toddler so still in a nappy.

Clangus00 · 12/12/2019 17:12

I don’t (but I did as a child). My DH does. My DD will when it’s time.

Clangus00 · 12/12/2019 17:13

Although....sometimes I do.
