Aibu: PJs with pants underneath at night?*

I do, partner does, and so do the kids. However we didn't when we were kids, and my nieces don't when they come to stay. Was reading something on the NHS site about worms recently (prompted by the wildly inappropriate 'medicating-someone-else's-kid' post a few days ago - I mean the action was inappropriate, not the "thread") and it suggested wearing pants with PJs to combat thread-worms, implying that ppl don't normally??

Aibu in that we all do wear pants with nightwear as it's basic hygiene to me ?

*Not a pants-troll, but you'll either believe me or you won't....

My mother was a midwife and as a child I wasn’t allowed to wear knickers to bed because “private bits need a good airing!”

Does anyone else find it odd that we wrap babies bits up in nappies 24 hours a day for the first couple of years of their lives and then, once they are old enough not to have to sit in their own piss, we suddenly get all twitchy about them needing to air their bits for hygiene reasons?

EvaHarknessRose · 12/12/2019 17:14

I knew the Daily Mail would know - apparently pants in bed no good for male fertility, menopausal women, creates more bacteria and going without pants can lower blood pressure.

JorisBonson · 12/12/2019 17:15

God no. Bra then pants off as soon as I get in, not to be replaced til morning (if I'm going anywhere).

CornishMaid1 · 12/12/2019 17:17

I didn't when a young child, but started to I think when I was in my teens.

I always wear pants under pjs these days. I cannot be bothered to have to have a clean pair of pjs every day (we shower in the morning rather than at night) and without I would have thought you would get uncomfortable with the middle seam riding right up.

I think it may also depend on the type of pants - synthetic type material or for people on thongs I get no, but for nice covering cotton ones then yes as they are nice and comfy. DH wears boxers under his pjs.

ginyogarepeat · 12/12/2019 17:18

I've never understood this "letting bits breathe" malarkey. All my underwear is 100% cotton and any time I've gone without my pjs are rubbing against my bits anyway - they're never that loose that there's much breathing going on!
Now a nightie I could understand....

Northernsoullover · 12/12/2019 17:19

I guess it depends on the pants doesn't it? I only ever wear 100% cotton and sleep in mine all year round (not the same pair Wink) finding 100% cotton isn't always easy and I assume that someone must be buying the non natural fibres. If I wore those no way could I keep them on overnight.
I hate being without underwear though. Like a pp they are only off for a shower. I even argued with the midwife that I wanted to keep them on longer.

Emeraldshamrock · 12/12/2019 17:21

Definitely no pants under PJs in this house.
I'd Imagine it gets sweaty with two layers and a duvet.

TriangularRatbag · 12/12/2019 17:22

Naked, no pants or pyjamas.

dontcallmeduck · 12/12/2019 17:25

I wear pants under pj’s. My youngest doesn’t but eldest does as it helps him wake for a wee.
I never used to but (TMI) I have more discharge after children and it just feels gross without pants.

Emeraldshamrock · 12/12/2019 17:25

@DontMakeMeShushYou I always gave my babies nappy free time for bum breathing throughout the day.

Elvesdontdomagic · 12/12/2019 17:26

YABU to not know that's it's normal not to wear pants under pjs. YANBU to wear them if you want. I wouldn't put the kids in them though, that's a bit strange?

notforonesecond · 12/12/2019 17:27

Always pants for me. I’m under the covers with my legs together and pj bottoms on - how on earth are my bits going to “breathe” any better like that.

No thanks, pants stop me feeling sticky, I’m keeping my pants.

Never had thrush either so let that one go.

Leflic · 12/12/2019 17:28

I always thought it was normal to go nappy free when possible to let the air get to their skin.

The idea of pants and pjs and a duvet sounds completely unhygienic frankly.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 12/12/2019 17:28

@Beautifulstranger101
Who says I dont go commando during the day?! I often do.
I wasn't actually suggesting that you didn't, but tbf, that's rather more information than I or the rest of the internet needs to know.

I dont understand people getting mad about this- do what you bloody well want. Some people (including me) feel claustrophobic with pants on underneath PJs. It doesnt make me "nasty" or "wrong", its personal preference.
Of course, it's absolutely everyone's personal preference. I have not suggested otherwise, nor suggested that anyone is nasty or wrong. I was merely stating a fact (you'll get more air to your bits moving around than you will whilst sleeping under a duvet). The thread is quite lighthearted imo, but I'm sorry if it's made you feel got at. But I imagine some of those being told pants in bed are a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus might be feeling got at as well.

UndertheCedartree · 12/12/2019 17:29

I think it's just personal preference but we all wear pants under pjs. And I've very rarely had thrush - don't cotton pants allow your genitals to breathe? Or is it because they are tighter than pjs?

HuntingCuns · 12/12/2019 17:31

I'm aghast at there being people who wear pants in bed (unless they use sanitary towels for periods, obvs).

I'm also a bit aghast at the number of people who wear pyjamas. Just why?? They're horrible.

Nighties and no pants all the way, here. The foof needs air. Nightshirts for the males (and no pants at all, ever).

If sharing a bed with non-resident DP, no clothes at all.

I also let my DC spend time nappy-less when they were immobile babies, as I never liked the idea of their skin being permanently encased.

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 12/12/2019 17:32

Saying wearing pants under pjs causes thrush is one of those (mumsnet) old wives tales. Wear what you want to be comfortable, but don’t talk rubbish. Unless you can produce the evidence to back up your claim.

dontcallmeduck · 12/12/2019 17:35

@HuntingCuns Nighties are incredibly annoying as they always ride up so I’m sleeping on a bump around my waste. PJ’s all the way for me.

HuntingCuns · 12/12/2019 17:37

No, no, no, duck. You're doing nighties all wrong. Grin

Bebby80 · 12/12/2019 17:38

We do before before a bedtime bath so it’s bath, no pants and fresh pj’s every night.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 12/12/2019 17:39

Fresh daily pjs sounds like a ridiculous amount of laundry.

I'm pants and pjs and sometimes just pjs. I wear my pjs for a few days. I dont tend to sweat too much at night.

siacolouredthesmallone · 12/12/2019 17:40

I never expected this to be such a lovely, affirming thread Grin

Call me weirdo for finding happiness in strange things....but on one of the most divisive days in history, I just have a vision of an army of strong women attired in bed-wear, breezes circulating where required; protective germ-shields in other cases, but marching forward for a good night's sleep, ready to meet whatever tomorrow's results throw up Grin.

Call me whimsical, and I should add I'm listening to Belle & Sebastian as a backdrop to all this while doing me dusting, but I love the idea of an Army of Nightwear going forward today of all days... Flowers Wine Brew Cake Xmas Grin

DoTheNextRightThing · 12/12/2019 17:41

Oh wow I could never wear PJs without pants Shock I mean... not to give TMI but I don't want my pyjama bottoms getting discharge on them. That's what pants are for.

siacolouredthesmallone · 12/12/2019 17:42

I mean....jeeeeezo....however we vote, however rich and poor we are....we all need to fucking Sleep In Our Nightwear, with our Bits the way we like 'em, innit Grin

DoTheNextRightThing · 12/12/2019 17:43

@museumum yes I would take 14 pairs of pants.
