Naked in a family changing room

Before I complain can i just check Im in the right?

We joined a gym that has a 3 changing rooms. Male/ female / family. I have older boys and little girl so we use the family room that had lovely big cubicles for changing.

We went for a swim this afternoon and a women was dressing after her shower next to the the lockers with her toddler. My 12 yr son and husband were both with Me and felt uncomfortable. I think I was so shocked I didn't say anything and now wish I had as she could of used the massive female changing room that is for women and children under 7.

Should I of said something or is this normal ?

So either your family all changed together so your son saw you naked or you took up two cubicles between you and possibly left none open for the woman.

TheSandman · 09/12/2019 11:05

If a man was naked in there police would be called

And would do what?

And if a woman was naked in there they wouldn't?

siacolouredthesmallone · 09/12/2019 11:08

I wouldn't get naked in an area where there were likely to be men and older boys - sorry if that makes me 'uptight'

It's just a matter of opinion I guess. In my opinion it does "make (you) uptight". I wouldn't have a problem subtly changing in front of men and women in a changing room scenario. I expect you think that "makes me " (insert as you feel appropriate) and that is your opinion.

But I'm not "sorry" and you needn't be either Xmas Grin Crown Wink

IfNot · 09/12/2019 11:09

I'm amazed everybody seems to have the choice of mixed/family and mens/women's. We honestly don't (council pool) EVERYONE has to used the mixed area and wait for a cubicle . There are always cleaners of both sexes in there too. There NO WAY that any woman would stand around naked, and nowhere else for great big 12 year old boys to change. Hmm

siacolouredthesmallone · 09/12/2019 11:10

If a man was naked in there police would be called The UNISEX CHANGING ROOM POLICE!!!!! Jeeeezo....is that for real?!?! Confused

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 09/12/2019 11:11

Either don't look/ogle/glare, or get yourself instead into a cubicle, and tell your husband and son to get changed in the male changing rooms.

How does being in a cubicle stop you from seeing a naked woman who has stripped off next to the lockers? Unless you planned on staying in the cubicle you would say naked woman when you walked to the locker wouldn't you?

The problem wasn't with op, her children or husband - they were where they were meant to be and doing what they were meant to be doing.

The problem with the woman who was naked in a unisex communal area.

Bluerussian · 09/12/2019 11:11

You certainly shouldn't of said anything Wink. However I'm appalled at a woman being naked in a changing room, in a million years I wouldn't do that even in an all female changing room and don't know anyone who would - you just don't. Even people who are blase about nakedness have some consideration for others.

I have to say I don't know why your husband didn't go to the male changing room with sons.

Doggodogington · 09/12/2019 11:18

Another who doesn’t understand why you are getting changed “as a family”. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard today! 😂

Disfordarkchocolate · 09/12/2019 11:21

I can't understand all the kerfuffle, there is always the chance you will see something naked in a changing room. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes accidentally. As it's a mixed area if the male members of your family don't want to risk seeing any naked women then they need to use a cubical in the men's changing area.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 09/12/2019 11:22

*If a man was naked in there police would be called

And if a woman was naked in there they wouldn't?*

There are MN threads every week about men in mixed changing rooms. There was one recently where a man was changing naked in a cubicle with the door open.
Yes, people would report him to the staff.
There are MN threads every day about women not happy to share spaces with men.
Almost universal agreement is that men shouldn't be in changing or toilet spaces with women.
Yet this thread is different, it seems like I'm reading MN in a parallel universe.

LolaSmiles · 09/12/2019 11:22

The problem with the woman who was naked in a unisex communal area.
It's unisex changing.
Whilst people have different levels of personal preference regarding changing, people changing in unisex changing is reasonable.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 09/12/2019 11:23

WTF is it with MN and changing room threads lately, it's like it's become an obsession lol
What with the batshit one where the OP thought it perfectly normal to hang out in the men's changing room and then be all Shock at a man daring to change and showing his hairy botty, and now this Grin

nocluewhattodoo · 09/12/2019 11:30

In changing rooms, regardless if they are men's, women's or family rooms, there will probably be nudity. If you can't cope, then don't go to places where you know people take their clothes off. Naked bodies are not offensive, especially not in this scenario.

LolaSmiles · 09/12/2019 11:33

wotcha
It's fast becoming the new toilet threads. We've not had a "reasons it's ok to use a disabled toilet" thread in a while. Maybe changing room ones are the trend of the moment..

Bluntness100 · 09/12/2019 11:35

I'm curious as to what you wish you'd said? If there are no rules she's entitled to be naked in this area. What would you exactly say to her? And what do you feel would have been her reaction to that? Other than fuck off to thr unisex changing rooms if you don't like it?

Thefaceofboe · 09/12/2019 11:41

just have a giggle and get over it OP. I’m sure your son wasn’t traumatised

gothefcktosleep · 09/12/2019 11:47

Your husband was uncomfortable seeing a naked woman? Crown Grin hilarious.

We make such a big deal out of nudity in this country, it’s a bit ridiculous really. Your son seeing a naked woman who is trying to get herself and her small toddler dressed after swimming seems like the most normal innocent thing in the world. It’s a step in the right direction for him not to go running in the opposite direction if he sees someone breastfeeding their baby. This pearl clutching at innocent stuff is the thing of yesteryear. She wasn’t cavorting naked was she, just getting changed. I think it’s okay for her to have done that.

Damntheman · 09/12/2019 11:47

Getting changed in a changing room is so normal. And in a unisex changing room it's very normal to have male, female, and everything in between bodies naked getting changed. it's not that dramatic. It was a changing room.

firesong · 09/12/2019 11:48

Nudity in a changing room. That's fine isn't it?

Pulpfiction1 · 09/12/2019 11:54

My guess is the family changing room is 90% of the time just women and kids and so she has got used to just changing in there.

She probably wasn't expecting a pre teen and adult man in there but couldn't be bothered to change room or change her behaviour.

Not really a big deal. Your dh and ds could have just gone in the mens if it was such an issue for them. Unisex means you could see men or women's bits.

Vulpine · 09/12/2019 12:01

But adult men are allowed in there?! Fathers of young kids and all that

happycamper11 · 09/12/2019 12:06

I would take my toddler dc to the family change area as the woman did because there is more space to dress a child but surely a adult man and 12 year old boy can use the mens. I'd expect to see body parts in communal change areas

Booboostwo · 09/12/2019 12:07

It's a unisex, family changing room. She was changing in it with her toddler. If your husband and DS felt uncomfortable it is up to them to move to a changing room that is more suitable to them, especially seeing as there is every choice under the sun in this pool.

BeanTownNancy · 09/12/2019 12:12

A few decades ago I made an amazing discovery which might be of use to a few people here!

Did you know that you can actually swivel your eyes within your head and even, get this, turn your WHOLE HEAD and simply not look at something you don't want to see.

I know, I was as shocked as you are.

JinglingHellsBells · 09/12/2019 12:15

People are not reading properly.

Yes, in theory it is a MIXED changing room - ie for families so that could be mum, dad and boys and girls.

BUT it is also a changing room with cubicles and this naked woman was standing by the lockers. So she wasn't in a changing room.

I think the onus was on her to show more consideration because although it is a changing facility for families, she could be seen by fathers so it does sound as if she was indiscreet.

On the other hand, I still stand by my first posts that a 12 yr old pubescent boy should change in the men's, and that there is no need at all for the family to 'meet' in the changing room after dad's been to his class. It's clearly a sports centre, so there must be other areas where families meet.
