Naked in a family changing room

Before I complain can i just check Im in the right?

We joined a gym that has a 3 changing rooms. Male/ female / family. I have older boys and little girl so we use the family room that had lovely big cubicles for changing.

We went for a swim this afternoon and a women was dressing after her shower next to the the lockers with her toddler. My 12 yr son and husband were both with Me and felt uncomfortable. I think I was so shocked I didn't say anything and now wish I had as she could of used the massive female changing room that is for women and children under 7.

Should I of said something or is this normal ?

I'm amazed by these responses, and look forward to the next thread about a naked man in the family changing room, where I can tell the distraught OP that they are just a prude, should have looked away, shouldn't go in there, etc.

If you don't want to see naked people of the opposite sex, don't go in a mixed changing room.

Cremebrule · 09/12/2019 09:52

To be honest, I think you’ve been stretching the appropriate age for using family changing. Family chancing is amazing for us as we’ve got a 3 year old and a baby. We need the space and extra hands. I can’t imagine still using family changing with a 12 year old. I used to go swimming with my dad every Sunday and remember changing on my own from a young age.

Also.. it pisses me off no end when families with older children save the family cubicles during swimming lessons by leaving their stuff in them. I’ve had times when I’ve not been able to access the baby change because families with 10-12 year olds have been in there. It’s not really necessary for most children that age but it’s hard work for me helping the 3 yo in a small cubicle with a baby.

formyownbenefit · 09/12/2019 09:53

Think it's

formyownbenefit · 09/12/2019 09:54

Posted too soon. Think it's stranger that your secondary school aged son can't change alone

GrumpyHoonMain · 09/12/2019 09:55

@ Cremebrule - agreed. It’s the same level of inconsiderate as parents of school aged kids without sen / sn using parent and child parking. I think companies need more consistent rules about how to define ‘child’ in various contexts. All the gyms I have been to define it as someone under 8. I would certainly complain if I saw a family with non-disabled teenagers wondering around a family changing room designed for much younger kids - the parents might not always be naked in public, but the younger kids might.

LunasOrchid · 09/12/2019 10:00

You dont need to be openly naked in a changing area just wait for a fucking cubicle FFS 🤦🏼‍♀️

Aridane · 09/12/2019 10:07

I doubt said woman was doing cartwheels naked and shaving her vulva. Like fuck would I be shivering wet waiting for a changing room if I could quickly towel try and get changed.

Aridane · 09/12/2019 10:08

[cubicle, not changing room]

siacolouredthesmallone · 09/12/2019 10:11

OP, was she subtly exposing her sinful human flesh for just a nanosecond in between whipping off her swimmie top, popping on her bra, genuflecting and saying a "Hail Mary"?? Or was she gleefully jumping around, shooglying it all about, and singing, Oh I'm the king of the swingers! The jungle VIP!! in your traumatized mancub's face?* Grin

Seriously. Don't be so silly. You have far too much time on your hands!
Grin

*If it was the latter, I'd kiss her and beg her to be my friend....

Vulpine · 09/12/2019 10:11

I wouldn't dream of getting naked in a mixed changing room.

Fozzleyplum · 09/12/2019 10:17

She WBU for being naked in the communal area of a mixed changing room. YWBU for using a family cubicle unnecessarily, making it unavailable to anyone who might have a young child of the opposite sex to themself. Your DH and DS should have used the male changing room, and you and DD should have used the female.

Sleepyblueocean · 09/12/2019 10:17

In this situation we would have needed to use the family changing room because ds age 14 needs 2:1 support for changing. I suspect there would have been complaints if we had changed him outside of a cubicle so the same rule should apply for adult females as well.

ebenezerscroogedmeover · 09/12/2019 10:20

The woman was getting ready after swimming with her toddler... I don't see the issue at all.

Why complain about her?
She could have been having a hard time with her toddler and just trying to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Perhaps and instead of judging and thinking about complaining just simply move on and get on with your day.

A 12 year old in with his mum and dad I think is a bit odd.

Sleepyblueocean · 09/12/2019 10:24

It's sometimes necessary.

LakieLady · 09/12/2019 10:28

When did we all get so uptight about naked bodies?

I can't see a problem, personally. Naked in a changing room seems normal to me.

Sirzy · 09/12/2019 10:41

Why would there be complaints sleepy? As long as your DS is happy and is in the right changing room - which the family one is - then why would him getting changed be an issue?

Sweettruelies · 09/12/2019 10:45

I’d be very pissed off if there were no family cubicles available for me, my baby and preschooler and a blooming 12 year old was in one with his parents!

Sweettruelies · 09/12/2019 10:46

Assuming 12 year old is nt of course (awaits drip feed)

Vulpine · 09/12/2019 10:49

I wouldn't get naked in an area where there were likely to be men and older boys - sorry if that makes me 'uptight'

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/12/2019 10:50

If there are 3 changing rooms and it is a gym not a pool then there are going to be a limited number of cubicles. The lady wasnt wandering around she was by the lockers whee presumably her clothes were. You do not need and should not need 12 year olds with no additional needs in a family changing room.

angieloumc · 09/12/2019 10:54

As a pp said, the woman and her DC area family too. I don't see that you being with your husband trumps that. In fact, no reason why you can't go in separate changing rooms.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 09/12/2019 10:59

If you don't want to see naked people of the opposite sex, don't go in a mixed changing room.

Our local leisure centre has mixed changing.
If a man was naked in there police would be called.

LolaSmiles · 09/12/2019 11:01

OP, was she subtly exposing her sinful human flesh for just a nanosecond in between whipping off her swimmie top, popping on her bra, genuflecting and saying a "Hail Mary"?? That's made me laugh

OP I also think you're stretching using family changing to be honest. Personally I can't get bothered by people getting changed in a changing area, and if it's unisex then fine.
I do however understand why your son felt uncomfortable and that's probably a sign he is more than ready to be using the men's changing area.

TheSandman · 09/12/2019 11:03

Maybe she comes from a society / country where nudity in such circumstances is not seen as a horrorshow but as normal.

PettyContractor · 09/12/2019 11:03

Lots of people on this thread have a problem with their reading comprehension. The woman wasn't naked in an area designated for family changing. She was naked in a public space near to, but not in, the cubicles designed for that purpose. This is all clear in the OP.
