To ask DD2 to change her cat’s name

I’m posting this on behalf of my DD who is too mortified. She’s expecting her own DC (my DGC) and had picked out a name that only a few of us knew. Let’s say it’s “Honey” (it’s not but just for example)

DD2 out of the blue has got a kitten and has named it Honey, of course.. Confused DD1 is mortified and has asked me to see if I can get DD2 to change the name of the kitten! AIBU to try to do this?

Yes I’ve seen all the “two names in the same family” threads and have no problem with it when it’s people but having the same name as an animal seems potentially offensive?

OP posts:

I hate the term "sloppy seconds".

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 09/12/2019 20:37

I've probably killed the thread now Blush but that's maybe not such a bad thing Grin

VanyaHargreeves · 09/12/2019 20:39

Yes, all I could think of was that recent thread when OP got her arse handed to her over it. @WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

Maybe dd2 already has a child and that's why she assumed he was infertile. That would be some dripfeed.

MiddleClassProblem · 10/12/2019 09:06

And that child is with his brother

SVRT19674 · 10/12/2019 10:24

Indiana Jones was named after his dad's pet dog Indiana. If I were dd1 i would just choose another name for kitten. Is the name Mia?

ActualHornist · 10/12/2019 10:38

Indiana Jones was names after his father - Indiana was a nickname after the dog!

SouthwarkSkaters · 10/12/2019 11:14

^ yep, and IIRC his dad was less than impressed that he chose to go by it!

CatkinToadflax · 10/12/2019 13:32

I know someone with a dog called Indiana Bones.... misses point of thread

SnowyRacoon · 10/12/2019 13:55

Poor DD2, what a betrayal from those she loved and thought loved her.

happycamper11 · 10/12/2019 14:42

My DSis has named her dog a name that I had as my second choice for both current dc. I'm unlikely to have a 3rd child but if I did and it was a girl. I'd still probably use it as I still love the name. A friend of DM when we were kids had a dog called Rosie and went on to name her first dd Rosemary. I don't think there's any shame in having a pet with the same name. (Dd2's name seems to be a current common dog name, she's always delighted when she hears of one)

When I was a teenager, my parents adopted two cats from a relative who was moving abroad. One had my name (common girls name), the other was called Harry - same as my big brothers new born baby. ‘How funny’ we said, and that was it. No renaming was even suggested. I soon learned that if my name was being screamed, and the words bird, or mouse were also mentioned, it probably wasn’t anything to do with me.

kayfarr · 10/12/2019 16:49

My DGD was named Poppy and when she was eight we adopted a dog from Dogs Trust, also called Poppy!!
We tried to get the dog to answer to another name but it didn’t work so now we have two Poppy’s in the family and if they are together we just call one ‘Poppydog’ !!!

Lizzie0869 · 10/12/2019 17:30

Exactly, it hardly matters what name a kitten is given. It's minor compared to the fact that DD1 is having a baby with DD2's former partner, who she was previously TTC with.

hippopootamus · 10/12/2019 18:47

Why would it be offensive to have the same name as an animal? Animals are lovely!

My dog has the same name as a close family member and he (the human) is happy with it. He always insists proudly that the dog is named after him (although it’s not, I just like the name!).

SunshineCake · 12/12/2019 10:36

Spectacularly missing the point there, @hippopootamus Hmm.
