To ask DD2 to change her cat’s name

I’m posting this on behalf of my DD who is too mortified. She’s expecting her own DC (my DGC) and had picked out a name that only a few of us knew. Let’s say it’s “Honey” (it’s not but just for example)

DD2 out of the blue has got a kitten and has named it Honey, of course.. Confused DD1 is mortified and has asked me to see if I can get DD2 to change the name of the kitten! AIBU to try to do this?

Yes I’ve seen all the “two names in the same family” threads and have no problem with it when it’s people but having the same name as an animal seems potentially offensive?

OP posts:

" DD1’s husband (and father of the child) used to be DD2’s ex"

God grief!

Perhaps the youngest has found out the name & done it on purpose then!

PristineCondition · 07/12/2019 17:44

Right well...on that bombshell, yabu

diddl · 07/12/2019 17:45

So you're not going to ask are you & neither should your eldest.

She can still use the name or not as she chooses.

BallacheForLife · 07/12/2019 17:47

Bloody hell OP that's all very snug isn't it?!
I may be going against the grain but I'd let DD2 call the kitten whatever the hell she likes and DD1 can lump it. Imagine having a baby with your sisters ex 🤢

JJTWhite · 07/12/2019 17:47

Do you think dd2 and ex (dd1 husband) talked about names they may like if they had kids and well the name stuck and she still likes the name 😶

gamerwidow · 07/12/2019 17:47

DD1 should just speak to DD2 and explain the situation. Don't be surprised if DD2 doesn't want to change it given the circumstances.
It's not like they are close, if they were DD1 wouldn't have done this only parents can know the name drama.

Stupiddriver1 · 07/12/2019 17:47

Not surprised their relationship is awkward.

How unusual is the name?

I used to live with a guy who had a dog with the same name as me. I obviously couldn’t ask him to rename the dog as dog had had the name for years but I remember one awkward conversation at his mother’s when he told her how bloody naughty X had been chasing the cows and everyone turned to glare at me!

Lovemusic33 · 07/12/2019 17:48

They obviously have the same taste in names.... and men 🤔

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/12/2019 17:48

He’s collected the set then?.

I hope you haven’t got any other daughters.

Lulualla · 07/12/2019 17:49

Used to be her ex? I assume he still is her ex and they arent living in a menage-a-trois.

Who marries their sister's ex? Strange morals in that one.

She didn't know the name. She's called her cat a name she likes. That's it. You cant ask her to change it.

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 07/12/2019 17:49

Another colleague called her dog "Daisy" until she had a daughter, and changed the dog's name

What?

That's just stupid.

Pick another name for your kid - either that or don't give your pet a name you love so much you will want it for your child.

Must have been bloody confusing for the dog.

Dolorabelle · 07/12/2019 17:49

Offensive? I don’t get it.

Apart from anything else they’ll be in two different households and anyway, cats don’t live as long as humans do.

gamerwidow · 07/12/2019 17:49

Also unless DD2 went out with this man when she was about 13 for a week and then DD married him years later or similar then the whole set up is a reciepe for disaster. I don't think you can ever expect these siblings to be on good terms.

Panpastels · 07/12/2019 17:49

@LeftieLovegood agreed!!

Butchyrestingface · 07/12/2019 17:50

relationship is a little awkward though as DD1’s husband (and father of the child) used to be DD2’s ex

Good. God.

fwiw my daughter has the same name as my mum's best friend's dog. We've survived.

DamsonOnThisDress · 07/12/2019 17:51

In that case maybe let it go. It really doesn't matter.

We keep our DD going because the name we'd always planned to give her - our firstborn - was in fact given to a Labrador. Who came along before her.

To add insult to her injury our neighbours chose our DS's name for their son.

When they were expecting their girl we all joked wouldn't it be funny if they gave the baby DD's name.

Dd had everything crossed but alas they did not. They gave her our dog's name. Grin

We still laugh at her getting screwed over by dogs.

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 07/12/2019 17:51

I remember one awkward conversation at his mother’s when he told her how bloody naughty X had been chasing the cows and everyone turned to glare at me!

At least you weren't worrying sheep, I suppose.driver.

You can get shot for that.

diddl · 07/12/2019 17:51

Somehow if anything is said, I can imagine the reply being "fuck off".

Well I'm being nosy.

I'm guessing if they don't get on then the youngest isn't best pleased about her sister marrying her ex?

Did she go to the wedding?Blush

Winterdaysarehere · 07/12/2019 17:52

Pussy Galore is a lovely name for a dc imo!!
Yabu. The dc will be thrilled imo I expect!

NearlyOutedMyself · 07/12/2019 17:52

Sounds like a plotline from a soap. I'd keep out of it if I were you.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 07/12/2019 17:52

Nice bait OP Grin

Usingmyindoorvoice · 07/12/2019 17:53

One of my dds has the same name as my mother’s dead dog. I didn’t even think about the connection at the time as it is a great name.
I think the dog had died before she came along. Confused

rosegoldivy · 07/12/2019 17:53

@flufflycloudland77 that made me LOL

But yeah, if any other DDs lock em up. This guys in a roll

Rainandclouds · 07/12/2019 17:53

My daughter has the same name as my sisters cat (cat was there first) I just forgot about the cat when trying to name my daughter. I think my sister was a bit bothered but it’s pretty easy to figure out who is who and the cat is such a wimp it would never be in the same room as my child (we also have a cat, she is called whiskers and loves my daughter) My son also shares a name with both another cat and a dog but no one seems traumatised by it. All our pets have non human names (well unless they have very unusual names!)
