To think the Tesco's cashier was out of order?

Iv just been shopping with DS 2yo and DD 9months, both sat in the trolly. I went to go pay, the cashier asked how many bags I'd like, I told him how many. Both kids where been quiet, minding their own business in the trolly. The cashier looks at them and turns to me and says "they don't look like brothers at all"...
Fair enough getting the gender wrong, shes not got alot of hair & was in a brown coat.
But to make me feel abit shit that they don't look alike.
Both kids have the same dad. Just my son is bright blonde hair blue eyes and the double of his dad and DD is mousy brown hair and dark eyes, like me.
Aibu to think this comment was out of line? It's bothering me 😕

My brother was seriously blonde as a child, almost looked bald because his hair was so light, I had black hair - we've met in the middle and both have moist blonde hair

Kids change, don't sweat it - cashier was making small talk

bridgetreilly · 05/12/2019 17:46

Oh, grow up.

MrsExpo · 05/12/2019 17:56

YABU. My DH is fair and blue eyed like his father, and his brother is dark haired and brown eyed like their mother. It’s called genetics!! You’re being over sensitive IMO.

CherryPavlova · 05/12/2019 18:00

Looking for a reason to be offended? Just silly. It’s inane chit chat

BigFatGoalie · 05/12/2019 18:01

And the OP has disappeared... funny that! Grin

andpancakesforbreakfast · 05/12/2019 18:07

well, some posters are offended when someone holds a door for them, so I've seen worst on here Grin

BestOption · 05/12/2019 18:10

You need to look at your reaction to a totally inoffensive comment & work out why you felt offended by it.

The only thing I can think of is they you were offended that he might have thought your kids had different fathers. Now you need to ask yourself why that would offend you?! You must be judging young mums with kids who have different fathers or you wouldn’t be offended. That makes your judging offensive, not his comment.

Isithometimeyet0987 · 05/12/2019 18:10

I look nothing like my brother, people are always surprised when we say we’re brother and sister honestly I’ve never been offended by this and can’t understand why you are tbh.

CalamityJune · 05/12/2019 18:14

Innocuous comment that you have read far too much into, i'm afraid.

londonrach · 05/12/2019 18:16

Yabu. Its making conversation. Why you bothered? The fact you worried you need to ask youself why?

littleduckeggblue · 05/12/2019 18:18

Oh sweetheart, this was such a terrible thing to happen. HmmThanks

Soontobe60 · 05/12/2019 18:19

A Tesco checkout operator said to me 'it must be hard having a baby at your age' when I took my then 4 month old grandson in 🤣🤣🤣

Rubyupbeat · 05/12/2019 18:19

Hate to think what would happen if someone really insulted you?
My cousin has twins, one is dark asian, the other is white with blonde hair, and there is no likeness in their features either, imagine what people say when they are told they are twins? My cousin lives peoples reactions!

Rubyupbeat · 05/12/2019 18:19

Loves

MostTacticalNameChange · 05/12/2019 18:23

She's offended because she feels he may have implied they have different fathers which implies she is either unable to keep a man or a gigantic slag. Both clearly the worst things a woman can be Hmm

inwood · 05/12/2019 18:28

My sister and I are adopted and got told we looked alike or like adoptive m and d all the time. We didn't and don't. People just say stuff to make conversation.

HappyHarlot · 05/12/2019 18:30

OP YABVU

Dollymixture22 · 05/12/2019 18:34

My sister and I look nothing alike. People say this all the time. It has never once upset anyone.

poltergust · 05/12/2019 18:40

I think people just make conversation about it. I get old all the time my daughter looks completely like me and nothing like her dad. That could be slightly upsetting to him I guess (it's not) but they're literally just passing time and pointing out the obvious.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it, unless there's some Jeremy Kyle drip feed about to happen

MrsWhites · 05/12/2019 18:41

I can’t understand why you are offended at all! Not all siblings look alike, I don’t look a thing like my sister.

I can understand people being offended by your insinuation that having children by different fathers is something to be ashamed of though!

Glitteryone · 05/12/2019 18:46

Big over reaction, she was only trying to make conversation... Purely an observation and by your admission in the OP a correct observation.

Seriously people get so offended these days about nothing!

AlrightyyThen · 05/12/2019 18:49

YANBU there was just no need to say it at all. You should’ve just stared her out or said “she’s a girl” which would’ve made her feel awkward enough to shut up.

I get the opposite, my two have different dads but look very similar (they look like me) and we always get “oh I can’t believe they look so alike! Considering... you know” Confused

andpancakesforbreakfast · 05/12/2019 18:58

if you get that from a random Tesco cashier, you are obviously over-sharing.

MistyCloud · 05/12/2019 18:59

@AlrightyyThen

YANBU there was no need to say it at all.

I agree!

Wow, what a bloody cheek! Hmm

Vanhi · 05/12/2019 19:01

It's only really offensive if they ask if you brought the right ones home from hospital.
