to wear a onesie on a long haul flight?

I'm frightened of flying and taking my first ever long haul flight on Saturday! 17hrs straight to Perth. I am packing everything I can think of to make my journey comfortable but am wondering if IABU to wear a onesie on the plane? I have scoliosis so I wriggle into weird positions a lot which makes jeans feel uncomfortable sitting for long periods...yet I find in leggings I get incredibly cold on planes. My late mum bought me a super soft spotty onesie...WIBU to wear it over leggings and a singlet once we board or will I look insane?!

I get really hot on long haul flights, but that might be menopause too.

I take on board baggy slacks and two light loose tops, wearing a singlet t shirt underneath my airport shirt. Once we have reached cruising level, I get changed into my baggy pants and hang up the nice shirt.

It's quite normal for people to do this. Up to you if you want to wear a onesie, I personally wouldn't as it would be an absolute fight to get it on and off in the toilet when you are busting to go. two pieces much easier.

Wear whatever you feel most comfy in. No one will give a damn. Enjoy your trip and especially all the lovely food and drink!

cherish123 · 05/12/2019 20:52

If you are over 18 months of age you simply cannot wear a onesie in public. Just wear a tracksuit or put a rug over your leggings.

PotteryLottery · 05/12/2019 22:23

Mint Velvet leggings are are as warm as denim.

Quietintheranks · 05/12/2019 22:24

Yuk to the loo trip in a onesie, but you could put it on over leggings and t-shirt. Then take it off in your seat before going to the loo really using it like a cosy blanket.

Yes she can, lots of people do, including long haul.

My tips for the Europe/Oz long haul (which I’ve done every year for 48 years, bar maybe 2).

-keep your food bits in a seperate pouch, so you can dump them (what you don’t eat in-flight) before the quarantine check at the end. Yes, even sweets and chewing gum. Those guys aren’t kidding about the rules, and the extra delay of having them search or you declare stuff is a real faff after so many hours of travel.

-bring something that smells nice onboard, preferably a proper essential oil that helps with travel (ginger for tummy upset, lavender for relax). A teeny roll-on, or even a few drops in a hanky. There are lots of bad smells in long-haul, and there’s nowhere to run! Remember no aerosols onboard.

-bring a magazine/book in case all the technology fails. It happens. Also in case your headphones start to hurt your head/ears.

-bring mints that last a while in your mouth. Great for the inevitable bad breath of travel, and to chew/suck as the plane takes off & lands (unblocks your ears).

-don’t befriend your seat mate too early. Be civil but private until you get the measure of them. Start as you mean to continue. If you score a Chatty Cathy, it can get really awkward by Hour number 12.

-watch the fizzy drinks and farty foods. Gas can be pretty uncomfortable when you’re stuck folded like a pretzel for a day and a half!

-ziplock (clear) bags are fab. Section everything in your hand luggage with them. I include a small flannel in one, to have a quick swipe cleanup at the halfway mark. Then seal it away until you get a chance to wash it properly. Fresh tee & knickers in another one.

-speaking of knickers, I always wear tampons inflight. Something about plane travel increases the...ahem... action in that area (whether you’re on your period or not). Makes me feel fresher and avoids accidents.

-don’t forget a couple of pens. There’s a fair bit of paperwork to fill out along the way!

-write out the contact info for where you need to go, or who is picking you up at the other end. On paper. Remember to write phone numbers as they would need to be without the international code. You can’t always control how your tech will travel. Your brain may not be at full strength reminding you to charge your device, or the charging might happen at unexpected (low) speeds. Also country to country network connection can be troublesome, and airport wifi tricky too. A scrap of paper has saved me multiple times.

-photocopy your itinerary, credit card & passport (photo pages). Carry one copy (in a seperate bag to the real thing). Leave one copy at home with family. Take pics of your check-in luggage just before you close it, and of the outside (with any tags/branding showing). In case anything is lost, delayed or stolen.

-bring medicines (two ‘serves’ of each) in a ziplock. Preferably in its correct packaging, but if not possible, cut the important info out of the box it came in and secure it with a hair tie. Bring pain meds, eye drops, heartburn lozenges, 2 bandaids, mini sanitiser, mini first aid cream. Almost anything else can wait, but being stuck in a plane in pain or discomfort for soooooo long is torture. I always bring a mini spray or tube of tea tree (dilution or cream). It’s a brilliant anti-itch, anti-fungal, anti-bac and generally soothing. Magical stuff. Buy some in Oz as a souvenir!

Happy flights, hope this helps!

Ironically, there's something incredibly juvenile about trying to tell people what they can/can't or should/shouldn't wear in public.

rosesandcashmere · 05/12/2019 23:05

I am cabin crew and you can wear what you want but do consider the limited toilet space. If you have to take half off you'll be cold and it'll be covered in germs. What frightens you about flying? Anything we can help with? :)

NoSauce · 05/12/2019 23:09

I have never seen anyone wearing a onesie let alone an adult.

SydneyMamma · 05/12/2019 23:54

What about comfortable yoga/track pants that are easy to change in and out of and to pack and that don't take up much room? Layers and a pashmina are better to control the temperature and especially for when you arrive in hot Perth.

To each his own, but personally I think wearing onesies in public is a bit naff, unless going to a fancy dress party or similar. As a previous poster has said going to the loo won't be easy. The toilets in economy on aeroplanes are not known for being roomy and the floors are always covered in wee. Yuck, yuck, yuck! Envy (using the envy emoji to indicate revulsion) Grin

As for other tips:

Flight socks are important
Wear shoes/trainers (cheapies from Primark, etc.) when walking around as people traipse the wee from the loo floors all over the plane
Drink loads of water and avoid alcohol
Take a good book to read though I use long haul flights as an opportunity to catch up on the films I haven't had a chance to see
For the times I read I take a little travel/book light to avoid using the plane light and for when I am travelling and want to read at night
Take a good lip balm, eye cream and an (organic) hydrating spray mist
Wear glasses instead of contacts
Move around, stretch and do gentle exercises as much as possible - even in your seat

Here are some good tips and exercises you can do but also check your airline's website for advice:

www.qantas.com/au/en/travel-info/travel-advice/your-health-inflight.html

Whatever you decide to do, all the best for a safe and comfortable flight.

Enjoy your time Down Under! Smile

Oh dear OP! I’m ex cabin crew with scheduled airline so speak from experience. Hygiene in airline loos can depend on whether scheduled or charter flight - dunno why just my experience! - floors can be awash so take heed of everything said about keeping whatever you wear off the floor! Altho it shouldn’t matter, I’ve found that you can be treated as per how you dress. If you can borrow a fleece hoodie, long sleeved t shirt, vest and joggers then pls do. Temp in cabin can be variable. Lip balm, moisturiser, hand cream, own water bottle (empty remember liquid restricted to only 100ml) slipper sox and sliders, toothpaste and brush, face deodorant (pref not spray) and I find an olbas nasal inhaler really useful for bunged up nasal passages on arrival.
Have a thought for those cabin crew in usually tight uniforms, tights and heels doing at least a 12 hour shift!

tallpoppies · 06/12/2019 02:20

Why don’t you take a hot water bottle and ask them to fill it for you? You could say it’s for stomach cramps and I’m sure they would understand! I didn’t know if this would be allowed when I thought of it so googled and found this!

DanaPhoenix · 06/12/2019 03:01

Wow that is genius tallpoppies. I'm book marking this for my next long haul flight.

nakedavengeragain · 06/12/2019 03:01

Some planes are bloody boiling. I've done the 17 hour hop from Dubai to Auckland a million times and layer layer layers are the answer. Cabin temperature fluctuates such a lot that a onesie is likely to boil the head off you when they bang up cabin temperature overnight.

I'm usually in leggings, use the blanket if you get cold. Ask for more if still cold. A vest, then a long sleeve top, a snuggly scarf and snuggly jumpers and socks in my bag. Any can be discarded or put on in a moments notice or used as pillows/bolsters if not needed.

It is the WORST thing to be too hot on a plane.

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 06/12/2019 04:45

Make sure you take moisturiser as I always find I get dry skin on long haul flights. Also bring shorts and t-shirt or similar to change into before you land. It's been 40 degrees in Perth this weekend. Stinking hot if you've come from the British Autumn/winter.

Aridane · 06/12/2019 06:06

i wanted to suggest some nice loose cotton dungarees but apparently op doesnt have time to shop

She flies Tomorrow

Aridane · 06/12/2019 06:14

Airline might not allow it

It's fine in the plane, might not be in the airport itself at security / departure gate (though that tends to be for extreme scanty clothing).

Though I love Dublin Airport's answer to the question of whether onesies can be worn in the airport

While we've seen yet to see them being worn in airports, a passenger called Greg asked Dublin Airport and Aer Lingus if this would be permitted. "Would a onesie be an acceptable travel outfit to wear on a flight? Asking for a friend :)" he joked. Proving that it has a sense of humour, Dublin Airport replied that it didn't foresee a problem with passengers wearing the cosy, but desperately unstylish, nightwear. "We have airport police, but no fashion police," it tweeted. "As long as they empty their pockets at security & remove their belt, sure why not."

Your Amazon link is all very well but the product would arrive after the OP has left for Melbourne Grin

Something that took me a few years to realise when riding pre dawn on 2-3 degree mornings - you can always wear 2 pairs of leggings Grin I always wear two shirts, just didn't think about doubling up pants.

Aridane · 06/12/2019 06:21

Mint Velvet leggings are are as warm as denim

And expensive as fuck

Equimum · 06/12/2019 06:36

Really, on long haul flights, people wear all sorts. It really is about being comfortable, and you’re not going to see any of the people in the flight again.

I know it’s a bit different, but DH regularly flies long haul in business class for work, and typically get given PJs to change into on certain airlines.

PhoneLock · 06/12/2019 11:42

I've just got off a 13 hour flight. As far as I could tell, all passengers were wearing "normal" clothes. I was particularly looking out for onesies too.

Oh, and the toilets were cleaned twice during the flight and stayed pristine.

nononever · 06/12/2019 13:17

I have never in all my years of flying long haul seen anyone wearing a onesie. I will be sure to have a good look on our upcoming long haul flight. I will be onesie spotting Grin
