to wear a onesie on a long haul flight?

I'm frightened of flying and taking my first ever long haul flight on Saturday! 17hrs straight to Perth. I am packing everything I can think of to make my journey comfortable but am wondering if IABU to wear a onesie on the plane? I have scoliosis so I wriggle into weird positions a lot which makes jeans feel uncomfortable sitting for long periods...yet I find in leggings I get incredibly cold on planes. My late mum bought me a super soft spotty onesie...WIBU to wear it over leggings and a singlet once we board or will I look insane?!

I would take the onesie, but wear something passable underneath so I could take the onesie off to go to the loo and also get changed into it (in the first instance) at my seat. Doubt anyone will pay it the slightest bit of attention

lightlypoached · 05/12/2019 07:22

Yes to the onesie. Comfort more important than what people think. Just make sure it's clear of the business end when going to the loo. If you don't normally pee on your clothes I think you'll be ok.

Other tips: yes take a water bottle but make sure it's empty when you go through security. Fill it up on the other side - if no water fountains ask at a cafe.
Take a Power pack for your devices and make it is fully charged otherwise you'll lose power. There should be films etc on the plane anyway but you never know. Decent headphones are vital.
Have a little pillow /neck support.
Wear flight socks (I use the ones I had from surgery a few years back, perfect and the ugliest things youlll ever see Grin)
Have a tiny toothbrush and paste so you can freshen up before landing. Plus a small moisturiser for hands and face.
Get up and go the the galley during the flight and do stretches - particularly ones that involve your feet and toes. You'll look mad as a mad thing (especially in the onesie) but really, who cares?

Have. A fab trip Smile

I would wear leggings and a long sleeved t as you said and a onesie over once in the plane. Or as your queuing to board when you need the loo go to the loo at the back and take it completely off outside the loo and just laugh about it - who cares I would admire you for putting yourself 1st and being cosy

Hey OP Aussie here. Flew to Europe and back in September, our return trip was probably around 30 hours (factoring in stopovers and delays) so 17 hours sounds like bliss.

Wear what makes you feel comfortable, but personally I would forgo the onesie as I would worry about possibly feeling too warm at some point. Light weight comfy clothing you can layer would be your best bet. DH and I wore light weight comfy clothing for beginning of trip switching to under armour sleepwear for the Dubai to Sydney leg. God help us we were matching. Hahaha.

I would also avoid the onesie as sounds quite bulky and would probably take up a fair bit of space in your hand luggage. I would a change of underwear (or two) - it's surprising how fresh it can make you feel and perhaps for sleeping a crop top bra (no underwire) especially if your a twisty restless sleeper.

Also as your travelling winter (cold season) to summer bring some high strength vitamin C and take during the flight. We did this and despite other passengers coughing and sneezing not one of us four got sick. As a bonus it also can help with jet lag.

Most importantly I hope you have an amazing Aussie holiday.

DanaPhoenix · 05/12/2019 07:27

Oops nearly forgot thongs, slides or slip ons. You really, really do not want to be wearing socks or bare feet in the loos.

joystir59 · 05/12/2019 07:27

I've flown long haul more times than I like to think about, and am all for comfort, but the loo floor would totally put me off a onesie. My normally preferred outfit is either my Primark thermal leggings (I love them deeply), hoodie and long line vest underneath or more commonly a jersey maxi skirt, t shirt, and zip hoodie so I can put leggings underneath if I'm cold and can easily get my compression socks on and off. I have thick socks and a pashmina.
Rather than pack a onesie that you are unlikely to use on the rest of the trip, I'd pack the biggest fleece blanket that fits into your hand luggage so you can wrap it round you or roll it up to get more comfortable

Go with this layered comfie approach OP. Gives you options if plane is hot or cold, and its actual clothing rather than night wear.

letsgomaths · 05/12/2019 07:39

I know it's not the answer you're looking for OP, as you know which onesie you'd like to wear, but to all those mentioning the toilet issue...

Has nobody heard of dropseat onesies? Yes, they do exist: they have a flap at the rear to make going to the toilet easier, without having to take the whole thing off. Best to have one which buttons up, rather than one using Velcro. Just don't wear a footed onesie: on a plane, that would be a very bad idea, and that really would make you look like a big baby!

stripeypillowcase · 05/12/2019 07:42

wrt getting changed on the plane.
there is not a lot of space.

JeffreeStar · 05/12/2019 07:48

Marks and Spencer’s do really nice lounge wear that’s a bit more practical. I think you would find a onesie a nightmare as the toilets are tiny.

BlaueLagune · 05/12/2019 07:50

It's always unreasonable to wear a onesie.

And how on earth do you go to the loo?

Aridane · 05/12/2019 07:51

OP is tiny - when I used to be underweight (sighs wistfully), getting changed in a plane toilet (or even at my seat) was no problem

MinervaSaidThat · 05/12/2019 07:53

@JeffreeStar what good is M&S loungewear when OP can’t afford to buy it?

eaglejulesk · 05/12/2019 07:58

Wear your onesie, be comfortable and warm, and think how proud your Mum would be. I'm sure you will manage in the loos. Ignore all the judgemental people here and have a wonderful time in Perth - but be prepared, as it is very hot there at the moment.

Butchyrestingface · 05/12/2019 08:13

You can afford Quantas flights to Australia, a holiday there, a hotel the night before, but can't stretch to a pair of fleece lined leggings at £5 from Primark. Yeah right. Biscuit

Harsh but I was thinking something similar. I hope you have some a lot money for the trip, OP. Otherwise Perth is a long way from Tipperary when you can’t afford £5 on a pair of joggy bottoms.

Are you flying premium economy or first? Not sure how much scope there is for wriggling into weird positions there is in your bog-standard economy seats (I say this as a small person who has done London-Perth Emirates).

Anyway, you definitely won’t be cold in Perth! Make sure you go to Freemantle and Rottnest island to meet the quokkas. 🥰🥰🥰

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 05/12/2019 08:19

Why is it so hard to imagine that the OP has spent their available money on the holiday with nothing left in the budget for a trip to a very distant Primark?

MozzchopsThirty · 05/12/2019 08:20

I always get changed into pjs or joggers on a long haul flight
I take body wipes and then have a good wash before getting back into my clothes about an hour before landing

Knittingnanny · 05/12/2019 08:47

Mozzchops, whilst you are doing that are you aware of the loo queue?
Can you tell it happens to me often?!

WeeMadArthur · 05/12/2019 09:11

I wouldn’t wear a onesie purely because of the faff in those tiny toilets. They are bound to be covered in other people’s pee ( just think how many times a stranger will have peed on/ around the seat on a 17 hour flight). I couldn’t risk the arms brushing against some pee and then having to put it back on! Maybe it’s just my childhood —trauma— memory of using my aunts caravan loo wearing a jumpsuit and one of the arms falling in the loo, I had to borrow my cousins clothes to go home!

sueelleker · 05/12/2019 09:16

You might find it awkward if you need the loo-plane loos are very small, and I don't know about you, but I have to wriggle to get a onesie on and off.

ButtonandPickle19 · 05/12/2019 09:18

Having done that flight multiple times that sounds great. Just be warm and comfortable, you’ll look dreadful no matter what at the other end so best to be happy and cosy on the flight :)

IdblowJonSnow · 05/12/2019 09:20

I wouldn't because I'd feel silly and also need the loo every 5 seconds.
But why not if you're comfiest that way.
V jealous you're going to Perth btw. Love Australia.

janinlondon · 05/12/2019 09:23

You know the toilets are unisex, right?
The floors on all long haul planes squelch.
Your onesie will be damp and nasty.
I've done this flight.
NO.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 05/12/2019 09:26

I'd wear one but then I'm never bothered by other peoples' opinions of me. Just be sure to roll it down and roll or tuck the arms in when visiting the loo.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 05/12/2019 09:27

Or try B&M fleece lined leggings. They are a game changer.

Badabingbadabum · 05/12/2019 09:30

Consider going to the loo.
