So, my job is under threat (again) because of Brexit.

Some jobs were cut last year as a direct result of Brexit, I survived the cut. Now it looks like the whole company might collapse (hopefully not) all because of Brexit, I didn't vote for any of this.

Aibu to be angry and blame the people who did vote for it?

Am I being too optimistic? I’m really hoping that everyone who is against Brexit will vote Labour, both those who votes remain and those who have realised the error of their ways...surely that will be enough people to halt the thing in its tracks for the time being...and eventually reverse it?

CorBlimeyGovenor · 02/12/2019 16:55

@aveline161

But I thought that labour refused to say what their opinion on Brexit is. Only Lib Dems are pro remain.

KenDodd · 02/12/2019 16:56

Tell your mum you've sacrificed her invite for christmas on the altar of brexit.

I wish I could, I can't though, she's going to have to come to me.

OP posts:
mumwon · 02/12/2019 16:57

@aveline161 I really hope your right - but... what I think of Cameron is unprintable

KenDodd · 02/12/2019 16:58

Most people who voted to leave didn't expect the uncertainty that had dragged on and on over this

Oh but how many times have we heard people say 'we know what we voted for', well this mess is it.

OP posts:
MrsMaiselsMuff · 02/12/2019 17:00

Companies are going under because of all the uncertainty. New contracts are being put on hold because no one knows if they'll have the income (from other businesses, from the government, from the end consumer) to fund them.

"Getting Brexit done" won't solve anything, it just pushes the issue further down the seemingly endless road.

My partner's industry is dominated by three suppliers. One has already gone bust, and the second one has made redundancies. The third is not bidding for new contracts, so as the old contracts finish redundancies are inevitable.

Who voted for this?

Torchlightt · 02/12/2019 17:01

I would cancel your mum's visit. Let her face some consequences. Of course, you can't afford a present for her.

FizzyGreenWater · 02/12/2019 17:01

'Sorry Mum, we can't afford to have you for Christmas, but it's because of Brexit so you'll be pleased, nothing bad can come from Brexit remember!'

KenDodd · 02/12/2019 17:01

As for companies holding off investment. Well, why is that? If Brexit is so great why are they worried about investing in the UK? The only reason I can see for businesses not investing is because they don't know if they'll be leaving the country or not. Maybe leave voters can shed some light on any other reasons?

OP posts:
Torchlightt · 02/12/2019 17:03

And you people who don't know where OP works but somehow know she's not losing her job because of Brexit can fuck right off.

I am sick with worry at the thought of the Tories and that prick who leads them getting in...they are so selfish, so greedy that they will think nothing of carrying on with Brexit even KNOW it's a disaster for people. In fact they'll do it gleefully whilst filling their own pockets.

The way you feel about Leave voters is the way I feel about anyone planning to vote for that shower of utter bastards. I hope your job is safe, OP. It's an awful, uncertain time.

ClaudiaWankleman · 02/12/2019 17:05

Brexit hasn’t actually happened yet so I am bemused as to how your employer knows the exact effects of it happening. Sounds to me like the company is doing badly due to poor management but it’s easier to blame Brexit

You don't have to know the exact effects to know that some of the following might be 'good' business management ideas (that would lead to the loss of jobs);

  • Offshoring manufacturing to the Eurozone where you also purchase materials for (no tariffs, no currency risk)
  • Scaling down operations which have higher risk
  • Outsourcing non-core competencies to reduce costs in a time of squeezed capital

And that's before you consider the loss of contracts/ key customers for businesses whose customers are doing the same.

Try again @Fairyliz

KeithPartridge · 02/12/2019 17:05

Sorry....even though they know.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 02/12/2019 17:06

@CorBlimeyGovenor Labour are giving people a vote based on a prenegotiated deal or remain. People will actually know what the implications of leaving are before voting.

A Prime Minister should stay neutral in these matters, he has to carry out the decision whichever way it goes. Most of the cabinet are openly remain, but would carry out the decision of a vote based on two defined options, not pie in the sky.

KenDodd · 02/12/2019 17:07

Question for Leave voters -

If your company was cutting jobs because of Brexit, would you step forward and volunteer for redundancy? If not, why not? After all you would have voted for this so I would hope you'd be happy to accept the consequences.

OP posts:
BlaueLagune · 02/12/2019 17:07

I wish I could, I can't though, she's going to have to come to me

Why? If someone didn't care that their poor decisions were possibly destroying my lifestyle and that of their grandchildren they wouldn't get invited!

Fortunately my mum and partner voted remain, so they can come for Christmas.

Very sorry to hear your predicament, OP and totally get why you are so cross.

Dissimilitude · 02/12/2019 17:08

The fall in the value in the pound has actually made me cheaper, to my employer - company revenue where I am is mostly global (i.e. dollar denominated), whereas the costs are in Sterling.

So, it's not all bad for employment.

PurpleHoodie · 02/12/2019 17:09

Sorry to hear this KenDodd. Hope you get to keep your job.

PurpleHoodie · 02/12/2019 17:09

Yanbu.

KenDodd · 02/12/2019 17:11

So, it's not all bad for employment

Yes, you're right. A friend of mine is in HR specialising in redundancy, he's doing really well. Plus there's the million civil servants dealing with this shit.

OP posts:
preggers506974215 · 02/12/2019 17:15

YANBU OP my DHs company relies on a lot of EU customer. They have already seen a big decline and made cuts. When we actually leave I'm worried it could be my DHs job.
What annoys me is when I hear family member state their reasons for voting leave. It's all nonsense that even if we're true doesn't really affect them in their day to day life. For example a retired family member with a good pension is annoyed because 'they are coming taking our jobs or claiming benefits.' Hmm

Devereux1 · 02/12/2019 17:16

OP, did you vote in the referendum?
Also, what sort of company do you work for/work do you do?

preggers506974215 · 02/12/2019 17:16

Sorry just read that back my grammar is terrible Blush

sellthesizzle · 02/12/2019 17:17

Not a million civil servants but a lot - the same ones who have been having year on year pay cuts for the last 9 years because of 'austerity'
