If so, where will you be going?

I'm chuckling slightly at the idea of people being just able to leave the country and live somewhere else

Why?

I am staggered that people think that you can’t move countries.

Especially if you have the money.

YouJustDoYou · 23/11/2019 11:11

I'm chuckling slightly at the idea of people being just able to leave the country and live somewhere else

Why? Portugal for example is only 5% tax and only a 2 hour commute from London by plane. If it's the top 5% it's piss easy to just move - people already do it (commuting into the capital etc).

sunglasses123 · 23/11/2019 11:12

We were offered a number of years ago something abroad. It would mean me having to give up my job and we wanted to share the kids growing up with grandparents. Now those children have grown up and I have left my middle management role the circumstances are fine for us to move. We have enough money to do so. Why is that so hard for people to understand I wonder?

SinkGirl · 23/11/2019 11:13

The very wealthy will move taking their tax revenue with them. Amazon, Google and the like will either employ very expensive accountants to help them or pass the extra costs onto YOU

They already do this. Where have you been?

Google: declaring £134m U.K. profits, actually estimated to be £1bn
www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/google-tax-36-million-annual-report-corporation-tax-george-osborne-johnmcdonnell-susan-kramer-a7661221.html

Amazon: £220m tax paid on £9.2bn
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/amazon-pays-just-220m-tax-on-british-earnings-of-10-9bn-vv9fwxx52

Apple: trying to fuck over Ireland www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-42641989

The accountant firms they use literally help write tax law: www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/top-accountancy-firms-accused-of-exploiting-tax-laws-they-helped-to-draft-8476028.html

These companies are already doing this now. We are already losing out on billions. As a nation we enable billions in tax dodging www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/uk-corporate-tax-avoidance-havens-justice-network-dodging-a8933661.html

So this isn’t much of a threat is it? They continue to do what they always do as long as any government allows it. It requires a global crackdown, and we would certainly benefit from being in the EU when a European crackdown inevitably comes - as a small number of companies continue to amass a larger share of global wealth, and continue to pay people so poorly while they get richer, economies will break down completely.

And again, these companies didn’t leave when corporation tax was 26% did they?

WrongKindOfFace · 23/11/2019 11:16

Or we could not use Amazon, Google etc. Or we use them but expect to pay more for their services? But the top 5% will absolutely not be paying the additional tax.

Google and Amazon? Hmm, I seen to recall something about them already not being too keen on paying tax in the UK?

I’m not a high earner but I’d be happy to pay a little more in tax if it meant that public services were properly funded.

flopsytheflatcat · 23/11/2019 11:17

No, too busy having a party to celebrate!

Notonthestairs · 23/11/2019 11:20

Aren't Amazon and Google already underpaying their corporation taxes? And obfuscating their figures.

I've said it before but I'll say it again. Voting Conservatives is voting for a crash out of the EU at the end of 2020 - that really will rock businesses and see people moving away.

Corbyn really isn't the worst of our troubles.

And Thanks to Sinkgirl - we have a disabled child and I've spent the last 6 years fighting for provision. When I get my lottery win I'm going to set up a free legal service for carers that just focuses on getting functioning, helpful EHCP's!

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/11/2019 11:22

What do you think the survival rates of uninsured Americans look like compared to the uninsured

Why would that effect us.

Or are you saying because others can’t afford something no one should have it.

Doesn’t that sum up what Labour is all about.

Dp already had a serious pre existing condition when the policy was taken out.

All I know is when he has been in the US and been taken ill and ended up in hospital he has just given details of his policy and he has been admitted straight away.

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/11/2019 11:23

Should say we pay for this policy from his salary.

SinkGirl · 23/11/2019 11:25

Be a lot trickier if Brexit happens though won’t it?

And Portugal? Firstly, you’re lying about a 5% tax rate. See image. “Residents in Portugal for tax purposes are taxed on their worldwide income at progressive rates varying from 14.5% to 48% for 2018.”

Portugal have a socialist government in place right now! You’d flee a left wing government to move to a country with a socialist government? Not a bad choice given that Portugal are doing very well out of their left wing government, but still. They reversed austerity and reduced the deficit through government spending

www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/10/portugal-election-progressives-left-winning/599518/m

So what are you talking about?

Out of interest, you might want to look at this graph - it shows how labour’s spending plan as a percentage of GDP compares to other countries. How shockingly high! 🙄

WrongKindOfFace · 23/11/2019 11:25

How much does his policy cost per year and is there a cap on his cover? Is there a deductible he has to meet before they pay out?

SinkGirl · 23/11/2019 11:26

Oh, and corporation tax in Portugal? 21%

Companies headquartered in Madeira can apply for a special rate: “Companies incorporated and headquartered in Madeira can apply for a International Business Centre (MIBC) license and, granted that they comply with substance requirements, benefit from a corporate tax rate of 5% on the taxable profit derived from economic activities engaged with non-resident entities or entities duly licensed within the MIBC.”

That does not mean Portugal has a tax rate of 5%

SinkGirl · 23/11/2019 11:27

Why would that effect us.

Or are you saying because others can’t afford something no one should have it.

Absolutely bloody disgusting.

Dusty01 · 23/11/2019 11:27

Did you see the Leaders Special of Question Time last night OP?

Worth watching and it might change your mind about leaving if Corbyn gets in. Having said that you may still consider leaving if BJ gets in. I don’t know.

There were no surprises with BJ. He was inarticulate as ever. JC was given proper air time and answered tricky questions with integrity. After listening to him I felt hopeful for our country’s future.

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/11/2019 11:28

Never had anything extra to pay apart from his monthly deductions and he has a few times run up £250,000 bills when his pre existing condition has put him in intensive care.

WrongKindOfFace · 23/11/2019 11:29

But how much does his policy cost?

fedup21 · 23/11/2019 11:30

Portugal for example is only 5% tax

Really??

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/11/2019 11:31

I have never really thought about it but as the company is a large American multinational and he spends a lot of time in the US I think it is the same type of policy that people on his level who work out of the American Head Office have.

MrsWobble3 · 23/11/2019 11:31

Sinkgirl, you have misunderstood me I think. I’m not feeling sorry for people paying 50% tax - just pointing out that total tax revenues might be higher at lower %. And i’d rather maximise the total take.

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/11/2019 11:32

Don’t know the exact figure but do know it is a few hundred per month

notquiteruralbliss · 23/11/2019 11:32

I am more likely to leave if BJs Conservative party get in snd impose a hard Brexit

Notonthestairs · 23/11/2019 11:50

If you are genuinely thinking of moving to the US permanently I would recommend you check out their employment terms very carefully - you won't necessarily get to ship your (EU!) employment terms and protections over with you. 10 days holiday a year and right of immediate termination of contract don't sound all that attractive to me. But i suppose if you are lucky the Democrats will get in.

Am quite amused for the Brexit loving Conservative voters utilising the freedom of movement to move to a socialist EU country. Very patriotic.

YouJustDoYou · 23/11/2019 12:06

That does not mean Portugal has a tax rate of 5%

No your right, i said that wrong. For dh for example though HMRC have calculated his potential tax at 5% if he lived in Portugal but operated out of Heathrow as this would be the percentage of his time spent working on the tarmac before departing. There's no tax to pay in Portugal as they tax based on work in Portugal. Which Is why so many live there but commute to work in the UK. Holland for example is different- they tax based on work done in the person's home country, not just Holland, which is why people who work based in London don't tend tocommue in from Holland

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/11/2019 13:43

10 days holiday a year and right of immediate termination of contract don't sound all that attractive to me

But they don’t just get 10 days holiday. They get 3 more bank holidays than England, personal days etc. It works out as pretty similar.

Dh should know he is in contact with the US daily.

Parker231 · 23/11/2019 13:54

I work for a US company but based in London on a UK employment contract. My colleagues in the US (global consultancy company) get a basic 10 days holiday + public holidays. After five years employment it rises to 14 days. Industry standard. Maternity and employment rights are really poor in the US. Europe has much better employment rights particularly Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
