to think Scotland should be able to decide?

I thought Jeremy absolutely smashed the debate, but both of them seemed to be absolutely resolute that it would be awful to give the Scottish people a independence referendum. I see this all over the media, too.

It would be so so sad if Scotland left the union - half my family are Scottish, and I'd be absolutely gutted.

But surely if the Scottish people want to leave, they should be free to. We don't (or shouldn't) live in a national dictatorship governed by London.

If Scotland were a fed up wife, dreaming of leaving her husband (the rest of the UK), it'd be wrong to force her to stay, right? Even if her husband would be gutted?

Am I missing something?

Maybe you're missing the 'once in a generation' basis of the last referendum, the massive cost, or the nastiness and division of communities and families which has not been forgotten to this day. I can see why some argue that if there is a hard Brexit when Scotland voted to stay, that there should be another referendum...but in the case of a soft or no brexit then just why

Hinchunup · 19/11/2019 23:02

Because democracy is ever changing, but mainly because Scotland never ever votes for a tory government, but requires to live by their policies because the rest of the UK vote for them...

Oldbutstillgotit · 19/11/2019 23:10

We have already decided - 2014 - NO !!

Thethiniceofanewday · 19/11/2019 23:29

‘Once in a generation’ was Alex Salmond’s opinion in an interview, not the law.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 19/11/2019 23:32

Keep voting until you get the result you want, that is democracy.

letsghostdance · 19/11/2019 23:33

I can't bear the idea of living under a tory government for the foreseeable future. We deserve another indyref after the Brexit nightmare. Coming from someone who voted no in the previous referendum.

SilverySurfer · 19/11/2019 23:36

Salmond would go for another referendum like a shot if she thought the Yes vote was a sure thing but since it isn't, it's very 50/50 give or take a few %, she won't push for one. If there was another referendum and No won again, you can say goodbye to having another one for a good few years.

Pinkbonbon · 19/11/2019 23:44

A lot of ppl said no because we were told it was the only way we would be able to remain the the EU. Then, barely a few years later the English vote (not the Scottish one) is one to remove us from the EU.

If Scotland had left, it could have governed its own conditions for re-entry at least.

And if the promised goalposts are changed, the Scottish people have every right to a re-vote.

Your talking about asking pretty much an entire country to be subject to something they didn't vote for. It's unconstitutional. So yeah, as much as we may begrudge the drama again, there 100% should be another vote.

kaldefotter · 19/11/2019 23:51

I agree with Pinkbonbon. I wasn't in favour of going down the route to another referendum.

However, we were told that voting to stay in the UK was the only way to stay in the EU. This was a large part of why I voted no to independence.

However, Brexit is a fundamental change. There are no grounds now to deny another referendum, if the people of Scotland want it.

The more that those in Westminster argue that Scotland isn't entitled to determine its future, the more that rUK looks like an abusive partner keeping us trapped in a marriage we don't want.

As someone who (formerly) voted to stay in the UK, I can assure you this isn't a good look. Please don't underestimate the effect it has on the people of Scotland.

19lottie82 · 19/11/2019 23:53

We had a vote in 2014........ the answer was NO Hmm

kaldefotter · 19/11/2019 23:53

Salmond would go for another referendum like a shot if she thought the Yes vote was a sure thing but since it isn't, it's very 50/50 give or take a few %, she won't push for one.

Do you mean Nicola Sturgeon?

10 years of bloody referendums with nothing else getting done?

The world should be coming together more, not splitting into petty pieces

Sparklybanana · 20/11/2019 00:00

If Scotland never votes Tory then why are there Tory mps up here?
And why does ‘Scotland didn’t vote for ‘ always come up in arguements but when we and only we voted NO that still wasn’t a good enough answer! Clearly doesn’t count voting in Scotland unless it’s what the snp wants.

BouquetOfRoses · 20/11/2019 00:01

We voted in this lifetime to stay in the UK. I did that knowing there would be a referendum on Brexit

Caledoniahasmyheartforever · 20/11/2019 00:18

As a Scottish voter and supporter of Independence here are my reasons for leaving

  1. Every single voter in Scotland could vote against the Tories and we would still end up under a Tory government! There are several million more people living in London alone than the entire population of Scotland! Meaning our votes are useless! Who governs Britain is decided by the much larger population of England! So of course it makes sense to govern ourselves and actually have a say in who runs our country- rather than feeling helpless and waiting to see who England have voted into power...
  1. As above we did not vote for Brexit! Being part of the European Union is beneficial to Scotland! We actually need European workers in our NHS and fishing/ fruit picking and many more industries! we Scots are an inclusive people, we welcome all- no matter your nationality/ sexuality/ region or race if you want to make Scotland your home then you are welcome here! Wanting to be Independent does not mean we hate the English, we just want to be able to know that our democratic right to vote makes an actual difference!
  1. Scotland has fantastic potential to be a successful country in our own right! We have a fantastic export business and we are way ahead of the game with regard to renewable energy technology / industry.

4.I want nuclear weapons the hell out of Scotland! There are children in extreme poverty in the Uk when billions is spent on retaining nuclear weapons which nobody can actually fire without deadly repercussions to the planet.

I could also mention the pathetic lies that the No campaign peddled out, saying an independent Scotland would = leaving the European Union, or actually more ‘Stay in the UK if you want to stay in the European Union’- in fact you could call this gaslighting!

Too many people are narrow minded and think an Independent Scotland means forever an SNP government. When as a nation who actually will influence who governs our country, we can vote in whoever we choose!

Oh and many Scots like myself want to distance ourselves from the embarrassment that is Boris Johnson, Brexit Britain and the Right Wing bigoted politics of Westminster.

But that’s just me....well actually it’s not ...there are a lot more people just like me.

sobeyondthehills · 20/11/2019 00:21

I cant believe Labour is saying we need a second referendum for Brexit and in the same breathe saying Scotland shouldn't get another referendum.

We either respect them both or respect neither

curlykaren · 20/11/2019 00:24

I so desperately want to live in Scotland now you said all that. Please keep the door ajar for me 💟

RJnomore1 · 20/11/2019 00:28

Oh ffs

We decided. Give us a ducking break.im totally done with this shit abd with no one listening to me.

Patroclus · 20/11/2019 01:39

And if you think Brexit is complicted, good luck untangling currencies and armed forces and claiming the oil different groups have claimed. Although I suspect it will be the same as what goes on in the rest of Europe. Scotland will practically abolish its armed forces and rely on its neighbours and debt will be put aside

HirplesWithHaggis · 20/11/2019 01:46

Loads of countries have left Westminster rule, it's nothing new.

Redglitter · 20/11/2019 01:46

We were allowed to decide. We decided we didnt want independence. I hope the SNP are stopped from having another referendum.

RichPetunia · 20/11/2019 03:56

Scotland is an inclusive country: No it's not, it's bigoted.
And it was a once in a lifetime vote. We voted no to independence, so Sturgeon and her ilk need to respect that and move on.

Horehound · 20/11/2019 04:00

Just because they said once in a generation doesn't actually mean it has to be that way. Especially because we are now being taken out of the EU which is what Westminster promised wouldn't happen..if anything, posters churning out the "but, but, but, Alex salmond said it would only happen once" maybe should blame Westminster instead for also changing their mind!

As if no other MP has ever said one thing and not stuck to it Hmm

Horehound · 20/11/2019 04:01

It wasn't once in a lifetime if we choose to have another.
People are so silly!
