to think Scotland should be able to decide?

I thought Jeremy absolutely smashed the debate, but both of them seemed to be absolutely resolute that it would be awful to give the Scottish people a independence referendum. I see this all over the media, too.

It would be so so sad if Scotland left the union - half my family are Scottish, and I'd be absolutely gutted.

But surely if the Scottish people want to leave, they should be free to. We don't (or shouldn't) live in a national dictatorship governed by London.

If Scotland were a fed up wife, dreaming of leaving her husband (the rest of the UK), it'd be wrong to force her to stay, right? Even if her husband would be gutted?

Am I missing something?

Kind of like elections then...

Mayborn · 20/11/2019 13:24

If there's not an appetite for it, why do the SNP still win so many seats

Because they’re a protest vote against the Tories and in this case against Brexit.

This whole election is fraudulent. There are more people voting against something they’re scared of than voting for something they believe in but it will be sold as votes in support of the winning party, not against the losing party.

Vote Labour because you’re worried about Brexit and Corbyn will misappropriate your vote as support for his socialist agenda.

Vote Conservative because you’re worried about not getting Brexit and the conservatives will claim you support all their policies.

Vote SNP because you’re worried about Brexit and the Tories, and Nicola Sturgeon will misappropriate your vote as support for independence.

I and many others are going to be voting against what we perceive as the worst case scenario, not In favour of the best case scenario.

Mayborn · 20/11/2019 13:25

A vote for the SNP is also a protest vote against Westminster for many, which is ridiculous because if independence was taken off the table Scotland could have far greater influence because people would actually want to work with them.

StreetwiseHercules · 20/11/2019 13:34

⬆️ hehehehehe! 😆

CareOfPunts · 20/11/2019 13:38

YANBU

I am a Scot, voted no and remain.

It couldn’t now be clearer that WM and many people in England couldn’t give a fuck about us. I saw a headline yesterday that a majority of people think the break up of the Union is a price worth paying for Brexit. That shows what they think of us.

Things have changed hugely since 2014 and while I am not an avid yesser and hate the SNP Scotland is being shat on by people who couldn’t give a fuck about us. Why should we stay?

Mayborn · 20/11/2019 13:43

a majority of people think the break up of the Union is a price worth paying for Brexit

Link to a properly representative study or it’s a lie.

More likely “a majority of people who think the break up of the union is a price worth paying for Brexit think that the break up of the Union is a price worth paying for Brexit.”

CareOfPunts · 20/11/2019 13:46

@mayborn why have you only copied that part of my post and not the part where I said I just saw a “headline”?

Are you a politician or is this a specific skill you have to twist people’s words to suit yourself?

CareOfPunts · 20/11/2019 13:49

Plus it hasn’t just been a headline I saw on my phone notifications yesterday that’s led me to form my view. I won’t be providing any links, or otherwise explaining myself to the likes of you. As with everyone else, if there’s a referendum, I’ll vote how I see fit and don’t need to justify it to you or anyone.

Mayborn · 20/11/2019 13:52

Are you a politician or is this a specific skill you have to twist people’s words to suit yourself?

You’ve just taken a shitty headline and twisted it to suggest that “a majority of people” “couldn’t give a fuck” about Scotland. I’m calling you out on it for the facts that support that.

Mayborn · 20/11/2019 13:53

to the likes of you - frankly the less people you engage with the better off we will all be if you can’t be bothered to actually understand the headline.

A quick google tells me it was 41% of leave voters. So not much of “a majority of people” really is it.

Mayborn · 20/11/2019 13:54

Next.

LagunaBubbles · 20/11/2019 13:56

Who will they blame for everything if they do get the vote?

The SNP won't necessarily be the party in charge after independence. They will probably split actually when this happens.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/11/2019 14:04

Link to a properly representative study or it’s a lie.

2018 Panelbase poll of people living in England
"If part of the price of Brexit was Scotland leaving the UK, do you think that would be a price worth paying?

No 35%

Patroclus · 20/11/2019 14:08

People have seen the realities of nationalist policies. It will be the same in Northern Ireland. The day after independence when you've done celebrating- nationalism wont pay the bills.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 20/11/2019 14:13

nationalism wont pay the bills

Of course not. It is fortunate that Scotland has so many assets. Tourism, food & drink, renewables....

Patroclus · 20/11/2019 14:49

Which I assume they already have access to.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 20/11/2019 14:54

Scotland already decided to stay. However, if brexit were to happen I think that would be sufficient justification for another vote.

LagunaBubbles · 20/11/2019 14:55

Which I assume they already have access to

Do you mean the assets mentioned by Itsallgoingtobefine? Because if so then no Scotland doesn't have access to all the money from its assets as it goes to Westminster first, before Scottish Government gets its money.

peasando · 20/11/2019 15:00

The SNP won't necessarily be the party in charge after independence. They will probably split actually when this happens.*

This is a big part of the problem. A one policy party, whose only goal is to split the union, and no clue what will happen thereafter, or how the transition will be managed, let alone how (or by whom) the country will be run once it's independent.

Reminiscent of Mr Cameron doing a runner after the Brexit vote was in...

Patroclus · 20/11/2019 15:00

And of couurse, nobody wll have to pay tax when it becomes independent.

SilverySurfer · 20/11/2019 15:08

braw
Thoroughly enjoying the poster full of opinions who believes the first minister is... Nicola Salmond?! Anyway OP YANBU.

It was a brain fart - shoot me. They are both fishy.

Tiredmumssquad · 20/11/2019 15:18

I'm Scottish and personally I think you stick together when the going gets tough not run away ! The majority voted no in the referendum that should be that ! Just like the majority voted yes for Brexit Confused

Cloverbeauty · 20/11/2019 15:36

If there is a second referendum and if its no again, will sturgeon actually accept that though?

LagunaBubbles · 20/11/2019 15:54

And of couurse, nobody wll have to pay tax when it becomes independent

Of course we will still pay tax.

Genevieva · 20/11/2019 16:01

I am with you on that Tiredmumssquad. Pretty much everything domestic is devolved too, so Scotland does not live under a Tory government, it lives under and SNP one. And quite frankly, I don't know anyone who is happy with the SNP's decisions around education, among other things.
