To think that the post office should post envelopes

I went to the post office to post my wedding thank you cards. The counter clerk was quite grumpy and told me off for pushing the cards under the grille!

She then gave me the stamps to stick on myself. I asked her why she couldn’t stamp them and put them in the mail bag behind her and she said the Post Office doesn’t deal with ordinary letters. There was a queue behind me so I had to take the stamps home to put on my envelopes.

The post box in front of the shop was “out of use.”

I know it’s not a big deal in the whole scheme of things but what’s the point in a post office you can’t post from?

OP posts:

And the post box was out of use so I had to walk a mile to the next post box in the rain.

Wait till it's stopped raining? Or till you're going somewhere else with a post box anyway?

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2019 06:53

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a postbox at the Post Office especially if there isn't a postbox nearby

MaybeitsMaybelline · 15/11/2019 06:57

I can’t believe I am reading this. Stamps are self adhesive, thee was a queue of people to get through and you feel the need to post a thread on here.

So everyone should stand in line for ages because you are too posh to post.

I must be really clever and ambidextrous because I can stand up and put a sticky label on an envelope without a work surface. Also I don’t believe for one minute there wasn’t a little surface to use even to the side of the counter. You know where weighing machine is or somewhere else in the shop.

Finally, guess what? they have a postbox at the post office too.

Cherrysoup · 15/11/2019 07:03

Why wouldn’t you buy your stamps, stick them on yourself like everyone else in the world does?

AmIThough · 15/11/2019 07:06

too posh to post GrinGrinGrin

longwayoff · 15/11/2019 07:06

Why is there not a handy machine in every PO that auto stamps our letters? Like a franking machine.

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/11/2019 07:10

too posh to post Grin Grin

That’s brilliant!!!

This thread has given me a right laugh this morning.

I can’t believe you tweeted to complain that the lady didn’t put your stamps on your 10 letters got you Grin

I believe they replied to your tweet with their predictable and empathetic response but behind the scenes I bet they were laughing their heads off Grin

Unclench OP and try and find some actual problems to worry about.

StoorieHoose · 15/11/2019 07:11

Mmmm could you link to your Twitter conversation? Oh you can't? That's because it doesn't exist Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 15/11/2019 07:15

Everybody’s going on about the fact that you wanted the lady to put the stamps on, but I am astounded that couldn’t post your letters at the post office. That’s ridiculous.

AmIThough · 15/11/2019 07:16

@longwayoff because if you're posting a small amount of letters it's much easier and quicker to use a stamp.

And you'd get idiots trying to force small parcels in, convinced they qualify as a letter

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2019 07:18

I remember when I did it at the desk it was a stamp with an ink pad. Didn't seem to put the person to too much trouble. I'm guessing like many places there have been staff cutbacks and people told to just do the bare minimum.

PenelopeFlintstone · 15/11/2019 07:34

Exactly. If I went to my post office with 10 letters they’d stamp them all ‘postage paid’ with a noisy stamping thingy (an ink stamp?) - I wouldn’t even get actual stamps. And then they’d automatically chuck them in a sack while I got my money out to pay.

Howlovely · 15/11/2019 07:37

Who would you like to play you in the film, OP? Somebody really heroic, strong and brave and not at all diva-ish.

doublebarrellednurse · 15/11/2019 07:49

Lol all the derogatory comments about MN yet here you are seeking approval anyway 🙄

If you don't think that asking someone to do extra tasks which you are more than capable of doing whilst there is a queue of people behind you, then posting to complain about it online and tweeting their employer isn't demanding or diva like then I dread to think what you must be like in other scenarios. Karen.

wanderings · 15/11/2019 07:53

How about Hyacinth Bucket?

"I think postmen should be trained to recognise first-class stamp houses."
"Why haven't you brought my invitation to the royal garden party?"
"For the next few days, all my mail is to be redirected to the QE2."

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 07:56

Well, on the plus side, you've given the PO social media department a good laugh.

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2019 07:57

OP be a good little woman and don't complain is clearly the consensus here

doublebarrellednurse · 15/11/2019 07:59

Yes @SnuggyBuggy that's absolutely what everyone has said 😂 good lord.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 15/11/2019 08:02

Biscuit, in fact have BiscuitBiscuit

SoupDragon · 15/11/2019 08:03

OP be a good little woman and don't complain is clearly the consensus here

Don't be ridiculous!

BasinHaircut · 15/11/2019 08:04

I can’t work out why you bothered going to an actual post office for ten stamps? Surely you would pick them up in just about any shop?

dementedpixie · 15/11/2019 08:06

The only time I go to a post office is if I need a proof of purchase for sending a parcel. Stamps are easily available in supermarkets and they usually have a post box too. They didn't refuse to post them, they refused to put stamps on them which you are perfectly able to do yourself

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2019 08:19

Well mocking someone for complaining about poor service is pretty shitty behaviour

Emlou07 · 15/11/2019 08:27

Yes, you were being unreasonable to expect them to put the stamps on for you.

No, you weren't being unreasonable for wanting her to put them in the bag.

I honestly think some people on here get a kick out of being extra petty in their replies! Have a cup of tea and a biscuit and calm the fuck down...
