To think that the post office should post envelopes

I went to the post office to post my wedding thank you cards. The counter clerk was quite grumpy and told me off for pushing the cards under the grille!

She then gave me the stamps to stick on myself. I asked her why she couldn’t stamp them and put them in the mail bag behind her and she said the Post Office doesn’t deal with ordinary letters. There was a queue behind me so I had to take the stamps home to put on my envelopes.

The post box in front of the shop was “out of use.”

I know it’s not a big deal in the whole scheme of things but what’s the point in a post office you can’t post from?

You need to be politer. The last time I was in the post office, the clerk couldn't do enough for me. Like this (see pic)

If this is the worst thing that's happened to you this week, OP, you're doing well.

RuggerHug · 15/11/2019 01:48

OP if you know an office that stamps without charge, let me know before the Christmas batch 😀

BritWifeinUSA · 15/11/2019 04:05

Should have asked to speak to the manager, Karen.

Beautiful3 · 15/11/2019 04:39

Every time I ask for a stamp, they always offer to put it on for me and pop it in the bag behind them. But I wouldnt have minded if she didn't. Maybe the member staff was having an off day? Or it was busy.

Super. Can’t wait for even longer Christmas queues now that putting stamps onto multiple batches of ordinary envelopes has been added to the post office task list.

Alicewond · 15/11/2019 05:00

But the post office response never happened on twitter did it? And you can’t accept you are in the wrong 😂

Alicewond · 15/11/2019 05:09

After reading your previous posts you seem angry a lot op 😂

Send an email next time

cravingmilkshake · 15/11/2019 05:14

Never in my dreams would I think of doing that! We had 110 wedding invitations, licked and stamped them by ourselves and walked them to the postbox which was in town, about a mile and a half away. We also did this with the thank you cards.

Hmm
AngelsOnHigh · 15/11/2019 05:28

Well done for sending thank you cards.
Just lately, people seem to just tack a thank you onto the place cards at the reception.

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/11/2019 05:35

You should have stuck the stamps on then passed them to the clerk. If the post box is out of order, they should be taking post in bags.

Rosehip10 · 15/11/2019 05:38

You really need to get a life OP.

AmIThough · 15/11/2019 05:43

This is hilarious. How pissed off would you be if you stood in the post office queue for an hour because there are 5 lazy fuckers in front of you all expecting the clerk to stamp and send 10 envelopes each?

If you knew you were sending thank you cards, why didn't you just buy extra stamps initially? Or buy the stamps from the supermarket?
Ohh because you're so entitled that you couldn't even comprehend actually doing it yourself...

Aren't some post offices franchised as well now? You weren't paying for the service, so why should you expect it. They are, in essence, a small business.

You're on another planet.

Aridane · 15/11/2019 05:49

If the postbox was out of use, you could have put the stamps on and then nipped back to her and asked her to put them in the bag when she finished serving the next customer

Lol - at mine, you would have to take a new ticket and queue all over again for 10+ minutes

KatherineJaneway · 15/11/2019 05:58

Care to post their Twitter response?

Durgasarrow · 15/11/2019 05:59

i can imagine a postal worker putting one stamp on a letter. Not ten. Not twenty. FFS.

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2019 05:59

I remember a few years back they were able to use this stamp as opposed to sticking individual stamps on. They'd stamp and count then you'd pay the total. I even remember helping a friend out his Christmas cards in this machine that did it.

It's not an unreasonable expectation to be able to post things at a Post Office

AmIThough · 15/11/2019 06:02

@SnuggyBuggy do you mean like a franking machine?
I don't think they have them in post offices because they're for use by companies rather than individuals and the system works slightly differently because of the way it's charged

SnuggyBuggy · 15/11/2019 06:04

To be fair the franking machine was in a massive Post Office in one of the UKs major cities, there were several in a largish room. Obviously wouldn't expect that in a small one. I do remember some sort of stamping process at the desk though.

Palaver1 · 15/11/2019 06:12

Your expectations are v unreasonable

jenesuisplus · 15/11/2019 06:27

Ex Post office here. With the christmas chaos already kicking in at PO there would be no way I'd have expected any of my staff to stamp numerous cards for a customer right now, especially if it was a simple all 1st/2nd class affair. 50% of the years post transactions are in the 12 weeks around christmas. So customers would be expected to put the stamps on the envelope themselves and then hand them over (without re-queueing) so we can get through the seemingly never ending queues.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2019 06:33

YABVU.

Beveren · 15/11/2019 06:47

How does expecting service make me a diva?

Expecting service that isn't the person's job, then tweeting her employers and coming on here to complain is just a tiny bit diva-ish.

Think about it - if you'd been in that queue, how happy would you be about your wait being substantially increased by everyone in front of you expecting the clerk to stick their stamps on for them?
