To think that the post office should post envelopes

Biggobyboo · 14/11/2019 19:02

I went to the post office to post my wedding thank you cards. The counter clerk was quite grumpy and told me off for pushing the cards under the grille!

She then gave me the stamps to stick on myself. I asked her why she couldn’t stamp them and put them in the mail bag behind her and she said the Post Office doesn’t deal with ordinary letters. There was a queue behind me so I had to take the stamps home to put on my envelopes.

The post box in front of the shop was “out of use.”

I know it’s not a big deal in the whole scheme of things but what’s the point in a post office you can’t post from?

I do find the concept of a post office where you can't post stuff a bit unreasonable.

I think other people are missing that aspect in their excitement at being able to tell you to stick your own stamps on.

Biggobyboo · 14/11/2019 19:20

Oh yes...well this is Mumsnet! GrinI’ve tweeted the PO so I’ll come back with what they say! I’ve even acknowledged it’s not a huge deal and I wasn’t at all rude to the clerk.

Not that it matters to random people on the internet but I have an invisible disability so walking a mile in the rain was annoying for me!

Oh and course trying to “catch ms out” with the number of cards vs invitations. Oh Mumsnet! So predictable! 😂

The people in the post office where I used to live were a joke they were so miserable, someone even did a google review on him, he was that bad, told me I needed to order some more HSBC envelopes for him, to send the cheques off, I asked in the bank, no it wasn't right, he should request more not me.

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 19:24

You’re a real diva, aren’t you?

MinTheMinx · 14/11/2019 19:24

She then gave me the stamps to stick on myself.

OMG you poor thing. And why on earth would she ask you to do that?

This is a joke, right?

Biggobyboo · 14/11/2019 19:27

How does expecting service make me a diva?

I’m posting on Mumsnet asking a question. I hardly stamped my feet and started screaming. I’m very un diva like in real life and it’s strange to be called names from random people who have just read a few lines of my comment. Confused

Just ask for proof of posting for each one - then they'll have to take them off you and they'll have a lot more work to do. When you come up against a jobsworth, it's useful to have some ammunition to fire back at them. They can't refuse to provide a proof of postage and have to take it and put it in their own bag.

Aside from tweeting the post office? Grin

Seriously OP, stick on your own stamps. Expecting a service indeed Hmm

onthecoins · 14/11/2019 19:55

Of course they should post envelopes, you'd just hand them over. But you can't expect them to stand there putting individual stamps on loads of envelopes.

You put the stamps on yourself.

dementedpixie · 14/11/2019 20:10

They arent there to stick your stamps on. I steer clear of the post office unless it's really necessary so wouldn't even have set foot in it to post thank you cards.

heartsonacake · 14/11/2019 20:15

YABVU. They have so much work to do; you need to be sticking stamps on your own envelopes. That’s not their job.

They’re the post office, they post things, so with the post box being out of order if you’d have stamped them yourself and then asked her to put them in the mail bag she would have done.

You, however, were rude and entitled by pushing the envelopes under and expecting her to do your job for you.

Darkstar4855 · 14/11/2019 20:18

YABU: they are busy, they don’t have time to stick stamps on for you. I bet if you’d put the stamps on they would have put them in the bag for you.

That really isn’t in their job description & part of the service, And because she wouldn’t do it ....
I’ve tweeted the PO

Biggobyboo · 14/11/2019 20:52

So why did the Post Office HQ, via the medium of Twitter, come back to me saying they were sorry to hear that and staff are absolutely there to put stamps on and post items for customers?

Don’t worry Mumsnetters, I haven’t named the branch to them so nobody will be “told off” 🙄 or “in trouble.”

I can just imagine the cries of “oh you are so evil OP, you got somebody sacked just before Christmas.”

Oh and of course “you sound nice OP.”

OP posts:
EskewedBeef · 14/11/2019 20:57

To cut a long story short: you bought 10 stamps. I'm surprised you thought there was some sort of extra service included with every stamp you buy.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 14/11/2019 21:05

"Not that it matters to random people on the internet but I have an invisible disability so walking a mile in the rain was annoying for me!"

Drip drip drip... usually happens when a thread doesn't go the OPs way.

Why do you think, OP? Use your common sense.

Because the big corporate machine unfortunately cannot call you out for the rude, lazy, entitled person that you are and has to pander to people like you.

Alsohuman · 14/11/2019 21:05

How about you’re an entitled idiot, OP?

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 14/11/2019 21:18

I would NEVER expect the PO staff to stick stamps on envelopes! My local PO doesn’t have a postbox outside so I buy the stamps. Go off to one side and stick them on then they go at the end of the counter and the counter assistant pops them in the sack.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 14/11/2019 21:44

She then gave me the stamps to stick on myself.

Wouldn't it make more sense to stick them on the envelopes....

1Morewineplease · 14/11/2019 22:02

Bloody hell OP. You had a load of cards to list... you should have just bought the stamps. Stuck them on and posted them. They were ordinary first or second class. If the cards were to be sent abroad they may have helped you but , generally, they deal with larger packets and parcels or overseas.
Did you not know this?

CactusAndCacti · 14/11/2019 22:27

Lots of post offices stick my stamp on, I would never ask at the one, far too grumpy.

They will even put letters in the bag that I pull from mine with a stamp already on.

I'm not sure if this means I have a friendly face or a really scary 'don't make me mad' face.

JasonPollack · 14/11/2019 23:11

Lazy & entitled. To have to stick your own stamps! How awful. I'm sure if you'd have stuck the stamps on and requeued they would have posted them for you.
