My new Barbour jacket

Apparently there has been a recent troll post about a Barbour coat? Well I’m not that person, just to clear that up.

After feeling shit about myself this morning I’ve just bought myself this coat. It’s much more expensive than what I’d normally pay but I wanted to treat myself (and I do a lot of walking with the dog).
I however have no idea about fashion! I’m 38 ... is it frumpy? Twee or anything else that suggests shit? Is Barbour a name that people take the piss out of? (Like stone island - football hooligan)?

And anyone that’s had such a coat, will it last? Does it rip easy or let rain in? Is it worth the price? I can still take it back.

(And for that person that insists on asking, my AIBU is: AIBU to think this is a nice coat that’s worth the money?

I love it, I think it looks fashionable and practical. Barbour is a very nice brand in my opinion.

Thehop · 10/11/2019 16:08

Gorgeous

tillytrotter1 · 10/11/2019 16:08

A traditional style Barbour won't let the rain in and is almost indestructable, I don't know about the fashion item you've bought but it should be the same material but it's a lot shorter.
One warning though, beware of wearing it in the car if you have non-leather seats, OH once ruined the car seats by wearing a waxed jacket, it was very greasy.

Whatsitlike · 10/11/2019 16:09

I have a total of 5 Barbour coats/jackets from the padded to wax jackets, I could not give a monkeys chuff if they are fashionable/frumpy or whatever I like them all.

But I am not that struck on any of the black jackets, the one you have bought is not my style, not a fan of 'fur' hoods', but have a navy one similar without the hood. They are not waterproof but very warm, never had any coat rip.

But if you like it dont worry what anyone else thinks, but if your looking for a waterproof jacket, sure others will come along with suggestions

That was a troll post? Ffs!

dollius · 10/11/2019 16:10

It’ll survive the apocalypse

DontTouchTheMoustache · 10/11/2019 16:11

My only experience of them was years ago working with a oh so trendy poser type whose finace bought her one. Now that i have seen the price of them i can see why she was annoyed that i wasnt remotely interested 😂

They look very nice OP, i wouldnt worry about any associations to the brand as I'm not aware of them.

Myshitisreal · 10/11/2019 16:12

I think it's really lovely. Practical meets style. My only issue works be it doesn't seem to be bum covering but as long as you're happy 😊

HouseCoatAndPopSocks · 10/11/2019 16:13

Oh I thought all Barbour costs were waterproof? That was the main reason I bought it ...

RozHuntleysStump · 10/11/2019 16:14

Bit steep in the price!

makingmammaries · 10/11/2019 16:15

Actually, they are not indestructible. They develop holes. However, the Barbour factory used to, and perhaps still does, repair them nicely at moderate cost.

PotteringAlong · 10/11/2019 16:15

I love my Barbour. It wasn’t even a sell in the shops one - it was a second from the factory shop and 10 years on its still as good as when I got it.

alreadyinchristmasmood · 10/11/2019 16:15

It's beautiful, OP! Enjoy it!

makingmammaries · 10/11/2019 16:15

They have to be waxed from time to time to stay waterproof.

Lockheart · 10/11/2019 16:15

Try posting in style and beauty, they'll know about fashion.

HouseCoatAndPopSocks · 10/11/2019 16:18

I’ve just read up on it and it’s not waterproof 😂 now I’m just wondering if I should trade it in for a north face or something 🤔

OP posts:
DoctorVanilla · 10/11/2019 16:19

I don’t think those padded jackets need waxing. The green traditional ones do.

TonTonMacoute · 10/11/2019 16:20

Oh I thought all Barbour costs were waterproof?

No, they aren't. What does it say on the label?

I have three Barbours at the moment, only two are waterproof.

HouseCoatAndPopSocks · 10/11/2019 16:20

North face are even more expensive! I never realised how much this brand business costed! (Can tell ive been out of the loop for a while!)

annielennoxstuckinmyhead · 10/11/2019 16:21

How did it come about that the coat thread was a troll post?

DoctorVanilla · 10/11/2019 16:22

I have the most godawful fleece lined mac from Lands End which is fully waterproof but is a crime of fashion. I think the Barbour will be drizzle proof but not drench proof. It will dry out quickly, though, as long as you give it plenty of air. Will you actually walk your dog in a complete downpour?

Disfordarkchocolate · 10/11/2019 16:22

It's nice but I like more of my bum covered.

isseywith4vampirecats · 10/11/2019 16:22

i sell on ebay for a cat charity and barbour is one of the brands that still sells very well even second hand ones fetch good prices and the one you have picked is very smart

MeClavdivs · 10/11/2019 16:23

Wait, what? The Barbour post was a troll???
