My new Barbour jacket

Apparently there has been a recent troll post about a Barbour coat? Well I’m not that person, just to clear that up.

After feeling shit about myself this morning I’ve just bought myself this coat. It’s much more expensive than what I’d normally pay but I wanted to treat myself (and I do a lot of walking with the dog).
I however have no idea about fashion! I’m 38 ... is it frumpy? Twee or anything else that suggests shit? Is Barbour a name that people take the piss out of? (Like stone island - football hooligan)?

And anyone that’s had such a coat, will it last? Does it rip easy or let rain in? Is it worth the price? I can still take it back.

(And for that person that insists on asking, my AIBU is: AIBU to think this is a nice coat that’s worth the money?

Oh, I’m 38 now and don’t really care about fashion when it comes to being warm and comfortable!
Barbour jackets are the uniform of the playground mums here!

raspberrymolakoff · 10/11/2019 17:55

Mine is traditional style and about 30 years old! Still going strong. You can even have them resurfaced I believe. My 30 year old daughter is always trying to borrow it so I don't think it has loser status!

Aprilsinparis · 10/11/2019 18:00

Absolutely gorgeous OP. I'm going to put it on my Christmas list☺

Waveysnail · 10/11/2019 18:01

Not waterproof and £120 on own website

Waveysnail · 10/11/2019 18:02

Berghaus is ridiculous money but mone lasted 20 years, repaired by berghaus is gets damaged and breathable. I miss it so much

GoodGriefSunshine · 10/11/2019 18:03

It's not really fashionable or unfashionable. It's a style they have done for a while so it is pretty mainstream which if, as you say, you are not particularly into fashion, then it is a good choice. It will be something you will be happy to wear for a good few years.

PickAChew · 10/11/2019 18:06

I have this one which has served me well in the recent rain

Beautiful coat, OP.
But for all you dog walkers out there, can I recommend the Seasalt Janelle coat? It's warm and waterproof... as in drench-proof waterproof Amazing coat.
And for icier days, Land's End do amazing long down jackets (I'm 5'10" and mine falls at mid-calf). Not great for pouring rain but a bit of rain does no harm.
Neither coat is for the firm fashionista, but if it's practicality, durability, and warmth you're after, they won't let you down.
I've had my Land's End coat for years!

tttigress · 10/11/2019 18:09

Mine is only 15 years old, see pretty new compared with some of the other mumsneter's Barbour's.

I love it, it's a wax one.

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 10/11/2019 18:09

Not that keen on it for £200! Dont like the 4 patch pockets on the front and the draw string looking back .... find another that's waterproof for sue

NorthernSpirit · 10/11/2019 18:11

This is a quilted Barbour, not a waxed jacket (the waxed jackets need to be re-oiled).

It’s lovely!

I have a similar Barbour. I’ve had it over 7 years, it still looks new and is the warmest jacket I own. I great investment.

Don’t swap for a North Face - all the chavs wear that brand and have devalued it!

linentowel · 10/11/2019 18:13

FFS, was that a troll?

habipprtyh · 10/11/2019 18:15

The only people who 'devalue' brands are those that make a judgement based on who is wearing it over the quality of the item itself Hmm

theboxfamilytree · 10/11/2019 18:16

£200 for something that isn't even waterproof?!

Bluerussian · 10/11/2019 18:18

Very nice indeed, Housecoat, wasn't what I expected. Looks good.
I like Barbour.

Meercatsarecats · 10/11/2019 18:19

I wouldn't pay £200 for a polyester not waterproof coat.
I would go for down or spend a bit more and get something all weather proof from north face maybe.
The style is nice enough but I think you could get similar for better value, or better quality for your money.

onioncrumble · 10/11/2019 18:19

It's lovely, congratulations. I am assuming it's not real fur? I was in Louis Vuitton on Saturday and was saddened by how much of this season is fox fur.

ChocOrCheese · 10/11/2019 18:19

I have one similar, but belted, that I bought in 2013 and it is still going strong. Very practical and great for dog walking. Washed well when someone spilt a whole cup of coffee down it. It's not completely waterproof but will survive a shower well enough. If you get totally drenched it may get damp down to the lining but you'd have to be out for a while for it to get that bad.

PollyShelby · 10/11/2019 18:20

Barbour international aren't the same as Barbour. The traditional ones are nicer imo and worth the money as easy to repair and fully waterproof.

oohnicevase · 10/11/2019 18:24

That isn't a wax jacket .. it's padded / Quilted.. Barbour has come a long way since the traditional wax jacket . !!

IScreamForIceCreams · 10/11/2019 18:28

My DH just re-waxed his Barbour jacket. Looks as new all shiny and waterproof again. Mine just smells of wet dog....
