My new Barbour jacket

Apparently there has been a recent troll post about a Barbour coat? Well I’m not that person, just to clear that up.

After feeling shit about myself this morning I’ve just bought myself this coat. It’s much more expensive than what I’d normally pay but I wanted to treat myself (and I do a lot of walking with the dog).
I however have no idea about fashion! I’m 38 ... is it frumpy? Twee or anything else that suggests shit? Is Barbour a name that people take the piss out of? (Like stone island - football hooligan)?

And anyone that’s had such a coat, will it last? Does it rip easy or let rain in? Is it worth the price? I can still take it back.

(And for that person that insists on asking, my AIBU is: AIBU to think this is a nice coat that’s worth the money?

Barbour International are the more fashion over function division I think, I brought this one last year for dog walking and it is lovely and warm without being too bulky and lets not a drop of water in www.orvis.co.uk/p/barbour-thrunton-wax-jacket/2zfz

jamesforagirl · 10/11/2019 18:43

Was the Barbour coat cut with scissors thread a load of rubbish???

Scardanelli · 10/11/2019 18:45

I have a Rohan waterproof coat for dog walking (also pricey, but completely worth it to stay dry).

I'd wonder, OP, whether the hood works for dog walking. I realise this sounds bizarre, but it took me ages to find a coat that was waterproof but which also had a hood that would a) stay up properly and b) not cover my face so much that I felt as if I were wearing blinkers (I am very small, though, so hoods may be more problematic for me than for others).

I've had my Rohan coat for about 10 years, and they have repaired it for free in the shop, when little things have gone wrong with it (a zip stopped working, and a pocket lining came apart).

No idea if it's fashionable, though, and I don't care!

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 10/11/2019 18:48

Irrespective of whether it looks good or lets water, the main reason people love them is they are silent when you are moving in them. I have two. They stink, they are cold if you don't wear a liner or fleece but I love them. The silence compared to my Lowe Alpine jacket which I also love but after a very short time the noise it makes just gets on my tits big time.

DogAndCatPerson · 10/11/2019 18:49

The quilted ones aren’t waterproof.

If you like it, bugger everyone else.

MaeveDidIt · 10/11/2019 18:50

It's lovely.

SavageBeauty73 · 10/11/2019 18:53

Love it. I have a Barbour; 10 years and still going strong.

Justaboy · 10/11/2019 18:56

Interesting old company withj quite some history their jackets are real faves with the hunting shooting & fishing fraternity seems also the Her Maj, Phillip and Charles are quite fond of them too.

Even my ex has got one, wonders if i'd get it re-waxed for her!.

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2019 19:05

It's lovely but I wouldn't pay £200 for it.

I've had a very similar coat for 3 years. It was £55 on my local market and still looks new even now.

AskMeHow · 10/11/2019 19:08

It's obviously not a waterproof coat, you can tell just by a glance. Stitching lets water in Confused that's why technical garms all have taped seams.

I'd return it and buy something else tbh, especially if you forked out £200 for it.

If you're gonna buy a North Face, stay away from those godawful down coats in vile colours. They're everywhere these days. Vom.

Passthecherrycoke · 10/11/2019 19:11

We are a family of Barbour coats, and I own that one also. They’re ok, I don’t think they’re particularly fashionable or prestigious, they are pretty good quality for £200 (which in all honesty, I don’t think is that much for a winter coat)

Samosaurus · 10/11/2019 19:39

It's a nice enough coat, but if you are going to shell out for a Barbour, they do some much nicer styles, for example www.barbour.com/uk/catalog/product/view/id/21752/s/barbour-beadnellr-wax-jacket/category/86/

feeona123 · 10/11/2019 19:44

I’m 38 and I have a similar if not the same jacket!

(Although bought mine for £99 in HoF Jan sale this year!!)

WorraLiberty · 10/11/2019 19:45

I have no idea why that made me snort with laughter Grin Grin

Passthecherrycoke · 10/11/2019 19:50

I know I was giggling typing it Grin that’s why I left it in

StarGOLD · 10/11/2019 20:11

Love Barbour, the fitted quilted jackets I have have all been heavily discounted (thank goodness) but my fave is my Gamefair. Old style, proper country but quilted inside. I don't like the ladies waxed jackets as they're too fitted for me. I always buy a small men's..

Daftapath · 10/11/2019 20:46

The other Barbour thread is still up so by no means confirmed that the OP was a troll. She just had two threads because so many people got involved and posted and then she disappeared. When ops disappear, those invested often claim troll. We will never know, I guess.

Nice jacket op. Very expensive! Hope it doesn't rip Grin

IrridiumFlares · 11/11/2019 14:29

@HouseCoatAndPopSocks
It looks like it's not waterproof?

The waxed ones are fine for walking the dog, but not practical for all day everyday working in the field wear.

Downsides to waxed jackets:
they're heavy
they aren't warm
they stink
they destroy upholstery, as the wax comes off everywhere.

So they're only good for a brief, dry, autumnal walk for the dog.
NOT worth 200 quid.

To my mind you'd be better off getting a goretex jacket with sealed seams.

SamanthaBrique · 11/11/2019 14:32

Surely one doesn't just buy a brand-new Barbour? One inherits it when it's already at least 50 years old and covered in mud and dog hair! Wink

Whattodoabout · 11/11/2019 14:32

You’re literally paying ten times the amount of a regular black parka purely for the small Barbour label. Absolute rip off.

Passthecherrycoke · 11/11/2019 14:34

It’s only a Barbour Samantha, we’re not in the 1950s anymore, or a tilly bagshawe novel

PineappleLumps · 11/11/2019 14:39

The wax Barbour coats are waterproof, I love mine, they last a long time.

NameChangeNugget · 11/11/2019 14:59

I really like it

That made me laugh. I had a barbour storm coat (I think it was called that), let my son wear it once when he was fourteen and his friend said he looked like a farmer :-). Not that there is anything wrong with looking like a farmer, if you are one.

thegreatestgiftthatipossess · 11/11/2019 21:21

I hate Barbour coats, not sure if it's because I used to sell them and hated the feel of the wax...but... that is a nice coat.
