My new Barbour jacket

Apparently there has been a recent troll post about a Barbour coat? Well I’m not that person, just to clear that up.

After feeling shit about myself this morning I’ve just bought myself this coat. It’s much more expensive than what I’d normally pay but I wanted to treat myself (and I do a lot of walking with the dog).
I however have no idea about fashion! I’m 38 ... is it frumpy? Twee or anything else that suggests shit? Is Barbour a name that people take the piss out of? (Like stone island - football hooligan)?

And anyone that’s had such a coat, will it last? Does it rip easy or let rain in? Is it worth the price? I can still take it back.

(And for that person that insists on asking, my AIBU is: AIBU to think this is a nice coat that’s worth the money?

I have a waxed one, after a few months it started leaking around the neck. I never bothered waxing it as I really hate the thing, it stinks of wax, it is stiff and uncomfortable and if you want to be warm you need to buy a liner. Never got a quilted one as I wanted waterproof and most of them were for old ladies when I bought mine.

Some years ago it was fashionable to have a really beaten up one, years before that they were something 'country people' wore, shooting, hunting sort of thing, then 'yummy mummies' started wearing them.

If you just want a leakproof jacket I would look elsewhere because there are many similar ones. You pay for the name with Barbour so if you just want the name, go ahead, if you want a nice jacket, they look OK but are nothing special to wear.

SunsetBoulevard3 · 10/11/2019 17:21

I wore them a lot in the nineties. I bought one recently which is two or three sizes smaller than the label says. Gutted. Anyone want a second hand Barbour? It fits size 10 to 12.

TellySavalashairbrush · 10/11/2019 17:21

Dh bought me a fabulous Barbour jumper yesterday for Christmas’ it was expensive, but it’s lovely, sorry no connection to coats, but I’m so pleased with it I wanted to share Grin

TooMuch87 · 10/11/2019 17:27

It's nice. But if I had £200 to spend I'd buy one of the Seasalt raincoats a PP linked to. Or one of the traditional Barbour wax jackets. I think they look more practical and timeless. I'd worry that yours would look dated in five/ten years time. I'm personally not a fan of fur hoods or logos either, so wouldn't buy it for those reasons.

ruralcat · 10/11/2019 17:28

I have one of the more traditional Barbour coats. It's been great.

feelinghelplesstoday · 10/11/2019 17:28

I experience of quilted Barbours but I have a waxed one bought for me for my 21st birthday. I'm 50 in June and it's still in regular use. Couldn't be without it

SchadenfreudePersonified · 10/11/2019 17:29

Which one was the troll?

There have been a couple of Barbour advertising threads lately.

Sagradafamiliar · 10/11/2019 17:30

It thought it was a product placement thread? There were a couple of them.
Sorry, I don't like it and think the pockets look dated. Its just another fur-hooded parka but with a brand name stuck on the front.

Skim link 🙄

Which affiliate network are you part of????

diddl · 10/11/2019 17:34

I think it's frumpy.

Like when M&S try to do something fashionable-doesn't quite work.

But, all that that means is that I wouldn't buy it for me.

SonjaMorgan · 10/11/2019 17:34

@HouseCoatAndPopSocks if you want something waterproof I would send it back. Barbour is a good brand but I find the jackets more style over substance. Do you have a Cotswold outdoor near you? They tend to have a good variety of brands such as North Face and Patagonia and occasionally they are on sale. Then you could try some on and make sure it is what you want.

WaggleWiggle · 10/11/2019 17:35

HundredMilesAnHour is spot on - your jacket is from their motorcycling range so the focus is on it being lightweight, wind proof and very thin (it is probably going to be a few mm thin). I have a near-identical version in navy. The wax coats are the waterproof ones and they also do some thicker insulated coats with the focus being more on warmth. My Barbour jacket is one I wear in Autumn when it’s a bit chilly. On really cold, wet days I wear a Jack Wolfskin coat that comes to my knees when I walk my dogs.

onmysofa · 10/11/2019 17:36

I like it and partly for its name I admit, the feather and down ones are so warm.

SpringFan · 10/11/2019 17:38

My Barbour is nearly 30 years old, has been rewaxed a couple of times and I love it. I have a fleecy liner for it as well. I love the hand warmer pockets.
That one isn't for me, I like them longer. However, now I have a bus pass and hang about in bus queues, I am thinking about one of the Seasalt raincoats.

KatherineJaneway · 10/11/2019 17:38

Which one was the troll?

The one where the friend was staying with OP and bought a new Barbour coat. The friend then accused OP, or someone in the house, of cutting the coat. On the second thread, first one basically filled up with people who can't figure out how to use the Watch button, the OP suddenly disappeared leading to the troll theory.

Dilkhush · 10/11/2019 17:44

I have a sea salt waterproof jacket, fir lined and very cosy and totally waterproof.
I also have a bright red vinyl raincoat from Boden, not lined so more suitable on warmer days.
Love them both.

I would go waterproof for dog walking.

whatsinthebagwhatcoulditbe · 10/11/2019 17:45

I love it. It's very glamorous.

littlehappyhippo · 10/11/2019 17:46

@HouseCoatAndPopSocks

Yeah it's really nice. Smile

orangeteal · 10/11/2019 17:49

I think it looks cheap for the price, though I appreciate the brand gives away the fact it isn't cheap! I don't like the fur, but if you do that's all that matters.

ihearttc · 10/11/2019 17:49

I have that coat and whilst it looks lovely it isn't actually very warm.

SavoyCabbage · 10/11/2019 17:49

I like it but to me it’s a fashion coat rather than a walking in the woods coat.

What about Didrikson?

EntropyRising · 10/11/2019 17:49

Mine is about 10 years old and I re-wax it every year, it's warm/waterproof/all-around excellent.

It's been through at least 500 rainy rugby/football matches and still in good shape.

EntropyRising · 10/11/2019 17:51

Oh! I missed your link.

I think it's far too short to be practical.

CatFaceCats · 10/11/2019 17:52

I have that one - it’s on it’s 3rd year now!
I live in the NE of Scotland and typically wear it Oct - May and it’s held up really well. Yes, it’s not waterproof, but it’s shower proof. I won’t get soaked in a downpour for 10 mins, but I would if I stood around for longer if that makes sense?! Very cosy, and the hood is roomy so keeps your head nice and dry.

Happygoldfinch · 10/11/2019 17:54

I love it, and I want one.
