My new Barbour jacket

Apparently there has been a recent troll post about a Barbour coat? Well I’m not that person, just to clear that up.

After feeling shit about myself this morning I’ve just bought myself this coat. It’s much more expensive than what I’d normally pay but I wanted to treat myself (and I do a lot of walking with the dog).
I however have no idea about fashion! I’m 38 ... is it frumpy? Twee or anything else that suggests shit? Is Barbour a name that people take the piss out of? (Like stone island - football hooligan)?

And anyone that’s had such a coat, will it last? Does it rip easy or let rain in? Is it worth the price? I can still take it back.

(And for that person that insists on asking, my AIBU is: AIBU to think this is a nice coat that’s worth the money?

The wax coats from Barbour are waterproof Smile

Sexnotgender · 10/11/2019 16:24

I’ll be honest I’m not a massive fan of those particular Barbour jackets. But Barbour in general is a good make, I’ve got a proper wax one and it’s great in winter.

bloodywhitecat · 10/11/2019 16:25

I have a waxed Barbour that keeps me dry no matter how much rain is chucking down, if you want waterproof and Barbour go for a waxed one.

TonTonMacoute · 10/11/2019 16:26

The Cornish company Seasalt have some quite nice winter raincoats here, cheaper too.

PapayaCoconut · 10/11/2019 16:27

It's nice.

Clementine8 · 10/11/2019 16:27

I have a different Barbour coat and it ripped under the arm. It’s really put me off the brand. I have north face ones worn a lot more and a lot older that are still in excellent condition.

Xiaoxiong · 10/11/2019 16:28

I wouldn't pay £200 for something that wasn't waterproof for dog walking. A traditional waxed Barbour yes, but I think that "Barbour International" brand must be a spin off for fashion.

I've got an ancient waxed jacket a similar length to that from a brand called Jack Murphy which is very good. I also got a Seasalt Janelle for dog walking. Long enough to cover my thighs, fully waterproof but breathable, and a lovely hood. And a dipped hem in the back so I don't keep spattering mud up my legs in the fields. It's perfect.

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 10/11/2019 16:29

I've had regatta coats in the past that are nice, warm and waterproof. Cheaper than what you've paid. Think I got mine half price for £50 from debenhams. I've also got a northface that I got from an outlet village. It was only a few pounds more than your Barbour. You often find regatta in outlet villages if you have any nearby. Or online they often have sales and discount codes available.

DryHeaving · 10/11/2019 16:29

I have the traditional waxed one, it's completely waterproof. Cost about £260 and still looks brand new years later

HouseCoatAndPopSocks · 10/11/2019 16:31

I never saw the original Barbour post ... I just saw it mentioned on another thread and they said it was a troll post? Sorry if I’m mistaken

Staffy1 · 10/11/2019 16:35

Why are they so expensive?

Smallfacesfan · 10/11/2019 16:37

I treated myself to the Barbour Beaufort jacket a couple of months ago, and I love it.

GREATAUNT1 · 10/11/2019 16:38

It’s up to you Op, but I wouldn’t pay £199 for a parker. I did try several Barbour jackets in the sale a few years ago but returned them all as my usual size was too big & baggy, & in the size down the arms were tight & the belt wrapped round my waist almost twice.

playitsam · 10/11/2019 16:42

I have a few Barbours including wax ones, I've just bought the one you've got but in green, I wore it while it was raining yesterday (ok it wasn't torrential) and it kept me dry, I just gave it a shake when I got in home.
I don't think it would stand up to much rain but the odd shower was fine for a short time

FudgeBrownie2019 · 10/11/2019 16:44

I have this one and it's so warm and lovely for dog walks even when the weather is awful.

Who cares if it's twee or not what someone else might wear; you love it, I love it, we can't both be wrong.

raspberryk · 10/11/2019 16:44

I have a Barbour jacket and I generally like them.
That one however looks like a very ordinary coat (boring) and as it isn't even waterproof, completely useless item for 200 quid imo.

habipprtyh · 10/11/2019 16:50

I'm from the horsey world where we all wore wax cottons long before the fashion world found Barbour.

What you have there is a poor attempt at keeping up with fashion. A few years back Barbour quilted jackets were the in thing. Seems they have crossed it with a parka to try and stay on trend but the if you remove the Barbour label what you have is actually a nit very nice weird padded parka.

Joerev · 10/11/2019 16:54

I have a life’s Barbour Coats. All have done really well

Can’t beat my Canada goose one though. Love that!!!

DowntownAbby · 10/11/2019 16:54

You'd have been far, far better off with a proper Barbour jacket rather than a fashion item.

In your case - for your intended use - I'd have bought Berghaus.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/11/2019 17:07

Oh I thought all Barbour costs were waterproof? That was the main reason I bought it ...

There's a difference between Barbour and Barbour International. Barbour International is a sub-brand that takes their inspiration from motorcycling and uses 'more contemporary' fabrics i.e. not just the waterproof waxed cotton that you seem to have been thinking of that is more the Barbour mainline.

Maybe next time ask the question on MN before you buy then you can make a more informed choice before it costs you any money.

Babybel90 · 10/11/2019 17:11

It looks like a nice coat OP, I’d consider Barbour to be a very good make, they still make the traditional waxed jackets in South Shields so I’d rather pay more for one of those than £100 for something that’s been knocked up in a sweatshop in China.

JenniferM1989 · 10/11/2019 17:11

Was that post a troll post was it? I never knew!

I think Barbour is a good brand. It sits somewhere in the not over the top posh setting but not cheap setting either. I don't see a lot of people in Barbour jackets but the people I have, seem to dress well? It just seems like the type of low key, stylish and warm style to me that someone who can pick a decent jacket to wear would wear it

Tellmetruth4 · 10/11/2019 17:13

Was the ripped Barbour thread a troll post? I’m normally quite good at spotting trolls but I did get sucked in.

SweepTheHalls · 10/11/2019 17:14

Quilted ones are not waterproof, but they are lovely and warm ! I love mine

willdoitinaminute · 10/11/2019 17:19

Barbour international are a separate company to Barbour, started for motorcycling range clothing rather than the thorn proof/waterproof country wear.
