Yesterday I took delivery of a new handheld cordless mini vacuum and I couldn’t wait for it to charge up so I could go and Hoover my skirting boards without having to drag the massive big Dyson around the house! I was so excited I was going round the house last night looking for things to Hoover up! My husband called me sad but I was so happy!

I also love buying anything new for the kitchen. I bough a multi bladed herb cutter the other day and oh it gave me such pleasure to use it on some parsley for dinner!

When I was at uni I used to love buying matching stationary which some people might think is a bit sad.

I am a married 33-year-old mother of one and this is my life now Grin

What are your nerdy/sad/uncool things in life that bring you excitement/joy?

Wind turbines.

Nononononono33 · 07/11/2019 18:27

My ideal nerdy Saturday would be spent doing a jigsaw while checking out planes on my plane finder app. I live near a small airport where we get lots of Beluga aircraft landing and taking off so I like watching out for them.

mogtheexcellent · 07/11/2019 18:29

Completely outs self...

Bricks. Not the Lego kind.

AgeLikeWine · 07/11/2019 18:29

Transport stuff. I’m a total geek about planes, trains & automobiles. I can tell an A330 apart from a 777 from the shape of their engines and the wheels on their landing gear. I am tell the engine size of a BMW just by looking at the exhaust pipe. I am deeply, unapologetically sad Grin.

KilljoysDutch · 07/11/2019 18:30

@NoHummus Look for the Happy Mail UK and Europe group on Facebook! We do lots of exchanges of things from penpal mail to secret santa and advent calenders.

Osquito · 07/11/2019 18:35

I’m loving all the map enthusiastic here! boast I actually started a Tumblr about maps, it got very popular and when I didn’t have time to run it anymore had to hand over the reins to someone else Haloween Sad I still buy old or foreign atlases from charity shops...

Tea-towels. If I didn’t have a tiny kitchen I’d have drawers full. The usual souvenir ones from towns, some fancy Irish linen ones that are block-printed, and some really gorgeous crazy modern ones... but they must all be the standard traditional size and weight. I bought my sister a beautiful one with amber koi and she framed it Smile. I get EXTREMELY upset when someone stains/burns one, but apparently “these are my SPECIAL tea-towels” sounds like I’m joking???

I also love Swamp Thing (Alan Moore), which I suppose is a bit niche, even though comic book characters are massive now. Anyone remember the tv show? I dream of owning all the comics...

Osquito · 07/11/2019 18:36

@mogtheexcellent There was recently a feature on a brick-collector in the i newspaper!

SeraphinaDombegh · 07/11/2019 18:42

Post boxes. I love the different royal insignia they have on them and the way they tell a geographic story about population spread. Blush

Also maps, and old books.

Cakeweek · 07/11/2019 18:42

Bin liners that fit - we just have a bog standard IKEA bin but the liners I think will fit often don't.

Yarn. New self-striping yarn especially. I'm coveting West Yorkshire Spinners fairy lights at the moment but can't afford/ justify spending money on me.

Decluttering. I'm trying to do the children's toys and our books before Christmas. I love it when I clear out a drawer or cupboard.

petrol prices

NaviSprite · 07/11/2019 18:56

New stationary, I love buying nice pens and pencils (I’m a somewhat artist) and I get really excited when I’m allowed onto the stationary aisle when shopping with DH (he’s not a monster he just knows I’ll go stupid and buy things I don’t actually need yet, like replacement fine liners and such 😂).

Georgenord · 07/11/2019 18:59

@timeforawine you can buy diamonds with real money, but you don’t need to!

Thinkle · 07/11/2019 19:04

Packing. Holidays or house moves, bring it on! Both the efficient use of space and the organisation with lists.

BustyBarb · 07/11/2019 19:08

I love buses, trains and planes, plus ships to a lesser extent. My idea of a good weekend is walking the perimeter fence at Heathrow and getting the free buses.

Spacerader · 07/11/2019 19:09

I’m with you op, I bought a new cordless vac a few weeks ago. I was so excited that I hoovered the house over and over for days. I’m pretty sure my previous hoover was also just for show because I was mortified by how much the new one was picking up even tho I’d only hoovered with the old one that morning.

I also love logging on to check our savings going up. We’ve only recently just got serious about saving so it’s a nice feeling knowing we have money should anything go wrong.

I also have always hated playing g games on my phone. But recently started playing soda crush and have becomes obsessed with opening it at least once a day to get my daily free bonus without breaking a streak. Currently on day 67. (I don’t think I will last much longer mind, I’m starting to get bored)

CravingCheese · 07/11/2019 19:09

Saving money / a good deal. Gives me the fuzzies.
An afternoon with nothing on my to do list.

Lord of the rings.

certain styles of music.

Getting a really awesome hug by my DH.
It may be cliche but I really do think that I fell in love with him because of his hugs. Well, not just because of them. But they're one of the main reasons I was initially attracted to him... I don't know if that's nerdy but it's definitely sappy. 😅

Mammylamb · 07/11/2019 19:11

@thecatsthecats. Your mantra should be “complete, appropriate and accurate”

BustyBarb · 07/11/2019 19:12

Snap @AgeLikeWine

Love a 777 with its three pairs of wheels on each bogie!

You also obsessed with Flightradar24 ?

timeforawine · 07/11/2019 19:19

Whew Grinstarted partying and suddenly thought oh crap am i getting charged

AgeLikeWine · 07/11/2019 19:20

@BustyBarb Of course! I work near a big airport so I’m constantly checking Flightradar24 & looking out of the window Smile

NationMcKinley · 07/11/2019 19:20

Cleaning and making my house all cosy and welcoming. I also love house plants and have loads of cuttings on the go.

Charity shop shopping: - I only buy what I need / what I REALLY like. My wardrobe is probably about 60% charity shop now and I love that. Recycling, a bargain and helping charities. Win win.

I used to be a truanting, goth wild child and go to all manner of dodgy gigs etc. My mother is baffled at my character change Grin

highheelsandweathercocks · 07/11/2019 19:20

Oh in addition to my Flightrader, flat pack and storage obsessions, I could spend hours poring over maps.

I also have a ridiculous amount of magnets. I collect them when we we go anywhere. I've got my DH into it now. On a family holiday last year I came back with six, he thought that was excessive. Six months later he went on a work trip abroad and came home with four. I'm very particular with that side of the fridge, they are all perfectly arranged. I'm going to need a bigger fridge soon though.

khaleesi71 · 07/11/2019 19:22

@easyandy101 that's an amazing link - thank you GrinGrin

Loveislandaddict · 07/11/2019 19:30

I used to love buying new knitting patterns, deciding what to knit next (don’t knit at the moment). Get the same thrill when choosing what book next to read
