Yesterday I took delivery of a new handheld cordless mini vacuum and I couldn’t wait for it to charge up so I could go and Hoover my skirting boards without having to drag the massive big Dyson around the house! I was so excited I was going round the house last night looking for things to Hoover up! My husband called me sad but I was so happy!

I also love buying anything new for the kitchen. I bough a multi bladed herb cutter the other day and oh it gave me such pleasure to use it on some parsley for dinner!

When I was at uni I used to love buying matching stationary which some people might think is a bit sad.

I am a married 33-year-old mother of one and this is my life now Grin

What are your nerdy/sad/uncool things in life that bring you excitement/joy?

I haven’t loved a MN thread so much in years. You’re all bloody mad but fantastic. To the poster that mentioned Bailii, thank you. I have found my nirvana.

Stillinbedat10am · 07/11/2019 19:40

Another one here for Geocaching! I find caches, I own caches, I discuss caching online and I host and attend Geocacher meet-up events!

@Subeccoo which loop are you doing? I always like to hear about other people's caching adventures. Smile

StroppyWoman · 07/11/2019 19:43

Hamilton (and actually all things Lin-Manuel Miranda). I listen to it daily, I follow all the social media stuff and read the book. I love it.

Commemorative 50p coins - I can't resist them. Findong one in my change makes my day.

Game Of Thrones/Buffy/ER/The Wire because every time a new series came out I re-watched all the previous ones. And then again with Buffy.

Regency/Napoleonic novels. Austen, obviously. Georgette Heyer, Sharpe novels, Patrick O'Brian books, Temeraire series... I can't get enough of them.

StroppyWoman · 07/11/2019 19:45

As an aside, I think worshipping at the altar of stationery is completely normal.

GenevaMaybe · 07/11/2019 19:47

I am a weather geek. Bleddy love it. I look at the models and forecast runs and what have you.
I also love words. New words, strange words, obsolete words. Love collecting them up and storing them in my brain where practical things should be.

SlightlyStaleCocoPops · 07/11/2019 19:48

Video games (which I know in the eyes of MN this makes me an unloveable woman-child who is destined to die alone) especially Nintendo. I have a huge collection of Mario stuff and a Legend of Zelda tattoo. I met Charles Martinet (the voice of Mario) at Comicon in September and I've never been so starstruck in my life!

TroysMammy · 07/11/2019 19:52

Picture postcards someone has given me, they don't have to be posted. I've got loads, started collecting when I was about 10 so 41 years of postcards. I've got them in a box and have categorised them alphabetically.

DoubleNegativePanda · 07/11/2019 19:53

I've got quite a few nerdy things about me, but the ones that get me the most confused looks are:

Dental billing coding. I get genuinely excited when I find new/better ways to code procedures. I've also been known to audibly woop and fist pump when I get a payment from an insurance company that's been particularly disagreeable about a claim. I got a payment for $750 dollars a couple weeks ago that was especially thrilling because I'd been fighting tooth and nail since January with the insurance company to make them pay for a patient's crown. Tomorrow I'm going to a cross-coding seminar...

The other thing I geek out about is yarn and knitting patterns. I just bought this stripey yarn and I can't wait for it to get here.

Phineyj · 07/11/2019 19:54

I collect words. I'm always thrilled when I read a book and find new ones. There were two I hadn't seen before in the latest Philip Pullman and I've just learnt 'elate' and 'emulous' from a Walt Whitman poem.

SapphireSeptember · 07/11/2019 19:56

@MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe

I didn't know about that! I've just watched a YouTube vid about the last ones going into Paddington and felt a little teary. Where I am we've had electric trains for years (and now have the very sparse almost Tube like Thameslink ones, .)

Although I now wonder what it would be like being in one of those little Tube trains alongside one of the big trains. Grin

SapphireSeptember · 07/11/2019 19:57

@lotusbell Ooh, thank you! I'll look out for that. Smile

Neverender · 07/11/2019 20:00

I have new matching Method washing up liquid, hand wash and kitchen spray. Using up the old ones so I can display the new ones...tragic!

1forAll74 · 07/11/2019 20:03

I bought three matching porcelain cereal dishes from the charity shop today, they are for my three cats to eat out of, they don't like plastic pet bowls, and neither do I. I got the the three china dishes for 60 pence. The dishes have a small flower pattern round the edges, which the cats might like !

Moominfan · 07/11/2019 20:04

I love Greek mythology. Listen to podcasts retelling stories, books ext.

Collect and sell vintage clothes

Watch YouTube videos on collecting and selling vintage clothes. I'm a terrible reseller though I rarely part with anything Grin

TheFairyCaravan · 07/11/2019 20:06

Flightradar24. We were in Menorca a couple of months ago and while waiting for our return flight some people who recognised us from the outbound journey asked me if I knew if the plane was on time. I piped up "oh, it's landed. I tracked it in!" 😂 The man was, also, a Flightradar geek so it was all good.

Crochet and yarn. I love sorting patterns and my yarn.

DS2(22) is a vintage tools geek. He gets old tools and cleans and restores them. He text me the other day and said he was off up the shed to sharpen his chisels

StroppyWoman · 07/11/2019 20:15

@Phineyj I completely relate to this. THe opportunity to use an obscure word in precisely the right context gives me frisson of joy.

Curlyshabtree · 07/11/2019 20:19

My DS 11 loves slip roads!! Especially the curvy ones.

Ineedanamechange79 · 07/11/2019 20:25

Child's car seats. DS is very tall and heavy for his age so I spent an age researching them.

ZeldaOfHyrule · 07/11/2019 20:36

Games! I love zelda, Mario all the classic Nintendo stuff and a little xbox. I love books too, and any gadget that makes life easier!

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 07/11/2019 20:40

Ohyesiam are you me? I said to dd2 the other night "oooh wow! Look at the moon!" She said, "mummy, you say that every time you see the moon." I guess I do but I love it so much. I also love the seasons. Autumn used to be my favourite but now I can't decide and think I love them all. I can't imagine living somewhere that doesn't have seasons like we do. Ok so we get four seasons in a day at times and the weather does not respect the time of year but I still love it. The night sky has been my source of awe and wonder since childhood. It comforts and amazes me. I also love trees. We live near a wood with huge great beech trees that must be hundreds of years old. They have turned copper now and when the leaves fall and float on the canal it looks like glass art work as though they are floating just under a sheet of glass.

Snoozysnoozy · 07/11/2019 20:42

Also health and safety legislation. I work in regulation industry and there is nothing I get more satisfaction from than carrying out the quarterly office risk assessment and identifying a minor slip/trip/fall hazard that I can enforce control measures on.

I think I've found my arch enemy.

Whiskeylover45 · 07/11/2019 20:44

Organising and tidying up things. Literally, no drawers or cupboards are beyond my reach...

OlaEliza · 07/11/2019 20:49

Steam trains
Canals

FiveFarthings · 07/11/2019 20:49

@PrivateSpidey it’s not a GTech is it? Grin

I love a good map too. I used to pour over my dad's atlas in the back of the car from about age 5. I grew up knowing more road signs than most adults I knew and still do despite the fact I don't drive. I've got a great sense of direction which might be linked but if my body is the wrong way up or round I can't tell which bit is where or move specific parts of told to. This made pole dancing difficult and I gave up despite loving it and being quite good as long as I wasn't inverted.

I love hardware shops and old pharmacies with the old fashioned bottles and drawers. The pharmacy near me is modern but still smells the same as when I was four. I'm fascinated by all the things both type of shop sell.

I strongly suspect I'm on the spectrum and do wonder if my kaleidoscope of a mind has anything to do with my fascinations.
