Yesterday I took delivery of a new handheld cordless mini vacuum and I couldn’t wait for it to charge up so I could go and Hoover my skirting boards without having to drag the massive big Dyson around the house! I was so excited I was going round the house last night looking for things to Hoover up! My husband called me sad but I was so happy!

I also love buying anything new for the kitchen. I bough a multi bladed herb cutter the other day and oh it gave me such pleasure to use it on some parsley for dinner!

When I was at uni I used to love buying matching stationary which some people might think is a bit sad.

I am a married 33-year-old mother of one and this is my life now Grin

What are your nerdy/sad/uncool things in life that bring you excitement/joy?

You're livin' the dream, vulgar!

Musmerian · 09/11/2019 12:08

Collecting children’s books. I was a huge book nerd as a child but they got lost once I left home. I know get them on ebay and in charity shops. Very excited to have just completed my Mantlemass collection. Also other books. Just books.

My maps obsession also extends to spending ages looking on google street view.

I know this was pages back but had to comment.

Me too!

I love Google maps and street view. I spend hours on it. Most recently on a virtual trip to Ulaambaatar. I love how people in the suburbs there sometimes have houses on their plots, sometimes yurts, sometimes both. You always find something interesting on a virtual trip.

TooManyPaws · 09/11/2019 14:47

@stroppywoman have you read Alexander Kent's Bolitho novels? I much prefer them to the Patrick O'Brian ones.

DuggeesWoggle · 09/11/2019 14:56

I haven't read the full thread so may not be the only one here but I bloody love maps. OS especially, the 1:25000 series where you can see the very rock you're sitting on. I love poring over them, planning routes, wondering what places look like. Now we have Google maps with the satellite function I can follow that up with actually looking at the land from above. And then going down to street level. I did a whole satellite tour of America not so long back, followed the Mississippi from mouth to source, went up the west coast, eastern seaboard, everywhere. I think it's mind-blowing technology that we can sit in our homes and zoom in on some obscure part of the globe (albeit not in real time).

I am also a massive jigsaw fan although not much time for that these days with 2 small children. Nothing I like better than watching a crime thriller, glass of red in hand and a 1000 piece jigsaw on the go.

DuggeesWoggle · 09/11/2019 14:58

Posted this and then saw your post Arnold! I do love a virtual tour Grin

SilverOtter · 09/11/2019 15:03

Buying books. The smell of new books is simply👌

Sn0wBa11 · 09/11/2019 15:32

Spreadsheets. I have one which I log everything I spend in and reconcile at the end of the month. I've kept it for years and it almost 10,000 rows now. I had an epic one for my wedding with tabs for different aspects of planning, and an even more complex one for our house move. In fact, I haven't quite been able to say goodbye to that one despite living in the new house for two years now, so have just continued adding tabs for anything vaguely related to the house.

I really do bloody love a good spreadsheet Grin

Loving reading these. I want to see the pond life and microscope slides.

Looking at tents and camping equipment is my favourite thing for making me calm and happy.

Using a kelly kettle has got to be the most satisfying thing ever, so I have now also got a fire pit for more burning stuff opportunities.

testing987654321 · 09/11/2019 15:53

For those who love maps/virtual tours there's a great website called something like geoguessr which plops you down somewhere in the world and you have to work out where.

EleanorReally · 09/11/2019 17:09

I read my google maps timeline, but am quite disappointed when it doesnt recognise fields that i walk through

daisychain01 · 09/11/2019 17:10

@Inexpertjuggler glad you like my Latinising - hey, ampersand is miraculously recognised by my iPad, so I won't bin it just yet Grin

Stationary is my other guilty pleasure (off the back of your comment about wrapping paper @M2B19 ) I have been addicted forever to beautiful greetings cards bought months in advance for birthdays and "just because" moments, notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons and all those lovely stickers out there nowadays in rose gold and duck egg tones

StroppyWoman · 09/11/2019 17:21

@TooManyPaws - no, YAY! a new series to try!
I'll look forward to them.

@Bercowspoliticalpumpkin THANK YOU Grin

Mamabear88 · 09/11/2019 18:13

I bought some new pillows the other week and was super excited when they arrived. I also LOVE the Eurovision song contest, it's literally my favourite night of the year. Judge away!

SleepyKat · 09/11/2019 18:23

I just did geoguessr and was 300 miles from the actual location in rural Brazil which I thought was good going. I darent do it again, have a feeling I’ve peaked early.

confusedmaybe · 09/11/2019 18:28

When my favourite spinner and dyer brings out new yarn. I always have to buy some and then squish it before I knit a small square. This point I never know what the project will be, I just need to see the swatch

amigababy · 09/11/2019 18:32

I love film trailers ( almost more than the actual film) and the Pearl and Dean advert fanfare!

Sn0wBa11 we have one of those, currently on about line 5500, it all then links to a forecasting spreadsheet with our future living costs for the next approx 20 years
( If you don't know where you've been you can't know where you're going)

testing987654321 · 09/11/2019 18:33

300 miles is impressive! I am happy when I get the right continent, there are more plains in the world than I realised.

TheSilveryPussycat · 09/11/2019 21:40

Open train times - has a feed from Network Rail and shows you where all the trains are.

I used to visit a friend who lived right next to a railway line. "The 3pm from Kings Cross should go by in a minute!" I would say, looking up from my tablet. I was not deterred by the fact that nobody in the room gave a toss about this information.

MisfitNinja · 09/11/2019 22:45

New books. I have a kindle (which I use a lot) but nothing comes close to how excited I get being the first person to open a book and I love the smell of them! 🙈

MisfitNinja · 09/11/2019 22:48

Also, every time I see a magpie I have to salute it and say ‘hello Mr. Magpie, hows your lady wife?’ My OH thinks this is particularly strange but a habit I had installed in me by my Nan as one magpie is bad luck unless you acknowledge it apparently. 🙈

SerenDippitty · 09/11/2019 22:56

Kaleidoscopes and flowscopes - so relaxing,
Bookmarks.

Science fiction.
Fungi. The biggest living organism in the world is a fungus 2.4 miles across - imagine that! Mushrooms and toadstools are the fruiting parts of much larger underground organisms.
