Yesterday I took delivery of a new handheld cordless mini vacuum and I couldn’t wait for it to charge up so I could go and Hoover my skirting boards without having to drag the massive big Dyson around the house! I was so excited I was going round the house last night looking for things to Hoover up! My husband called me sad but I was so happy!

I also love buying anything new for the kitchen. I bough a multi bladed herb cutter the other day and oh it gave me such pleasure to use it on some parsley for dinner!

When I was at uni I used to love buying matching stationary which some people might think is a bit sad.

I am a married 33-year-old mother of one and this is my life now Grin

What are your nerdy/sad/uncool things in life that bring you excitement/joy?

An online game called Covet Fashion. You basically dress dolls according to various themes and choose their hair and makeup and all the players score each other’s looks. I play it religiously every day and am a member of several Facebook groups discussing it. I’m 41 Grin

Geocaching. Me and dh are doing a massive loop on Saturday and I CAN'T WAIT.

LikeARedBalloon · 07/11/2019 16:38

I play this, you should see the state of my own hair and wardrobe, nobody would ever guess I’d play a game like that 😂

Compost AND making reusable sanitary pads.

KilljoysDutch · 07/11/2019 16:49

Crafting stuff and Stationery (Thank you aliexpress!)
My stick insects (All named Dave)
Journalling everything (I have one for movies/tv shows and one for books) decorating them with my stationery is the best bit.

Flat pack furniture.

I love it. It's like a giant, 3-D jigsaw puzzle. I do all the flat pack assembly in my family, and sometimes for friends, even done some for neighbours.

Also maps. I love a good map. Old maps, modern maps, geographic maps, political maps, road maps, rainfall maps, maps of other planets, doesn't matter really.

(I also have a thing about cannibalism but that's probably weird rather than nerdy)

SynchroSwimmer · 07/11/2019 16:52

If I see anything killed on the roadside i feel I have to reverse up and take it home, to give it a proper resting place (when it’s safe to stop, but sometimes it turns out just to be a plastic bag) 😂

Also can’t walk past the faux-fur blankets in T K Maxx without feeling obliged to give them a good home (currently on number 5)

timeforawine · 07/11/2019 16:55

@Georgenord Can you explain Covet Fashion? I have downloaded it, does it cost me anything??

species5618 · 07/11/2019 16:55

I love nothing better than settling in for an evening to format my hard drive, re-loading Windows and applying all my little tweaks.
Ummmmm .... geek heaven!

MrsBlobbys · 07/11/2019 16:58

I used to love wheelbarrows, I used to play with one when I was young but it had a flat I feel deprived Grin

DH won’t let me get a wheelbarrow I’d be in the garden all day & night playing with it. I’m 30 btw Grin

Greek mythology.
Ecology and evolution.
Jigsaw puzzles.

Dh laughs at me for being a "nerd" when he's a "jock" (tongue in cheek - he works in ITGrin)

tinofbeans · 07/11/2019 17:15

I collect tents Smile absolutely love them, spend hours researching new tents - size, weight, hydrostatic head etc. I also collect all the paraphernalia that goes with tents. My family think I'm barmy.

Also I really enjoy studying maps Smile

Anime. And cleaning products. Love getting a new sponge for the dishes Hmm

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 07/11/2019 17:24

Hieroglyphics. Started trying to learn to read them for fun some time ago and am now, well, obsessed with the topic.

countdowntonap · 07/11/2019 17:27

Foreign Office website updates. I think I’ve read the page for every country in the world. Fascinating!!!

PrivateSpidey · 07/11/2019 17:27

I get you on the mini hoover OP. We've got one and the first thing I hoovered was a load of Weetabix crumbs at the back of the cupboard. It cut a swathe through them like something off an advert, it was amazing and so satisfying!!

I geek out over old (black and white) films and the actors/actresses who were in them, as well as murder mysteries (books and TV programmes).

I also love old comics, v intrigued by the PP mentioning Captain America.

I like a bit of the old friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man myself. Peter Parker is such a great character.

Inebriati · 07/11/2019 17:30

Optical illusions.
Physics accounts on Instagram.
Greek machines.

MarshaBradyo · 07/11/2019 17:32

Probably doesn’t quite fit although does as I’m seeing it on Instagram rather than surfing them, but people surfing huge waves.

I cannot believe how big some are and that they do it.

iCrochetSoIDontKillPeople · 07/11/2019 17:33

Crochet Grin

MogThoughtDarkThoughts · 07/11/2019 17:34

I've just bought a hotbin composter and can't wait to get started! If I didn't have a baby asleep on me right now I would totally be out in the garden gathering twigs for the base.

MogThoughtDarkThoughts · 07/11/2019 17:36

Also, another vote for Excel spreadsheets. I love working out ways to automate really boring tasks.

bellinisurge · 07/11/2019 17:36

@MogThoughtDarkThoughts , I cut up old cotton knickers and they magically became compost. It's a calling 😂😂😂

shas19 · 07/11/2019 17:38

a new dish sponge😂😍

afternoonspray · 07/11/2019 17:39

suspension bridges. I would go out of my way to see one, walk on it, walk near it to gaze at it. They are objects of beauty that leave me breathless with geeky admiration. There's something about that combination of function, aesthetic and engineering.

Notebooks. I can;t pass a shop that sells them.
