To be absolutely livid with Amazon for this

I am not really AIBU as I know I am not but I need to vent.

I ordered an Occulus Virtual reality gift set for Christmas via Amazon Prime. It arrived yesterday or rather it didn't. My DD BF accepted delivery and the driver asked him to open the package as he said it was a delayed delivery and he needed to check what was inside it!

My DDs BF didn't know what I had ordered, just that I was expecting a delivery...Anyway just come back from a weeked away to discover instead of my £400 gift it was 3 bags of sugar! I am going to send it back but wont they query 3 bags of sugar when the label says its an Occulus headset!

I am so cross and holding on the line to them.

Why would the driver insist it was opened and do you think he has taken it and substituted it for the sugar!

I dunno, I mean I agree the bf is looking shady as all get out, but I'm gonna say that the OP is the one on the make from Amazon who are refunding for a delivery that, as far as we can all tell, was made perfectly satisfactorily.

SoupDragon · 03/11/2019 17:51

I'm gonna say that the OP is the one on the make from Amazon who are refunding for a delivery that, as far as we can all tell, was made perfectly satisfactorily.

It didn't arrive in the OP's hands "perfectly satisfactorily" did it? There's no way of telling where it was switched so no, we can't tell anything from what has been posted here.

Loz90333 · 03/11/2019 17:57

OP, I work for Amazon as a delivery driver and I've never been asked to do this!!!

BringMeAGinandTonic · 03/11/2019 17:57

Yes, you can buy sugar on Amazon. :)

It is possible the sugar was already in the Oculus box, but the fact the delivery was late and the bf had to check it, makes me think it might not be this, but people buy expensive stuff on Amazon and thenreturn it, putting the same weight in bricks/dirt/whatever in its place. They get the item and refund. Someone was caught doing this recently in Spain.

Amazon are usually pretty good at sorting problems

Very odd to be asked to open a package though. That bit makes no sense

mummyof2ds · 03/11/2019 18:31

My dp is a amazon delivery and has never asked anybody to open there package

LoveNote · 03/11/2019 19:34

Lol at us all being deleted for having doubts’

It’s all a mystery that’s for sure!

wineisnecessary · 03/11/2019 19:41

@LoveNote I know . I've seen people be really horrible on threads goading etc and they are not deleted but someone suggests this is a bit fishy and it gets deleted.
The op has a least 2 other threads I know of and quite similar.

NoSquirrels · 04/11/2019 11:20

Definitely not DD bf who took it

How do you know, OP?

Weird thread to start and then give no more information at all!

oreomum · 04/11/2019 11:28

I've never been asked to open an Amazon package and have ordered 1000+ packages. I had one who was worried the contents were broken but he was relieved to hear that it was a Lego set hence the sound the package made.

Amazon sell groceries (Amazon fresh) for the detectives out there.

Jupiters · 04/11/2019 12:15

I do Amazon deliveries...the driver has no idea what is in the parcels. The only slight clue we get is if there is an age restricted product inside, as it comes up with a note to say you need to see ID.
Also we never get people to open parcels up?! As it's a fixed payment no matter how long it takes the goal is to get all the parcels delivered asap, no faffing about. Something doesn't add up.

IamWaggingBrenda · 04/11/2019 12:54

Sounds like your DDs BF took it. If the driver was pulling a fast one, why on Earth would he want the recipient to check the package? That would catch him out. He’d be far more inclined to deliver the package and leave as quickly as possible. My money’s on the BF having stolen the item and blaming Amazon.

melj1213 · 04/11/2019 13:01

The only time I have ever opened a package on the doorstep is when the packaging was severely damaged/ripped and the item was intended as a present so wanted to check it was intact.

RockinHippy · 04/11/2019 13:12

Mmm, very odd. I'd be questioning how trustworthy the BF is.

Amazon does have an issue with thieving, we've had issues ourselves, but this is a whole new level of devious & from our experience I doubt drivers need to go to that much effort to steal

OneForMeToo · 04/11/2019 13:12

Food items normally come in amazon pantry boxes.

I reckon the bf.

Bluntness100 · 04/11/2019 13:16

That's bullshit, Amazon don't ask you to open packages to verify contents, either the boyfriend has opened it, nicked the contents, and added the sugar, or you have to try to get it for free.

If the Amazon man was on the rob he'd not ask it to be opened. He'd dump and run. So either you or the boyfriend are on the take.

No offence.i don't know you , so it's not personal.

LifeSpectator · 04/11/2019 13:19

i was once asked actually he didnt ask he suggested i might want to open a delivery, while he was there, as it very clearly said box 1 of 2 but he didnt have a box 2 for me, and the delivery note had a list of items and he said he was not sure that the delivery note was just for the box i had, if it was missing items i would not want to sign the delivery note it items were missing but could cross if what was not in box, he did say if i didnt want to open then he woiuld put a note on records anyway that delivery note was for one box only

safariboot · 04/11/2019 13:50

My 2 pence.

Scenario 1. BF has opened parcel, stolen item, replaced with sugar because otherwise you'd ask "How didn't you notice it was empty". Then he's realised he can't reseal the box without it being obvious so he's concocted the story about the driver.

Scenario 2. As others have mentioned. Fraudster ordered item, returned parcel of equal-weight junk. Amazon have not checked return and have reshipped it. Driver asking for parcel to be checked is for unrelated reasons.

Those I think are the two most likely options. I don't see why the driver themselves would have stolen then drawn attention to it, and Amazon warehouse staff have little opportunity to steal. (They're searched at the end of every shift IIRC).

safariboot · 04/11/2019 13:56

PS: I wonder if Amazon record serial numbers for stuff like this. If BF has stolen the VR headset to use it might "activate" with Oculus. If he's stolen it to sell, the local pawn shops could be alerted to it. But that's only if Amazon do have the SN.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/11/2019 14:08

I also had 45 toilet rolls get misplaced at the depot

I'm just wondering if 9 very unhappy customers didn't receive the iPads they'd ordered....

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/11/2019 14:14

If it was the boyfriend and he had to nip to the shops to get the sugar anyway, why didn't he also get a roll of cheap parcel tape, seal it up again and then just nonchalantly say "Oh, a parcel came for you - it's on the table in the hallway" without making up any elaborate and unlikely stories?

Then, when you open it, find the sugar and are flummoxed, he can quite easily share in your puzzlement and say that was how it came - he just signed for it, took it and put it straight on the table.

TheQueef · 04/11/2019 14:15

You need to shop on the high st OP.
Either you are particularly unlucky or someone DDBF is using social engineering to scam Amazon.
You will end up with your account closed.

Athers666 · 04/11/2019 14:17

I got asked to open up an Amazon package last week by the delivery driver. The box had come open a bit so he got me to open it up fully and check the contents were undamaged so it does happen occasionally.

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 04/11/2019 14:19

Independent sellers sell through amazon. It's entirely plausible that OP bought from a dodgy seller, there are LOADS of cons like this.
