AIBU to get my friend to buy me a horse?

horsesarebest · 27/10/2019 09:13

I've NC as it's a very outing problem.

I love horses and want a horse, but can't afford it because I'm a SAHM. My friend, who currently has lots of disposable income, can afford to buy it for me because she's just sold her house. AIBU to ask her to loan me the money so that I can get a horse? It's not an insignificant amount (4 figures), but buying a horse is an opportunity that may not come along for me again because I'll be able to keep it in a field that is close to my home that I can rent really cheaply.

I have no idea when I'd be able to pay my friend back, but I would be able to afford to look after the horse providing that I didn't get any unexpected expenses and the feed costs weren't too high.

I never had a horse before and don't ride very well, but instead of having lessons, it would mean that I can put my money in to a) having a horse and b) I can learn on the horse and have more "horsey time" and so learn quicker.

DH is against the idea, because we're going in to winter and he thinks that I spend too much of his money having riding lessons as it is. He has told me to get a job and use the money from that, because he's not funding it. To be fair to DH, I'm a SAHM and he already gives me a reasonable allowance of £200/month, but it won't cover the costs of buying and keeping the horse.

Me getting a job is not reasonable because DH is a workaholic who regularly works 60+ hours a week and I have to pick up the slack at home with child care and school runs. I have no idea how much he actually earns, but it is enough to pay for and keep a horse without asking my friend for a loan. DH just won't entertain it.

Friend can afford to lend me the money because like I said, she's just sold her house.

I’d get her to spring for more than one. You could have a string of polo ponies and you’ll likely be able to meet royal people too. DH is just not a visionary on the sheer amount of opportunities this enterprise could open up. Your DC might even marry a royal person!!!

MyKingdomForBrie · 27/10/2019 10:37

I would tell your friend her DH is financially abusive.

katewhinesalot · 27/10/2019 10:37

But you've got loads of money now you've sold your house. A true friend would lend her some money. Sure she'll pay you back, after all, she can afford it if there are no unexpected expenses.

Go on, give her your life savings. Meanie.

stucknoue · 27/10/2019 10:39

Seriously? If you can't afford to buy the horse you can't afford to keep it, it's hundred a month on food, insurance, stabling, equipment, shoes etc. My friend recons gets costs £400 if he's well!

Foslady · 27/10/2019 10:42

Ah bless - one last blast before half term ends?!!!
Either that or Dave Gorman!!!!

FizzyGreenWater · 27/10/2019 10:42

Trust me, it's true

Way to make yourself unpopular OP.

I've changed my mind - you're clearly planning to be really mean to her by whipping up a fake thread full of people saying mean things. So I decree that you're too mean to deserve your house money and you should buy your poor friend with the financially abusive DH a BIG HORSE.

BanKittenHeels · 27/10/2019 10:47

Does your friend have MN?

If so I think you would be unreasonable not to ask her for a horse. In fact, I have a day off tomorrow, so if you could do it now so I have something to read that would be great.

Thanks.

JustLikeJasper · 27/10/2019 10:48

@horsesarebest you didnt even know what a reverse was in your other stupid post yesterday.. stop wasting people's time 🙄

Cherrysoup · 27/10/2019 10:49

Remind idiot friend that bills can be sky high, hay bills double in winter, insurance runs out after £5k on most policies) one of my vet bills away over £8k).

Unbelievable that she asked you this. So batshit.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 10:59

Why are MNHQ now posting on stupid threads to point out they're a reverse?

Just delete them and hopefully that'll stop this crap.

Confusedbeetle · 27/10/2019 11:01

What a load of.....

Can you see the MNHQ comments, @worraliberty?

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 11:03

Yes Butchy, they've added a message to the last line of the OP.

Can you see the MNHQ comments

MN has commented in bold at the bottom of the OP's first post. Took the fun out of it, in my opinion Grin

The reverse was silly and unnecessary (and blindingly obvious).

Butchyrestingface · 27/10/2019 11:08

Yes Butchy, they've added a message to the last line of the OP.

Thank you SO FUCKING MUCH. Flowers

It was driving me MAAAAD that I couldn't find it. Grin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 27/10/2019 11:08

The reverse threads should have their thread title edited to indicate it is one then people don’t waste time even reading the first post if they don’t want to.

Joerev · 27/10/2019 11:08

Umm. I’ve had horses all my life

You got money for rugs? Feed? Shoeing? Vets? Bute? Worming?

My horse was £800 a month for a year before she died with the medication she had to have. £70 every 8 weeks for shoes. £40 every 8 weeks for hay. £250 for rugs each couple of years

Trust me. If you don’t have money spare. Do not buy the horse

You won’t be able to look after it. It’s not just throwing it in a cheap field. What if it gets worms?

Do you know how they get colic? Do you know what ragwort is?!? What bridle. What saddle?

What medication each year do you need?

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 11:08

The thing is, the talk guidelines say this...

'No trolling, misleading or deliberately inflammatory behaviour'

So I don't understand why in effect, they're making it easier for OPs to do it.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 11:09

I spotted it by accident Butchy but I'll claim the flowers anyway Grin

Maneandfeathers · 27/10/2019 11:11

I have some horses.

Honestly they are a pain in the arse. I would tell anyone about to get into it to think again Grin

Joerev · 27/10/2019 11:15

Are you ready for no holidays?!? It’s not like a cat. You need someone who knows Horses to look after it if you do. Those come at a cost of about £200 per week you are away

Dental fees. You know how to rasp?!? If not. That’s £100 each 6 weeks or so

You know medically what can go wrong? If it gets kicked? Rips it skin on the field. Which they all bloody do!!!

You know what bit to use?

What happens if a shoe come off and pierces it’s muscle?

Jesus Christ on a bike. If you can’t afford £200 per month to pay it back

If you can’t ride. This horse will take you for a mug.

What type of horse is it? Is it a hardy breed if you’re sticking it in a field?!?

WineGummyBear · 27/10/2019 11:15

**The thing is, the talk guidelines say this...

'No trolling, misleading or deliberately inflammatory behaviour'*

'reverse' threads are really tedious.

KurriKurri · 27/10/2019 11:17

Saying “Horsey” every time you pass one in a field isn’t a hobby

Grin

It sounds like one of those MN outing 'hobbies' that people have, but must never say what they are.

EL8888 · 27/10/2019 11:17

Your friend is an impressively big CF. Who asks people to buy a house for them?!

ememem84 · 27/10/2019 11:22

Buy me a horse op. I can actually ride. Dh is a meanie and won’t let me spend my belated earned money on a horse. But if you buy one for me that’s the initial outlay done.

Then I’d need to find the time to look after it and the time to ride it more than the once a week I currently ride..::
