AIBU to get my friend to buy me a horse?

horsesarebest · 27/10/2019 09:13

I've NC as it's a very outing problem.

I love horses and want a horse, but can't afford it because I'm a SAHM. My friend, who currently has lots of disposable income, can afford to buy it for me because she's just sold her house. AIBU to ask her to loan me the money so that I can get a horse? It's not an insignificant amount (4 figures), but buying a horse is an opportunity that may not come along for me again because I'll be able to keep it in a field that is close to my home that I can rent really cheaply.

I have no idea when I'd be able to pay my friend back, but I would be able to afford to look after the horse providing that I didn't get any unexpected expenses and the feed costs weren't too high.

I never had a horse before and don't ride very well, but instead of having lessons, it would mean that I can put my money in to a) having a horse and b) I can learn on the horse and have more "horsey time" and so learn quicker.

DH is against the idea, because we're going in to winter and he thinks that I spend too much of his money having riding lessons as it is. He has told me to get a job and use the money from that, because he's not funding it. To be fair to DH, I'm a SAHM and he already gives me a reasonable allowance of £200/month, but it won't cover the costs of buying and keeping the horse.

Me getting a job is not reasonable because DH is a workaholic who regularly works 60+ hours a week and I have to pick up the slack at home with child care and school runs. I have no idea how much he actually earns, but it is enough to pay for and keep a horse without asking my friend for a loan. DH just won't entertain it.

Friend can afford to lend me the money because like I said, she's just sold her house.

Sounds like a plan.

Could you check out if she could sub me for my next holiday too please?

OrangeHue · 27/10/2019 10:12

This poster is being divisive to get a raise out of mumsnet.. let’s not respond..

Kolo · 27/10/2019 10:13

Saying “Horsey” every time you pass one in a field isn’t a hobby

Oysterbabe · 27/10/2019 10:14

It was so obviously a reverse and I hate them with the power of a thousand suns. Therefore Yabu and if I were mumsnet overlord you would be banned. You should buy her a horse as punishment.

PennyNotSoWise · 27/10/2019 10:14

How fucking cheeky your friend is! Shock I think the responses would have been the same if you hadn't done a reverse tbh. Writing it like that made people think you were a troll.

Btw, why does it say MNHQ have commented on the thread but they haven't? Confused Is anyone else seeing that?

greypetex · 27/10/2019 10:16

I'm glad it's not just me. Reverses are goady.

TheNinkiestNonk · 27/10/2019 10:17

Ahhhh is you are actually the friend that has just sold her house and therefore has lots of money? Yeah, I need a holiday to the Maldives please

Scrumptiousbears · 27/10/2019 10:18

FFS

MrTumblePulledAKnifeOnMe · 27/10/2019 10:19

PennyNotSoWise I'm seeing it too

leckford · 27/10/2019 10:20

Sadly there are people in real life who do this and the poor horse suffers

Polkadotties · 27/10/2019 10:20

Tell your friend that you aren’t going to buy her a horse but after researching you now want one and will buy one Grin

CopperTrolley · 27/10/2019 10:21

I’m also seeing the message about MN have commented - but no comment.

Butchyrestingface · 27/10/2019 10:22

Yes, I can see the message about comments but no comments.

I hate being teased like this. 😥

notthemum · 27/10/2019 10:23

@horsesarebest.
Haha. Your "friend is bloody nuts".
If you are feeling very generous The Works are selling hobby horses for a tenner, they even neigh.
Anyway now that I am your new BFF I've as always fancied owning an elephant oh and some big cats. In fact I'd quite like a zoo.
Any chance ?

Noooodles · 27/10/2019 10:23

How can you ever pay her if you don’t have any income? Aside from that you aren’t aware of the time and effort to keep horses. If you don’t have enough time for a job you don’t have enough time for a horse.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/10/2019 10:23

It was so obviously a reverse. Why not just post from your own perspective.

Teacakeandalatte · 27/10/2019 10:24

Why do a reverse? A normal CF thread would be much better. I mean you can't show your friend this thread and keep her friendship. If you aren't bothered about that, then just say neigh, neigh and thrice neigh.

Wheat2Harvest · 27/10/2019 10:26

This can't be a serious post, surely?

No-one would have that much sense of entitlement unless there was something not quite right about them.

MintyT · 27/10/2019 10:26

Go an volunteer at the stables and ride there

Myimaginaryfamiliarhasfleas · 27/10/2019 10:27

I don't blame the OP for "reversing", I think in this case she got exactly the response she needed to show the friend.

I think sibling though. Surely no friend would be that daft?

Horsesarebest · 27/10/2019 10:28

Polkadotties I already have 19 of them! Difference compared to CF friend is that I breed them for a living!

I think that CF friend thought it a viable option because she knows I have a couple of brood mares on lease. Difference between me and her is, that there I have very hefty legally binding breeding contracts in place, and I have the finances, proper facilities and the knowledge to know exactly what I am doing!

FurrySlipperBoots · 27/10/2019 10:29

Of course YANBU! But I wouldn't just settle for a horse. Do you have your own pool yet? If not I reckon your friend could probably afford for you to have one built. Also, boats and fast cars are good, so drop some hints there too!

bluebluezoo · 27/10/2019 10:30

The vet has to do the hooves every 6 weeks

No, a farrier does the hooves, not a vet.

Farriers, especially good ones, are like hen’s teeth and are priced accordingly.

testingtesting111 · 27/10/2019 10:31

@horsesarebest I'd be distancing myself from this "friend" moving forward.

lunar1 · 27/10/2019 10:35

I wouldn't even answer her, how bloody cheeky!
