Or any terrifying TV shows would also be good. Thanks in advance!

Les Diaboliques. It's a French film ( I saw it with English subtitles ) , black and white, and made in the 1950's. It isn't by Hitchcock but a lot of comparisons with Hitchcock have been made .

VeganCow · 27/10/2019 23:28

@RandomAmanda yes Buried was so good. Don’t watch if you’re claustrophobic though!

MissLadyM · 27/10/2019 23:49

@secret I bet you saw the Alfred Hitchcock Presents...There was a terrifying story where the prisoner made friends with the chaplain and he was going to help her escape by getting in the coffin with a corpse. She did it but used a lighter to see she was in a coffin with him!!!! Shitted me up for years!

I liked horror films when the meant “scary” as opposed to horrible.

Where’s the pleasure in watching people being skinned alive? Especially knowing that somewhere in the world right now it’s probably happening to someone in real life.
Much better IMO to watch films about stuff you know isn’t true like ghosts or demons or weird unspeakable events that suspend your belief.

I like both versions of the Ring. I think the US one does a better job of portraying the girl as actually evil. The orginal is visually better but you end up feeling a bit sorry for her.
Also like Woman in Black, the Others, Event Horizon and Silent Hill the film. I like a miserable ending!

If you can find it ‘Don’t go to Sleep’ is a film starring Valerie Harper. I watched it 35 years ago and have never seen it since and don’t want to. It frightened me to bloody death!!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/10/2019 01:12

Don’t go to sleep is on YouTube. Excellent movie but very unheard of.

FadingStar · 28/10/2019 07:21

Augustus I think I watched it the same time as you. ITV had a series of films they showed on Saturday night back in the early eighties under a title of Murder, Mystery, Suspense. Don't Go To Sleep was one of them...do you remember the part with the pizza cutter?

Trewser · 28/10/2019 07:25

Inside no 9 with Sheridan smith is called the 12 days of Christine and I've never cried so much at a tv show. Proper ugly crying. It's bloody brilliant.

BrexitThroughTheGiftShop · 28/10/2019 10:18

Alfred Hitchcock's Unlocked Window is pretty good.

You can watch it on line. This is the black and white version:

This is a colour 1985 updated "Alfred Hitchcock presents" version which is here but split into sections:

I watched Train To Busan on the strength of this thread. Really, very, very good. Not scary enough to keep me up at night but a great zombie movie all the same. Right up there with 28 Days later and World War Z.

Trewser · 28/10/2019 10:20

Yeah i really enjoyed train to busan

AgentCooper · 28/10/2019 10:23

Wolf Creek is the only film I’ve nearly walked out of, I found it so horrible.

It Follows is brilliant, really creepy. Us is good too. The Orphanage I found really scary but bloody heartbreaking. Don’t think I could watch it again now I have DS.

ChanandlerBongIsHere · 28/10/2019 10:43

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it already, but A Serbian Film is up there with one of the worst films I've ever had to digest. And by worst, I mean gut wrenching, could barely watch, left my skin crawling for days afterwards.

There are hundreds of horror/psychological movies I'll happily watch over and over, but A Serbian Film is one of those 'ok I've seen it now. Never it again' kinda movies.

Trewser · 28/10/2019 10:46

It has been mentioned. I would not recommend it to anyone!

gamerchick · 28/10/2019 12:57

A Serbian Film isn't meant to be scary. It was made as an experiment and to make a powerful point about the world we live in. The full point wasn't made because of the cut scenes.

That said, I don't do child rape. I dont mind looking deeper under the surface to see what kind of message is sent by the writer as most of us just look on the surface and want the film to do the work for them. But, I don't want to be totally consumed by someone else's mental state of mind and feelings.

Redlioness123 · 28/10/2019 16:32

I've just seen today that the trailer for Grudge (2020) has been released

LoisEinhorn · 28/10/2019 16:46

I agree with Dead of Night, The Grudge, Grave Encounters.
Hush is very good.

LoisEinhorn · 28/10/2019 16:48

Sceam of Fear is very creepy. It's an old black and white film

coffeeagogo · 28/10/2019 16:51

Event horizon scared the pants off me - even now. Years later it makes me feel uneasy to even remember watching it

TheGlitterFairy · 28/10/2019 16:58

Haven’t read the whole thread but some eg The Ring have been mentioned. The Amityville Horrors used to scare me silly; still so now many years later thinking about it!! Watched “It” chapter one recently too - have seen the original years ago and still made me jump. Wanting to see chapter two!

FrankieDoyle · 28/10/2019 17:12

I'm a massive horror fan and not a lot scares me in terms of movies.

These films frightened me to death the first time I watched them:

The Grudge 1 and 2
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
28 Days Later
Hell House
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
The Tunnel
The Evil Dead

OmniversalsTapdancingTadpole · 28/10/2019 17:16

Ted Bundy, this film scared me so much, in that you would not see this man coming, it quite literally could happen to anyone, being a victim of a person like him.

I love horror, but can not watch films such as saw, hostel etc as i know that this type of torture does happen. Give me a good vampire or ghost story anytime.

dayslikethese1 · 28/10/2019 17:58

Have seen most of the films mentioned. Have come to the conclusion that most films don't scare me though I do love horror. Some films are just horrible though and leave a bad taste in your mouth and I would put Wolf Creek and The Vanishing into that category.

dayslikethese1 · 28/10/2019 17:59

I agree that there's too much CGI in a lot of mainstream American horrors, it kind of ruins it for me a bit.

Trewser · 28/10/2019 19:51

Yes I understand why they justified making A serbian film. It's still fricking awful.
