Or any terrifying TV shows would also be good. Thanks in advance!

Surprised nobody's mentioned Oculus; it's by the same director as Hush, Gerald's Game and the Haunting of Hill House. I've watched it a couple of times and it really stuck with me.

bringbacksideburns · 26/10/2019 18:44

Interesting how every one finds different things scary.

I really don't do Horror. I'm a total wuss and had to be forewarned about the jump scares in The Haunting of Hill House before I watched it,
but i didn't think The Babbadook was that scary.

Yes to Salem' s lot as a teen though. The tapping at the window and " Please let me in". It's stayed with me thirty plus years later.!
And Black Christmas. Me and my friend watched that alone in the house and had to switch it off we were so scared.

Remember watching Hellraiser from being a cushion. I was so tense! How do people enjoy this sort of thing?

The Vanishing is supposed to be based on a French film that's much better I believe. I really should get round to watching it.

I Want to watch a film tonight but one that's chilling rather than gory.

FadingStar · 26/10/2019 18:45

The original Salem's Lot holds up very well. I've been a horror fan for decades and have seen so many they rarely scare me. But I watched it a few weeks ago - hadn't seen it since it was shown on BBC1 back in 1981, and I was really scared! It is very atmospheric. Starts off slow but I liked that the build up was really intense.

Also agree with My Little Eye. Very scary, very tense and so underrated.

FadingStar · 26/10/2019 18:48

Sime PPs said that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is gory but it isn't gory at all - you see very little blood. The director Tobe Hooper was trying to avoid an R/X rating. But it is really effective because you don't see much...you have to imagine it.

Christ, I wish I'd never mentioned this thread to my husband! He wanted to watch Wolf Creek last night but I plied him with a couple of glasses of wine and he fell asleep. Thought he'd forgotten about it but no, he wants to watch it tonight. He's asking me about other movies that have been mentioned on here but I'm turning a deaf ear.

FadingStar · 26/10/2019 18:49

Wolf Creek is more of a difficult watch than a scary one I think. I didn't enjoy it at all. Found it heartbreaking and unpleasant.

nononever · 26/10/2019 18:51

Gore doesn't bother me, have seen many unfortunate photos of the real thing but I cannot do supernatural. I couldn't watch the Haunting of Hill House, we had to put if off. I'm an involuntary shrieker when watching scary movies which apparently is scarier than any movie.

FadingStar · 26/10/2019 18:53

😂😂😂 I think you sound like a fun person to watch horror with. You would add to the scares.

Yes, very much my thoughts, extremely disturbing. I thought it was like watching a real life event, not that I finished watching it.

FadingStar · 26/10/2019 18:56

Yes, completely concur. It was pretty horrible. I like movies where there is hope at the end, not depressing the hell out of you.

Years ago I was talked into going to the cinema to see some vampire movie. Started off okay and then bam, big scary bit and I screamed and gave the man sitting next to me the fright of his life, he spilled a giant cup of coke all over himself. I was mortified. Thankfully he was very nice about it.

Blahdyblahblahblah · 26/10/2019 19:00

Another vote for sinister, and The haunting of Hill House.
The new pet semetary is quite scary too.

Haha poor guy. He won't forget you in a hurry! I must watch this Haunting of Hill House posters are recommending...sounds right up my street!

dayswithaY · 26/10/2019 19:13

There's a film from the 80s called something like The Reincarnation of Audrey Rose with Anthony Hopkins. Not the same as Emily Rose. It has stuck in my mind. The Omen is a genuinely creepy film too.

WhisperingPines · 26/10/2019 19:16

Within the horror genre I do think the 'old' (pre-1970s) horror movies are the best.

Same goes for sci-fi films (well maybe except for Star Wars).

WhisperingPines · 26/10/2019 19:17

And some Hitchcock films too.

Rear Window, Psycho, The Birds, etc.

dayswithaY · 26/10/2019 19:18

Just found out Audrey Rose is on Netflix. I won't be watching it!

madeyemoodysmum · 26/10/2019 19:22

I’m more of a thriller girl.
Love silence of the lambs
Cape fear
The woman in black

I prefer to imagine the terror rather than actually see it.

I really enjoyed it2 which surprised me. Funny camp scares but a good story and I wasn’t bored at all.

Baxterbear · 26/10/2019 19:35

One film that had me jumping out of my skin and freaking me out is the 2017 British film Ghost Stories! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Stories_(2017_film)
It's well worth a watch on a dark winter night!!!

Baxterbear · 26/10/2019 19:43

If you want a film that will traumatise you and leave you shaken to your core then watch (or try to!) A Serbian Film 2010. This film will leave you shocked, appalled and questioning humanity. Be warned though, this film can NEVER be unwatched and will 100% mentally scar you. It is subtitled but I promise that it will effect you......

That is more my cup of tea.

Jagged Edge made me scared of the noise of wind chimes!

LaBarbera · 26/10/2019 19:56

@Feilin, that must have been an adaptation of the M R James story Lost Hearts. I haven't seen it, but the story itself absolutely shits me up (love MRJ so much).

FedUpMum40 · 26/10/2019 19:57

Haunting on/of hill house, had to keep checking my pulse

nononever · 26/10/2019 19:57

If you want a film that will traumatise you and leave you shaken to your core

That sounds utterly horrendous, no way could I watch that.

Vegena · 26/10/2019 20:15

@Baxterbear I just YouTubed the Siberian Film....

I am traumatised from that alone. Couldn’t get passed the baby scene 😭😭😭😭😭
