"Next time I see it I'm burning it"

So I have this tshirt thats actually from quite a posh brand, it's a grey tshirt made from a really soft drapey cotton and it's dark grey and loose. I love the feel of it and how it moves, it's quite baggy and I wear it round the house.

Theres just one problem which is I left it outside in the garden for a whole winter and when I finally moved myself and brought it in last spring or something obviously I washed it, but now not only does it have a few (very small) holes on it, the fabric is damaged and staind kind of on the front almost like its rusted (if fabric could rust).

So anyway the other day I'm sitting around in it. DP has seen me wear it around before but this time he said "seriously can you not just buy another basic grey lounging tshirt? Next time I see it I'm burning it!"

Kinda lighthearted but where do you stand on wearing decrepit clothing?

OP posts:
pigsknickers · 25/10/2019 13:17

I'm a lazy bastard too, I would totally do this. What does "darked on" mean though?!

category12 · 25/10/2019 13:17

I'm struggling to understand the disgust. It's been washed, what exactly is the problem?

If you like it, you like it, OP. My favourite jumper is over 20 years old and holey. Obviously I'm not wearing it out anywhere, but it's still operational as a garment.

MrsSpenserGregson · 25/10/2019 13:19

** You left a t shirt outside for months and then you just washed it and wore it ?

How do you think we get wool jumpers?**

EXACTLY

NoSquirrels · 25/10/2019 13:21

I left it outside in the garden for a whole winter
My washing is currently being rained on, but an entire winter is something else.

Then I read it was on the decking. Bleurgh! I know you said you didn't think the rain would harm it - but didn't you think it would start going mouldy/decomposing?
When you picked it up, why wasn't your first thought "Ewwww, slimy.
I will throw this out right now!"?

Also, some items of clothing of my DH's give me the rage (looking at you, paint-stained already-deeply-unflattering-when-new-but-now-baggy joggers).

Bin it. Burn it. Buy a new one! Please.

category12 · 25/10/2019 13:26

Presumably it wasn't slimy or after being washed wasn't slimy. Hmm

OP would scarcely be going round in it saying it's comfy if it was slimy, wriggling with worms or scorching her skin with creosote, would she? I'm surprised it's not horribly mildewed, but eh.

I can't decide which side on this thread is oddest Grin.

sparklefarts · 25/10/2019 13:26

By lord that's a lot of darked on.

I half salute your level of laziness, OP, and half want to vom at the idea of the sheer amount of bugs and rain and possible animal piss that went into your beloved shirt.

GreenLeafTurnip · 25/10/2019 13:27

Keep it and keep wearing it. I have a new baby and all clothes worn at home have holes or stains or both! Nice clothes are for outside the house.

IWorkAtTheCheescakeFactory · 25/10/2019 13:28

I’m fine for wearing old clothes as long as they’re “clean”. I mean clean by they’ve been through the machine regularly but I don’t mind old stains, paint etc.

But I can’t get over leaving it on the deck all winter! Grin was it not all green and slimy?

NoSquirrels · 25/10/2019 13:29

Presumably it wasn't slimy or after being washed wasn't slimy. hmm

Well clearly after being washed it wouldn't be.

But I cannot imagine it wasn't in any way slimy at all when OP picked it up after months and months sitting on damp decking.

That's the point I would have lost any affection for the t-shirt - and any desire to wash it!

Bluerussian · 25/10/2019 13:29

Wear it with pride!
I do the same.

Horehound · 25/10/2019 13:32

Pic or it didn't happen

Pukkatea · 25/10/2019 13:32

Do you not have...other clothes?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/10/2019 13:34

pigsknickers

“darked on” is a reference to the scandalous behaviour of leaving your washing on the line overnight. It gets subjected to darkness and spider’s rub their willies on it -

I still leave mine out because I am a crazy rebel

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/10/2019 13:35

spiders - ignore the rogue apostrophe

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 25/10/2019 13:37

This is all well and good OP, but how often do you wash you towels?

RogersVideo · 25/10/2019 13:39

Eh.

When we bought our house there was a decrepit shed in the garden, and one of the things inside was an old basket full of towels. I washed the towels and we've been using them for 4 years now.

I left a cushioned chair in the garden over winter after my cat peed on it. By the spring it smelled fine again so I brought it back inside.

I (or rather DH and the kids) have left numerous articles of clothing in the garden for weeks at a time. Hell sometimes it takes a week for me to bother brining the laundry in off the line if it's been raining.

I think people are way too precious about this shit.

adaline · 25/10/2019 13:39

Oh, it's you again.

The one with the hard avocado and the posh nachos.

Are you and your boyfriend getting on now?

FrogsAreMean · 25/10/2019 13:42

"This is one of those threads you hope is a troll - if it isn't, throw the top away."

Definitely made up tosh in my opinion

Whattodoabout · 25/10/2019 13:44

A little surprised you left a T-shirt you love outside for months because you ‘couldn’t be arsed’ picking it up?!

I’d replace it, it sounds fucked.

PickAChew · 25/10/2019 13:47

I have some clothing that dates from the last century but the state of that t-shirt sounds pretty revolting.

meditereb · 25/10/2019 13:53

i don't understand why there is a pride in being that lazy ! only on mums net

and @RogersVideo all those things seem disgusting to me sorry!

Fink · 25/10/2019 13:57

I've still got clothes I had when I was in Year 10 and 11 and school. I'm pushing 40 now.

No way would I wear an item of clothing that had been out on the decking for half a year.

If it's just the wastefulness you don't like, cut it up and use it for other stuff. At a push, I might keep it as a work shirt for doing DIY etc., but it wouldn't be worn straight against the skin.

RogersVideo · 25/10/2019 14:00

@meditereb They were all things that after a wash, all still looked and smelled fine. What is disgusting about that? In a world where we are so needlessly wasteful, I'm not going to throw things out because of a "notion" of disgust, when the actual item is fine.

AnnaNimmity · 25/10/2019 14:00

wear it if it makes you feel good! It's irrelevant how old it is or holey

Personally I don't wear horrible scuzzy clothing because it makes me feel horrible and scuzzy. (I'm a sucker for nice loungewear - why sit around in horrible joggers?). But I have some cashmere that the moths have attacked, and will wear that because it feels lovely.

Ellie56 · 25/10/2019 14:01

I don't understand if it is such a favourite T shirt you could bear to leave it outside all winter. Did you not feel the urge to wear it long before now? Confused
