Brexit postponed

AIBU to worry that the (almost certain) delay in Brexit will give rise to civil unrest?

OP posts:
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 19/10/2019 22:49

If Brexit was stopped there would be a few riots but that isn’t going to happen

We are leaving a month ago we wouldn’t have thought we could be this closenon a vote but we are

Might have another delay which doesn’t help the cause for remain many people are just utterly fed up with it all and just want to move on

There could be another election great news for Boris bad news for ardent remainers

SoreThroatToday · 19/10/2019 22:50

.....and another thread where posters continue to bash leave voters and/or imply they don't understand things as well as the remainers, and/or are ignorant, and/or were gullible and sold a lie, and/or have changed their minds now they have been educated about the truth (by the superior remain voters), and/or are all racist anyway, and/or were clearly wrong on how they voted, and/or need to be shown that the sensible way to vote would have been to vote remain.

AthollPlace · 19/10/2019 22:50

I'm a remainer and committed to a confirmatory referendum
If they don’t honour the first vote then what’s the point of having a second?

Babynamechangerr · 19/10/2019 22:52

#bobptd

'bored of Brexit, pass the deal' is what is trending on twitter. Even with a lot of vocal remainers.

Even Remainer newspaper The Times is backing passing the deal.

Enough's enough. Our country is broken by the uncertainty and the polarisation of one half of the country against the other, not by Brexit itself.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 19/10/2019 22:54

Well there are more people living in the south east and there is also more wealth so of course the leave vote will be higher in numbers of affluent voters

The problem for labour is about the high number of leave votes in labour safe seats - many in the midlands and in the north - their supposedly grass roots (not really grass roots of Corbyn Labour) labour need these seats to win an election

I absolutely agree. I know a few who are passionately holding out for a second referendum - what a mistake that will be leave will win in higher numbers

There is quite a change in the last week or so people are weary and tired of the uncertainty and want to get to grips with what Brexit will bring

Figmentofmyimagination · 19/10/2019 22:59

Yes.

bumbleymummy · 19/10/2019 22:59

@SoreThroatToday Why don’t you explain why you voted for leave and what it was that you actually wanted. As people have pointed out, we’ve had several different versions of ‘what the people voted for’ so which version is the one that you actually wanted?

Antigonads · 19/10/2019 23:04

Oh bless you all.

Livelovebehappy · 19/10/2019 23:21

We will definitely be leaving, whether now or in 6 months time. We just have a few people who are in their last desperate throes of trying to stop it happening. While they think there is a hope that there may be a second referendum, people will try to sabotage any idea of leaving - many Remainers probably don’t even know the details of the proposed deal.

Figmentofmyimagination · 20/10/2019 08:00

I really don’t get what is such a big deal about having time for parliamentary scrutiny, an economic impact assessment and a referendum on the terms of this deal. If people like it, they can vote for it and it will secure the sense of democratic legitimacy that it is so clearly lacking at the moment. If as the pp suggests, people don’t understand all the terms that have been agreed and their economic impact, that is hardly surprising given that it was only agreed late last Thursday. I hope Tusk grants an extension conditional on a referendum. Perhaps the pp can explain to us all precisely what is so great about this agreement since he or she is so knowledgeable. Some of us are fed up with crass lazy sloganeering. What a shower.

Figmentofmyimagination · 20/10/2019 08:06

I’m with marina Hyde on this.

TequilaPilates · 20/10/2019 08:08

It just reinforces my belief that there should be an intelligence test before people are allowed to vote.

Oh of course. Where would you set the bar?

Maybe it could be as it was in the past - only land owners or only men allowed to vote because clearly no one else deserves a say do they?

By the way, I'd be careful what you wish for only making comments like that it's likely you wouldn't pass the intelligence test.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 20/10/2019 08:12

Even if brexit happens tomorrow it doesn't end. There will be years of trade negotiations. So if people are fed up and just want it done they are going to be bitterly disappointed

PinkPonyPalace · 20/10/2019 08:18

There will be civil unrest either way. Because neither government or parliament have addressed (or even tried to), the deep divisions in our society that lay behind the vote.
Agree with the ghost of FrankGrimes that this will go in for years before the full relationship is agreed. I do wonder who brexiteers will blame then when nothing is really resolved for possibly a decade.
It’s a shitshow either way. David Cameron and his party political posturing that led us to this has a hell of a lot to answer for, whatever side of the debate you’re on.

BertrandRussell · 20/10/2019 08:21

I think “Let’s get Brexit done” is ou w of the most misleading political slogans ever. But also one of the most effective. EspeciLly when followed, as it always was, by “so we can get on with improving our hospitals and schools and tackling crime”. As if somehow there will be time to do anything but negotiate trade deals and prepare legislation to replace the EU “red tape”.....

madeyemoodysmum · 20/10/2019 08:22

I believe all remainers are in for a shock when the inevitable election comes.

Tories and brexit will get the majority.
Brexiteers can’t speak up for comments such as this thread highlight. They are a silent majority waiting for the chance to vote labour and Libs
Mumsnet isn’t representative of real life.

madeyemoodysmum · 20/10/2019 08:24

waiting for the chance to vote labour and Libs out. Blush

Bluntness100 · 20/10/2019 08:26

I think we will know very shortly, likely by Monday night, if a deal is agreed. If it is then any extension will be technical and no civil unrest.

If it's not, then yes there could be issues, but spot issues. I would not foresee widespread or general unrest.

Pumperthepumper · 20/10/2019 08:28

And another post by a leaver who can’t offer anything coherent to the argument other than ‘why should I tell you what the benefits to Brexit are?’

I’d love to be persuaded that Brexit is a good thing, now’s your chance.

BertrandRussell · 20/10/2019 08:28

“ I believe all remainers are in for a shock when the inevitable election comes.“

I won’t. I know the Tories are going to win.

lljkk · 20/10/2019 08:30

So the angry people win.
Don't like the situation? Throw a riot. That'll show them. Then you get your way.

Am pretty sure that's how some people want the world to be run.

I understand that trade negotiations involves govt only, no parliament input, so will not be as obviously in the public eye, even though the consequences of No-FTA conditions will be obvious. Maybe after a while under no-FTA conditions we'll get riots from the same people who rioted in 2012... & 2019 under Farage's calling. Coz you know, any excuse for a riot.

BertrandRussell · 20/10/2019 08:30

Yes. How will Brexit make people’s lives better?

It’s interesting that even the most prominent Leave spokesman have stopped talking about the sunlit uplands and have taken on the “just let’s get on with it”narrative.

DippyAvocado · 20/10/2019 08:33

'bored of Brexit, pass the deal' is what is trending on twitter

Good grief. What a wonderful reason to pass an unscrutinised deal which will affect the long-term future of all citizens of this country for years to come, because some people on twitter are bored.

What's a better way of doing it? Via the ballot box? Oh, wait...
