Brexit postponed

AIBU to worry that the (almost certain) delay in Brexit will give rise to civil unrest?

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 20/10/2019 13:01

Fucking hell I’ve heard it all now! So post-Brexit we all have to live 8 adults to one house to save money and then we’ll be able to afford to live?

Errr I’ll stay in the EU and have my own property, mortgage and not live in poverty cheers.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/10/2019 13:02

I am sure some leavers have changed their mind

I know a number of remainers who just want to move on now and have accepted there will not be another referendum/revoke - we were duped into believing this would happen and stop is leaving it was never going to happen

MustardScreams · 20/10/2019 13:04

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed the ‘wanting to move on’ is a bit pointless though. And I think this is what people struggle to comprehend. Once we leave the EU, that is the very beginning. We’ve got decades of shite to come yet. Leavers just cannot grasp that fact though.

LittleGreenRobot · 20/10/2019 13:04

I, personally, want the country to come together. If someone changed their mind I wouldn't ostracise them for having voted leave in the first place, I would think 'well done' for changing your mind.

Rousette - and if some of those that voted to remain changed their minds now they've looked into a little more, considered the vote of the people should be implemented, then I too wouldn't ostracise them for changing their minds (why you think anyone would be ostracised for changing their mind is a bit weird imo), and if there are any patronising leavers out there (I doubt there's as many as there are patronising remainers) then they too may say 'well done' for changing your mind.

Faffette · 20/10/2019 13:07

"The only truewisdomis inknowing you knownothing"

And this is why I think leavers are not that clever. They think they know. Most people don't have a clue about Europe, how it works, how it affects us. It's really complicated stuff. As a remainer, I know that I don't know. And so I chose status quo.

Leavers who say they know what they voted for are clearly deluded.

mummmy2017 · 20/10/2019 13:07

Shall I tell you a secret.
Leavers are just waiting.
We don't need to go on the streets and march, because the revokers who are pushing through new laws , are actually going to be why we get a no deal.
Parliament can force letters to be sent and do other things, but all this does is show the EU there is no deal to be had .
Maybe this time they will just say enough go .

Roussette · 20/10/2019 13:08

I didn't say that I would ostracise them for changing their mind.

I said I would not ostracise them for voting leave in the first place. i.e. I would not be saying 'so what you've changed your mind, you and all the other leavers caused all this in the first place'.

Call me what names you want.

Pumperthepumper · 20/10/2019 13:11

Maybe this time they will just say enough go

@mummmy2017 and then what? How much better off will we be if they say ‘enough, go’? What benefits will we see?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/10/2019 13:13

Us remainers who really believed in a second referendum (personally I didn’t have always felt the result would be the same and now leave would have a larger majority) and the revoke argument (somethitn I did support at first far too late now) have been duped too

It was never going to happen if it was all remainer would ah e pulled themselves together but party politics aside and actually down something with with substance - I can name a handful who have

Once Article 50 was trigged that was it.

We have been duped too not just leavers because we are led by not just facts but what we feel is right for ourselves and our own situations- remain how things are didn’t appeal to as many unsurprisingly

The outcome of the referendum was promised to us all and that is what will happen

I wouldn’t be so smug if you yourself have believed there would be a referendum or that article 50 would be revoked

derxa · 20/10/2019 13:14

I know a number of remainers who just want to move on now and have accepted there will not be another referendum/revoke - we were duped into believing this would happen and stop is leaving it was never going to happen I would grab another referendum with both hands. Or a leave deal. Something which looks like a decision one way or another. This limbo is killing business.

BertrandRussell · 20/10/2019 13:17

I’d like to see what “moving on” means. I’d love to move on, but surely we’re going to be caught up in the quagmire of trade talks and legislation to replace EU regulations for the foreseeable?

mummmy2017 · 20/10/2019 13:18

People are now seeing it as the EU is a Hotel California, they say you can check out, but you can never leave.
How is that legal.?
The UK people know they are being stabbed in the back by Parliament, Boris has become the people's PM. People will vote for him, as a protest against the Remain MP's.

Roussette · 20/10/2019 13:18

Yes it'll be a decade of negotiations.

Pumperthepumper · 20/10/2019 13:20

@mummmy2017 but you didn’t answer my question. What happens if they say ‘enough, go’ - what happens to Britain? How much better off will we be? How will Britain be improved?

mummmy2017 · 20/10/2019 13:22

Why is it constantly ignored that the UK have the 5th largest economy.
Countries will want a deal , they want to trade with us. We are not some small dot of nothingness.

mummmy2017 · 20/10/2019 13:23

Pumperthepumper . We just don't know, but this is totally different to saying we will fail.

timshelthechoice · 20/10/2019 13:24

Oh, yes, the good ol' days when grafting was grafting! We lived 8 to a room but we were happy! Hmm

There won't be civil unrest because everyone will be too busy trying to scrape by, exactly as planned.

MustardScreams · 20/10/2019 13:26

@mummmy2017 which countries? The ones in the EU? Because they can get whatever we’re selling without tariffs elsewhere.

timshelthechoice · 20/10/2019 13:27

We are not some small dot of nothingness.

Name one thing, just one, that we have to offer that any country in the world needs but cannot get somewhere else and probably for cheaper?

derxa · 20/10/2019 13:27

I’d love to move on, but surely we’re going to be caught up in the quagmire of trade talks and legislation to replace EU regulations for the foreseeable? I get all that. Passing the WA is the start of a long process. A 2nd ref with a decisive vote for Remain might work but a narrow vote for Remain wouldn't. The genie is out of the bottle. It's all shit.

Roussette · 20/10/2019 13:27

Experts say we will fall to 7th biggest economy. And we are pretty much a small dot of nothingness when we leave.

The EU was this fantastic trading arrangement bringing together small and medium sized economies which enabled us to go toe-to-toe against the likes of China and US who can demand what they want because of their size and trading power. The EU was large enough to stand up to them. Without the EU we have little bargaining power and it's going to hurt us dreadfully

Pumperthepumper · 20/10/2019 13:28

@mummmy2017 again, how will Britain be improved? What benefits will we see if they tell us ‘enough, go’?

Also, it’s not true that EU is hotel California - the problem is we’ve been joined to them for so long that untangling ourselves is a complicated process, and there is absolutely no solution that pleases everyone. And we unfortunately have a government who decided to trigger article 50 without a plan, then run any deal as close to deadline as possible - even though, remember, there is no solution that meets the promises doled out in 2016. Add in that pesky international peace treaty for NI too and it’s a huge mess. The problem isn’t leaving - it’s leaving in a way that we’re better off. And that is an impossibility.

But you still haven’t answered my question so maybe you know something I don’t. How will we be better off if there are no more extensions and we’re told ‘enough, go’?

Roussette · 20/10/2019 13:29

I can't believe anyone would think that other countries would be tripping over themselves to do business with us. Why would they?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 20/10/2019 13:30

Why is it constantly ignored that the UK have the 5th largest economy.

I don’t think we do anymore do we? And part of the reason for us having had the 5th biggest economy is because we’re part of the EU.

Al the countries dying to do a trade deal with us seem to be pretty hesitant at the moment. Very few of them seem to be rushing forward to get the deals signed.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 20/10/2019 13:30

You might well grab at another referendum
Many wouldn’t and there had been a shift as we saw yesterday in MPs voting

Labour took three years to put forward this proposal

LD the same with the revoke policy

Tories are comfortably ahead in the polls

It’s not happening
