To think that Scottish Independence is now inevitable and who can blame them, so good luck Scotland!

That’s it really. Unfortunately, I think this Brexit deal will probably go through tomorrow. But even if there was a referendum, people will probably vote for whatever deal going because everyone is demented with Brexit fatigue. And even if we did remain following another referendum, there would be so much backlash and unpleasantness from certain elements of the far right it doesn’t bear thinking about.

It’s extemely depressing. I’m in a Remain London Borough. Never really met a Brexiteer, but what can you do?

I can’t imagine how livid the Scottish people must feel though. Their referendum was fairly marginal, but I think if they’d seen this coming the Scottish independence vote would have won through.

Anyway, NS is definitely gearing up for another Scottish referendum and who could blame her? At least Scotland have the option of getting out of this nightmare. I’m sure they’ll be independent within a year or so and good for them. I wish them all the best.

AIBU to think the legacy of Brexit will be Scottish Independence and the end of the UK as we know it?

BJ mentioned NI 13 times in his speech, Scotland was not mentioned once

Yes the EU don’t care about the Scottish border at all do they? 🤔

Miaowing · 19/10/2019 10:24

The UK does care about Scotland but in reality it is 10 percent of the UK population .

It gets 20 percent of the care as a result.

Miaowing · 19/10/2019 10:24

That should have been 10 percent.

"PS Anyone who wants to move here will be made most welcome" Really? I'm part Scottish but with an English accent. Recently visited relatives in Scotland and did not feel welcome in shops etc.

Meggie2008 · 19/10/2019 10:30

Echoing the above, it'll also be a cold day in hell before I vote for the SNP and independence.

They make a big song and dance about how the majority of the country voted to remain in the EU, therefore we have to listen to them.
The majority of the country also voted to remain in the UK, so piss off with your second referendum. You can't just re-do votes because it's not the result they wanted. Are we going to keep having one every couple of years until they finally get a yes?
So much for once in a generation.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 19/10/2019 10:34

"How would you define who gets to live in an independent state of London?"

Usually nationality is based on birth or naturalisation. Beyond that it would be be up to Scotland (or London) to establish its immigration policy. If it were an EU member state then free movement would be a big part of it.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 19/10/2019 10:36

The majority of the country also voted to remain in the UK, so piss off with your second referendum.

I don't have any direct interest either way, but I can see that the UK leaving the EU and the union beginning to unravel are two massive reasons justifying another referendum, even so soon after the first.

yellowallpaper · 19/10/2019 11:21

I think if the Scots want independence they should be given another referendum in a couple of years, once Brexit is done with one way or another and economies are on a more even keel. Only then will the Scots and the rest of the UK have a clearer economic model with which to deal with the EU. Scotland will want to rejoin the EU and it will need a sound economy to do this.

If the Scottish economy is genuinely self supporting then it's in everyone's best interest if they are independent.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 19/10/2019 15:06

@ny20005 how big is Ireland? I thought Scotland only had about 5m people? Does it actually have a source of wealth though? How much is the oil worth? The whisky/tourism don’t really measure up to rivals. I doubt there’d be much money in that. Is the renewable energy exported or something? I know that Britain has the services industry but I though that Scotland missed out on the benefits due to being a separate jurisdiction. Although the nice parts of Edinburgh seem well off the be fair but all the other places I’ve been look very poor although I suppose appearances can be deceiving.

iggi999 · 19/10/2019 15:17

Whisky is about 5 bn a year and tourism 11 bn.

MangoSalsa · 19/10/2019 15:21

Lot of financial services and insurance in Edinburgh @Velveteenfruitbowl

Iggi999 · 19/10/2019 15:34

Yes I remember fear of being left stuck in a non-EU Scotland was a reason a number of businesses said they would relocate from Edinburgh if independence happened. One wonders how they like the current situation.

Evilspiritgin · 19/10/2019 15:39

Ewm has already moved to south of the border

Aquilla · 19/10/2019 15:48

Massive chortle to anyone suggesting renewable energy is an 'asset' to Scotland! Massively subsidised.

Deicide · 19/10/2019 16:59

Waiting for the anti-scottish comments to cone flooding in

Calyx72 · 19/10/2019 17:08

Oh yessss bring on Scottish Independence!

We can vote in someone other than the SNP after the fact Fatshedra Hmm

I would prefer us to re-enter the EU but would vote yes even if that wasn't going to happen. I have always thought Scotland would do better if it was able to manage itself for itself.

I know a few people who are going to vote yes this time after being a no voter last time. I also have family and friends who would still vote no. I can't understand it but it's their right.

Cannot WAIT for the yes vote.

Calyx72 · 19/10/2019 17:08

Renewable energy is a massive asset to Scotland.

OtraCosaMariposa · 19/10/2019 17:10

I'm Scottish and think independence is idiocy.

Yes, me too.

ForalltheSaints · 19/10/2019 17:11

I don't think it is inevitable as the two main parties in Westminster will do everything to stop a referendum.

Calyx72 · 19/10/2019 17:34

Forallthesaints If the Westminster government stops Scotland having a referendum then it's not really an equal union.

If Scotland wants a referendum it should be able to have one. We did before - then there was a 'material change in circumstances eg Brexit' which was actually named in the legalities prior to the indyref as being a valid and proper reason for indyref2.

Indecisiveragazza · 19/10/2019 20:44

I'm Scottish. Independence would be catastrophic for Scotland. I understand the fervour for independence of many Scots. However, our economy wouldn't support independence. Oil prices are so much less than the Scottish government projected, now a US tax on our other big exports.
I voted against independence and to remain in the EU. It seems mad to split from the rest of the UK............ our biggest market for Scottish goods. We could be out of the UK AND out of Europe. I doubt the EU would admit Scotland as an independent nation.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 19/10/2019 23:02

Didn’t realise that @MangoSalsa. I was looking at grad jobs fairly recently and they all seemed to be in London/midlands. I just assumed that people wanted their banks in the same place as their lawyers.

Velveteenfruitbowl · 19/10/2019 23:06

@Iggi999 that’s like £3k per capita. Not a typo.

Iggi999 · 19/10/2019 23:14

Yes tourism is just about 5% of gdp

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 19/10/2019 23:17

I was a tentative yes in 2014.

In 2020 I will be a thunderous, booming YES.

Difficult or not, Scotland can't afford to be shackled to England any longer. I'll take a hard border and the Euro. We're not stuck with the SNP, we can vote for whatever government we like. We can vote for the things we want to have and not be outvoted by the numbers in England.

I don't understand Scots who want to remain in the UK.
